The essays in this volume analyze strategies adopted by contemporary novelists, playwrights, screenwriters, and biographers interested in bringing the stories of early modern women to modern audiences. It also pays attention to the historical women creators themselves, who, be they saints or midwives, visual artists or poets and playwrights, stand out for their roles as active practitioners of their own arts and for their accomplishments as creators. Whether they delivered infants or governed as monarchs, or produced embroideries, letters, paintings or poems, their visions, the authors argue, have endured across the centuries. As the title of the volume suggests, the essays gathered here participate in a wider conversation about the relation between biography, historical fiction, and the growing field of biofiction (that is, contemporary fictionalizations of historical figures), and explore the complicated interconnections between celebrating early modern women and perpetuating popular stereotypes about them

This work analyzes 21st-century realistic speculations of human extinction: fictions that imagine future worlds without interventions of as-yet uninvented technology, interplanetary travel, or other science fiction elements that provide hope for rescue or long-term survival. Climate change fiction as a genre of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic writing usually resists facing the potentiality of human species extinction, following instead traditional generic conventions that imagine primitivist communities of human survivors with the means of escaping the consequences of global climate change. Yet amidst the ongoing sixth great extinction, works that problematize survival, provide no opportunities for social rebirth, and speculate humanity's final end may address the problem of how to reject the impulse of human exceptionalism that pervades climate change discourse and post-apocalyptic fiction. Rather than following the preferences of the genre, the ecocollapse fictions examined here manifest apocalypse where the means for a happy ending no longer exists. In these texts, diminished ecosystems, specters of cannibalism, and disintegrations of difference and othering render human self-identity as radically malleable within their confrontations with the stark materiality of all life. This book is the first in-depth exploration of contemporary fictions that imagine the imbrication of human and nonhuman within global species extinctions. It closely interrogates novels from authors like Peter Heller, Cormac McCarthy and Yann Martel that reject the impulse of human exceptionalism to demonstrate what it might be like to go extinct

    Notes:

Art in the 21st century has both continued on and changed in ways that were unanticipated. There had emerged forms of advanced media technologies with antecedents in cinema and broadcasting that began to take pre-eminence. These new digital and telematic media opened up issues of production, reception and audience participation in radical, unexpected ways. In January, 2019, the Osage Art Foundation brought together a small group of international scholars and artists for a day-long forum to discuss the significance of digital media. What resulted was the decision to call for a broad collection of short essays that would reflect on the impact of advanced media in the arts and humanities today. This slim volume “Art in the 21st century: Reflections and Provocations” is that result, which focuses on the influence of new image technologies, including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), in the arts. The 15 contributing authors, representing various fields of expertise, from art history and art criticism to literature, music, animation, photography, film, philosophy and media archaeology, introduce the history and interpretation of the subject with a view to their own particular field of expertise. Rather than attempt a survey of the topic, this publication aims to present some reflections and provocations on salient concerns about art in the 21st century to stimulate discussions on art after the media have become superfluous and systemic for our advanced civilisations

Failure as a pervasive occurrence in life has rarely been investigated by sociology, even though the collapse of plans, unattainability of goals and breakdown of vital relationships are ordinary experiences. The study of early-21st-century fiction reveals that imaginative literature at present explores the lacunae of failure, disillusionment and collapse as central narrative themes. About fifty years after Samuel Beckett, in whose works the failing of expression became a major concern, postmillennial narratives expose disruption or defeat as subject matter and literary trope. Unheroic failure as a motif makes its variegated appearance in diverse areas of human life such as love, religion, art, and social community. The narratives explore it as the individual s participation in common humanity.

Inhaltsverzeichnis: African Americans and medicine – slave narratives and semiotics – Obamacare – Media sensationalism – Native American literature, photo literature – immigrant identities – Post 9/11 – Taiwanese American Literature – Chicano cinema – Chinese American masculinity – Japanese American literature – The New Woman and Eastern European feminism – Camp and Sadcore. Klappentext: The contributions in this collection underline the vibrancy as well as complexity that characterizes the study of American literature and culture in the twenty-first century with regard to the exploration and understanding of ethnicity and gender. The book aims at contributing to the research already taking place within American Studies, while opening up the texts discussed to further literary and cultural evaluations and interpretations. America is viewed here not in isolation but as part of a fluctuating as well as geographically and culturally expansive reality as testified by the Asian, European, and American background of the volume contributors.
