    eng: The study is concerned with why rape victims in a given society are treated as they are, and, more specifically, with rape in classical antiquity from Homer to the 3"r"d century A.D. It tries to explain why raped women were treated not as victims but rather as a source of embarrassment to their husbands, fathers and families. Probing examples from the texts of some fifty-odd authors, an attempt is made to show the mostly disastrous effects of rape on the fate of the victims. Losing their virginity or sleeping with a man not their husband, women lost their sexual purity, a quality which accounted for their enhanced status. Raped virgins could not hope for a husband anymore, married victims faced threats and accusations. Fathers, husbands and families tried in every possible way to get rid of raped women who could not any longer be trusted with the foremost task of the ancient family, reproduction (chapters 1-3). Tales of rape in myth had to follow certain patterns and thus show some peculiarities, but on the whole they support the conclusions drawn from other texts (chapter 4). Though in the course of time more account was taken of women in general, the treatment of raped women did not change much. The importance of keeping their daughters and women pure for their reproductive function within the family was that guided fathers, husbands and others in their attitudes towards raped women even in Imperial Rome.
