    This book illustrates the link that unites memory, thought, and narration, and explores how the act of telling helps people to understand themselves and others. The structure of the book is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the aspect of narrative comprehension—the person as narrator. It identifies two different origins of narrative comprehension (memory and play) and argues that the narratives we produce starting from autobiographical memory are intended to give order and meaning to events that happened in the past, in order to be able to interpret the present. Conversely, the narratives we produce starting from play are aesthetically constructed, not forced to respect reality, and because of this create potential new worlds of understanding. The second part of this book is devoted to the study of narrative understanding as an understanding of the other. Chapters examine the different points of view a listener can adopt in order to interpret the text produced by a narrator and how these points of view can interact with each other. The book concludes with a consideration of narrative comprehension in the digital world, and examines the principal effects of stories and narrative on the notion of self in the realm of the “Internet galaxy.” Telling to Understand will be of interest to researchers and students in cognitive science, psychology, literary studies, philosophy, education, and educational technology, as well as any reader interested in enlarging their concept of narrative and how narrating modifies the self

    Poststrukturalistische sowie postmoderne Sprachphilosophie hat vielleicht die Zeit, da sie in aller Munde war, schon wieder hinter sich. Gleichwohl verankert sich gegenwärtig unter ihrem Einfluss ein Konsens darüber, dass sprachliche Zeichengefüge nicht eine ihnen vorgängige Wirklichkeit abbilden, sondern dass das, was als wahr und wirklich bezeichnet wird, ein Ergebnis sprachlicher Kommunikation darstellt. In unserer Disziplin ist dies eine Einsicht, die sich seit etwa eineinhalb Jahrzehnten insbesondere der Soziale Konstruktionismus (Gergen 1985) und die Kulturpsychologie (Bruner 1986, 1990) zu eigen gemacht haben. Sie treffen sich im Konzept eines narrativen Konstruktionismus (Gergen & Gergen 1988). Dessen zentrale These lautet: Wir stellen uns selbst und unsere Welt her, indem wir Geschichten ("narratives") erzählen, wiedererzählen und umerzählen. Ein Einwand scheint auf der Hand zu liegen: Wie kommen wir dazu, wenn uns nicht (außersprachliche) Wirklichkeit dazu anhält? Lautete die Gretchenfrage zu Beginn der entzauberten Moderne "Sag Heinrich, wie hältst Du es mit der Religion?", mag sie heute den – in einem anderen Sinne wieder verzaubernden - PostmodernistInnen so gestellt werden: "Wie hältst Du es mit der Realität?" Des Fundamentalismus dieser, auf allen argumentativen Ebenen in verschiedenster Ausformung anzutreffenden Standardfrage überdrüssig, möchte ich hier nicht eine weitere Abhandlung über die prinzipielle Differenz zwischen der Metaphysik des Realismus und den Konstruktivismen anbieten (dazu kurz und in aller Klarheit: Westmeyer 1996), sondern Überlegungen anhand einer Eigenart vieler Erzählungen anstellen: der Uneindeutigkeit ihrer textuellen Verweisungen. Dies ist für uns PsychologInnen deshalb relevant, weil m. E. viele psychologische Erzählungen wie Erinnerungen, Selbstbeschreibungen, Begründungsmuster, erst recht Phantasien und Träume sich durch Uneindeutigkeit auszeichnen, ja heutige "postmoderne" Identitäten nach übereinstimmender Meinung der FachautorInnen geradezu uneindeutig sein ...

    "In diesem Beitrag geben wir einen Überblick über einige Forschungsarbeiten, die sich mit morphosyntaktischen oder diskursiven Kompetenzen von Grundschulkindern mit Deutsch als Zweitsprache beschäftigen. Dabei liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf dem Vergleich der Erkenntnisse, die mit verschiedenen Methoden gewonnen werden können. Wir zeigen, dass stark kontrollierte Methoden, wie zum Beispiel die Messung von Blickbewegungen, vorhandenes Wissen nachweisen können, das in der Sprachproduktion manchmal schwer feststellbar ist. Außerdem können diese Methoden dazu beitragen, auch subtile Unterschiede zwischen L1- und L2-Kindern aufzudecken oder in der Produktion kaum nachweisbare Entwicklungsstadien zu dokumentieren." We focus on a comparison between findings obtained with different research methods. We show that strictly controlled methods, such as the measurement of eye-movements, open a window into the children's developing knowledge that could hardly be detected with language production data alone. In addition, these methods provide us with insights into subtle differences between L1 and L2 children and into developmental stages that are difficult to document in production data." Die simultan-bilingualen Kinder zeigten ein eigenes Erwerbsprofil. Keine Unterschiede zu monolingualen Kindern bestanden in Phänomenen, die im monolingualen Erwerb früh gemeistert werden, während sich für spät erworbene Phänomene Parallelen zu frühen Zweitsprachlernern zeigten. Bei Verwendung nicht erwerbstypengerechter Normen in der Sprachdiagnostik besteht daher ein hohes Risiko für Fehldiagnosen." The results indicate a unique profile for simultaneous bilinguals. No differences to monolinguals were found for phenomena acquired early in monolingual acquisition of German. Parallels to early second language learners were observed for phenomena acquired late by monolinguals.
