    Die Ruderalvegetation - eine Pflanzenwelt, die sich in vom Menschen tiefgreifend veränderten, devastierten oder brach liegenden Räumen einstellt - hat in der Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts Konjunktur. Auch in Erzählungen über den (post-)sozialistischen Raum wird das Unkraut als ein Motiv des Magischen Realismus prominent inszeniert. Auf Schutt und Abraum, in zerstörten Fabrikarealen und leer geräumten Landschaften siedeln sich Ruderalvegetation und Literatur gleichermaßen an. Am Beispiel einschlägiger Texte von Erwin Strittmatter bis Andrzej Stasiuk zeigt Julia Kubin die Reaktion der Literatur auf die Veränderungen seit 1945 und entwirft dabei Grundzüge einer Poetik der Ruderalität.

    Over the last half century, sub-Saharan Africa has not had one history, but many - histories that have intertwined, converged and diverged. They have involved a continuing saga of decolonization and state-building, conflict, economic problems, but also progress. This new view of those histories looks in particular at the relationship between territorial, economic, political and societal structures and human agency in the complex and sometimes confusing development of an independent Africa. The story starts well before the granting of independence to Ghana in 1957, with an introductory chapter about pre-colonial societies, slavery and colonial occupation. But the thrust of the book looks at Africa in the closing decades of the old millennium and the beginning of the new millennium. While this book examines post-colonial conflicts within and between new states, it also considers the history of the peoples of Africa - their struggle for economic development in the context of harsh local environments and the economic straitjacket into which they were strapped by colonial rule is charted in detail.0The importance of imposed or inherited structures, whether the global capitalist system, of which Africa is a subordinate part, or the artificial and often inappropriate state borders and political systems set up by colonial powers will be examined in the light of the exercise of agency by African peoples, political movements and leaders

    Le livre-rétrospective de 50 ans de voyages du photographe dans l'empire du Milieu.0Chines retrace, sur plus de cinquante ans, les nombreux séjours que fit le photographe Marc Riboud dans l'empire du Milieu. Dès son premier voyage en 1957, les avertissements n'ont pas manqué: "Vous ne verrez que ce que les Chinois voudront bien vous montrer, [.] un décor préparé à l'avance." Il est vrai qu'un Européen ne se déplace pas en Chine comme il le ferait ailleurs, surtout dans ces années-là. Mais à force d'insistance polie, de patience, de diplomatie, le photographe a obtenu de pénétrer dans les habitations, les écoles, les musées, de déambuler de jour comme de nuit à Pékin ou à Shanghai, d'assister au spectacle qu'offrent les campagnes ou les usines. Les images incroyables livrées ici témoignent du quotidien des Chinois avant que n'ait lieu le "Grand Bond en avant" instauré par Mao Zedong en 1958. S'ensuivirent d'autres séjours sur plusieurs décennies jusqu'en 2010 et avec eux, bien entendu, d'innombrables photographies, témoins aujourd'hui des promesses de l'Histoire. À travers plus de 350 clichés en noir et blanc et en couleurs, Marc Riboud dresse un portrait passionnant, car vivant, de ces Chine(s) multiples.
