    An extreme sensitivity to gathering social crisis, an accompanying angry enthusiasm for artistic experimentation and renewal – this compelling mix in German art, poetry, and drama of the period 1910 to 1925 continues to draw both scholarly attention and intense popular interest. In this book Augustinus Dierick focuses on another significant but hitherto neglected medium of German Expressionist thought – short narrative prose – in order to illuminate and evaluate the contribution of that genre to one of the twentieth century's most powerful artistic movements. Dierick's study includes a thorough analysis of the works of a broad range of Expressionist prose writers, from those of such specialists in the genre as Edschmid, Heym, Benn, Loerke, Frank, Sternheim, Ehrenstein, and 'Mynona' to the shorter prose works of such major figures as Alfred Döblin, Heinrich Mann, Max Brod, and Franz Werfel. Dierick isolates the thematic obsessions common among Expressionist writers: the pathos of the self in confrontation with nature and with God, the tension between self and the institutions of bourgeois society, and the attractions and dangers of eroticism. Throughout Dierick stresses the interrelationship between themes and their formal expression. He examines many apparent excesses in style and tone, many aberrations in structure and generic characteristics, and identifies them not as needless experimentation but as a necessary result of the attempt to find appropriate forms for extreme situations and complex ideas. Dierick's analysis makes clear that Expressionist prose has an intrinsic artistic value and, because of certain nuances and different accents, must be included in any estimation of the nature and importance of Expressionism as a whole.

    The study presents a thorough investigation of Kafka's aphoristic writings, examining them in terms of the history of the aphorism in Germany, and paying special regard to Kafka's contemporary Austrian aphorists. Emphasis is placed on the role of the aphorism in the development of Kafka's literary creativity. Aphoristic discourse presented itself to Kafka as a possible manner of resolving specific conflicts in his life and art, above all the crisis of communication the individuality of the self. Aphoristic structure provides the transitional link between Kafka´s early perspectivistic narratives and the parables of the later period.

    Little research interest has been directed so far toward the way in which interviews represent a specific form of documentary literature. The study looks at a large, but entirely assimilable collection of texts qualifying as interview literature, stemming from autobiographical accounts by 'ordinary' East German citizens and reflecting life in the GDR and in post-GDR East Germany up to 1995. Its purpose is to demonstrate that the interview genre is a source of personal testimony which, like diaries or letters, can be of major and immediate value for many branches of scholarship

Der vorliegende Sammelband dokumentiert die Ergebnisse einer von der Thyssen Stiftung geförderten Tagung, die sich über Fallstudien, konstellative Beschreibungen und Entwicklungsskizzen einer historisch-systematischen Erschließung dieses Textfeldes nähert. Die hier abgedruckten Beiträge untersuchen nicht nur einzelne Genres, und zwar sowohl prominente als auch begrifflich unerschlossene. Sie thematisieren auch die mediengeschichtlichen Voraussetzungen und texttheoretischen Implikationen Kleiner Prosa. So liefern sie in Umrissen eine Theorie des gesamten Textfeldes im Literatursystem der Moderne. Whether as aphorisms or fragments, thought figures or feuilletons, prose poems, micro-stories or autobiographical jottings, different manifestations of short prose have greatly influenced the development and differentiation of recent literature in German and prove to be especially significant for the evolution of literary modernism. The present collection of articles documents the findings of a conference funded by the Thyssen Foundation. Its aim was to initialize a historical and systematic exploration of this textual field via case studies, constellation descriptions, and development outlines. The articles in this volume are not restricted to the examination of individual genres, be they firmly established or as yet largely unexplored. They also thematize the media-historical preconditions for the emergence of short prose and its text-theoretical implications. As such they supply the basis for a theory of the entire textual field within the literary system of modernism.

    Im Prozeß ihrer fortschreitenden Literaturfähigkeit traten deutsche Schriftstellerinnen seit dem ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert auch auf dem Gebiet der Reisebeschreibung hervor. Unterstützt wurde dies von der Öffnung des Genres für empfindsame oder subjektive Darstellungen. Da Reisen, Schreiben und Publizieren gleichwohl in vieler Hinsicht dem Weiblichkeitsstereotyp widersprach, entwickelte sich für weibliche Reiseschriften ein eigener, geschlechtsspezifischer Regelkodex, der sich neben den Merkmalen der Gattung behauptete, ja diese sogar überlagern konnte. Die Spuren dieses Regelsystems lassen sich in den zeitgenössischen Beurteilungen ebenso sichern wie in den Reisewerken selbst. Nach 1850 führte die geschlechtsbedingte stilistische und inhaltliche Beschränkung zum Trivialitätsverdikt und ließ die ehemals beliebten Schriften in Vergessenheit geraten. Die vorliegende Arbeit etabliert zunächst eine Typologie der Gattung Reisebeschreibung. Im Vergleich mit männlichen Reiseschriftstellern und ausländischen Autorinnen werden dann die sozialgeschichtlichen Reisemöglichkeiten für Frauen, die Produktionsbedingungen, Marktchancen und werkinternen Regelsysteme für weibliche Reiseschriftstellerei in Deutschland untersucht. Fundament der Analyse ist eine um Vollständigkeit bemühte bibliographische Erfassung der weitgehend unbekannten deutsch- und anderssprachigen Werke. Ein bio-bibliographischer Anhang dient der Information über die deutschen Autorinnen The late 18th century saw the emergence of German women writers in the field of travel writing. Underlying their efforts was a gender-specific code of rules that restricted them both stylistically and in terms of subject-matter. The study inquires into the external and internal conditions imposed on travel and travel writing as undertaken by German women writers and points up the very considerable differences between those obtaining for their male counterparts and also for women writers from other countries.
