The two texts of Suśruta on which the five distinguished Ceylon scholars referred to by Sir Henry Blake have rested their opinion that the medical writers of ancient India were acquainted with the connection existing between malaria and mosquitoes, were also quoted in my previous communication to this Journal (July, 1905), which was written about the same time as Sir H. Blake's paper.

Among many other curious bits of information supplied by Itsing (673-695 A.D. in India) with regard to the condition of medical science in India, in his time, there occurs the remarkable statement that lately a man epitomized the eight arts of which medical science consists, and made them into one bundle, so that all physicians in the five parts of India now practise according to this book.

Now a flood of light has been thrown on the political condition of India, in the very time when Megasthenes visited it, by the recent recovery of the Kautilya Arthasastra. The readers of this Periodical have enjoyed the advantage of being the first to get a sight of the learned R. Shamasastry's translation of that ancient sanskrit text. So it is needless to point out to them the many interesting details it contains. Thus e.g., all the numerous officials and functionaries in one of the petty States of ancient India are named and their functions defined, and described.

B. gesagt wird "The Nāgārjunas and the Patañjalis of India had the merit of anticipating Paracelsus and bis followers by several centuries."
