    Der jüdische Schriftsteller und aggressiv-polemische Publizist Saul Ascher (1767-1822) fing nach den napoleonischen Befreiungskriegen das Befinden einer Generation von deutschen Intellektuellen mit einem Reizwort ein. "Die höchsten Interessen der menschlichen Natur, Religion, Vaterland, Recht, erwarben in dem Gemüth der deutschen Denker nunmehr ein eigenes Gepräge, das sich durch eine Gemüthsäusserung aussprach, die man füglich 'Germanomanie' benennen könnte." Gemeint waren die Überlegungen eines Ernst Moritz Arndt, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, Friedrich Schlegel, Friedrich W.J. Schelling, Adam Müller und Ludwig Tieck, um die Verschiedenheit der Religion, der Verfassungen und Fürstentümer in einem deutschnationalen Geist zu einigen. Aschers trennscharfe, aber polemisch übersteigerte Analyse der sogenannten 'Germanomanen', die er an anderer Stelle als "transzendentale Idealisten und Identitäts-Philosophen" identifizierte, erschien zu einem Zeitpunkt, als auch die Neue Welt von einer Welle der germanophilen Begeisterung erfasst wurde. Der wichtigste und am meisten rezipierte Autor der amerikanischen "Germanomanie" war Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832).
