    For women, according to the contemporary Austrian dramatist Elfriede Jelinek, writing for the theater is an act of transgression. The idea that drama as a grand public genre resists women writers has become established in recent scholarship. But Jelinek herself has won the Büchner Prize, the most prestigious award in German letters, and there is a wealth of dramatic work by women from the 20th century and before: both facts seem to contradict the notion of women's exclusion from drama. So why has drama by women appear to have been written against the odds, and why has it, until very recently, been missing from literary histories? This book looks in detail at women's playwriting in German between 1860 and 1945, and at its reception by critics. Many of the works considered have never before been analyzed by modern scholarship; others, notably the plays of Marieluise Fleisser and Else Lasker-Schüler, are well known, but are read here for the first time in the context of earlier dramatic work by women. Sarah Colvin seeks modes of reading that do justice both to the dramatic texts as 'performance' texts, and to the sense of 'otherness' experienced by the woman writer in a male-dominated literary and theatrical environment. She concludes that an understanding of the techniques developed by women playwrights of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries can enrich our reading not only of Fleisser and Lasker, but of contemporary dramatists such as Jelinek. If all the world's a stage, playwrights can theoretically be seen as in control of the world they create; this book asks to what extent women dramatists manage to use the space of the drama to reflect the world that 'they' experience. Ausgehend von Ethiken der Begegnung mit dem Anderen und von instabilen Ökonomien erweist sich dabei das Prekäre als ästhetische und ethische Kategorie.     The last two decades of the 20th century gave rise to a renaissance in the genre of the political drama in Germany. Although political drama has always been a mainstay of German literature, it has been of particular significance during the years surrounding the 'Wende', or reunification, of 1989. This book is the first comprehensive study of politically engaged German drama writing in the 1980s and 1990s, covering the works of key playwrights during the period and providing an analysis of oppositional theater before and after reunification. It treats the range of current political topics and their repercussions in drama writing, including reunification, women's issues, the media, politicized environmentalism and the Greens, and right-wing radicalism. In addition to established playwrights such as Heinar Kipphardt, Franz Xaver Kroetz, and Heiner Müller, the book looks at the younger generation of playwrights: writers such as Oliver Bukowski, Dea Loher, Marius von Mayenburg, Albert Ostermaier, and Theresia Walser. It gives an overview of recent German political drama through analysis of more than forty contemporary plays, clearly tracing connections between politics and theater. Each chapter is preceded by a short introduction into the respective political topic, providing the framework for the study of drama as a political tool and making it easy for students to see the multiple ways in which plays respond to political change. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in drama and theater studies and German literature. Birgit Haas teaches in the German Department at the University of Heidelberg

    Die vorliegende Studie widmet sich einem Genre, das von der literatur- und theaterwissenschaftlichen Forschung ungeachtet seiner Popularität bislang kaum fokussiert worden ist, dem Künstlerdrama. Ziel der Arbeit ist die Entwicklung einer systematischen Typologie aus feldtheoretischer Perspektive. Dabei werden ausgewählte Theatertexte u.a. von Gerhart Hauptmann, Bertolt Brecht, Wolfgang Bauer, Thomas Bernhard und Falk Richter theoriegeleitet und werkbezogen analysiert. Gefragt wird nach den kunst- und künstlerspezifischen Problemstellungen, den Kunstauffassungen der jeweiligen Autoren, die sich in den jeweiligen Dramen auf thematischer und literarästhetischer Ebene manifestieren sowie nach den Positionierungsstrategien der Dramatiker, können ihre Bühnenstücke doch als distinktive Stellungnahmen im kulturellen Feld gelesen werden. Neben den exemplarischen Einzelanalysen bietet die Studie einen historischen Überblick über die Genese der Gattung und die zentralen Motive des Künstlerdramas im 20. Jahrhundert

    Die vorliegende Arbeit entwirft eine Geschichte des deutschsprachigen Künstlerdramas. Leitfaden der Darstellung ist die dramen- und theatergeschichtlich relevante Figur des "Künstlers auf der Bühne". Berücksichtigt werden historische und fiktive Künstler. Die Untersuchung umfasst den Zeitraum von der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts bis zur Gegenwart. Behandelt werden Werke von Christian Felix Weiße, Goethe, Tieck, Oehlenschläger, Grillparzer, Immermann, Halm, Holtei, Laube, Hebbel, Richard Wagner, Hofmannsthal, Hauptmann, Sorge, Jahnn, Dürrenmatt, Weiss, Jandl, Thomas Bernhard u.a. Ein kurzer Ausblick exponiert postmoderne Entwicklungen. Literaturgeschichtlich gesehen dominieren im 19. Jahrhundert die pathetischen und finalen Darbietungen, während im 20. Jahrhundert, neben einer singulären politischen Linie, die das Drama der Zeit überhaupt charakterisierende Form der Tragikomödie in den Vordergrund tritt. Darüber hinaus werden mediale Transformationen des Künstlers im Drama bzw. auf der Bühne bemerkbar. Die Arbeit enthält eine Chronologie, eine Bibliographie sowie ein Namen- und Werkregister und ermöglicht so auch den punktuellen Zugang zu interessierenden Einzelthemen This study drafts a history of German dramas dealing with artists. The thread running through the study is that of the 'artist on the stage' which is relevant for the history both of the drama and the theatre. Account is taken of both historic and fictitious artists. The study encompasses the period from the second half of the 18th century up to the present. Works examined include texts by Goethe, Tieck, Grillparzer, Immermann, Laube, Hebbel, Hofmannsthal, Hauptmann, Dürrenmatt, Weiss, Jandl, Bernhard et al
