    Mit dem Aufstieg der Umweltbewegung wurde "Ökologie" vom Namen einer biologischen Disziplin zum gesellschaftspolitischen Schlagwort. Entgegen der heute vorherrschenden Wahrnehmung vollzog sich diese semantische Umbesetzung zunächst nicht etwa in Europa, sondern in den USA: die Umweltbewegung nahm dort bereits im Laufe der 1960er Jahre den Charakter einer modernen Massenbewegung an - einige Jahre, bevor das Thema in Europa größere Wellen zu schlagen begann. Diese Arbeit skizziert zunächst die kulturgeschichtlichen Wurzeln der amerikanischen Umweltbewegung und den zeitgenössischen Kontext, innerhalb dessen sie binnen weniger Jahre zu einer maßgeblichen politischen Kraft werden konnte. Die Tendenz, in der natürlichen Landschaft den Ausdruck eines transzendenten Ordnungswillens erkennen zu wollen, wird über den neuenglischen Transzendentalismus zu ihren Ursprüngen in der Physikotheologie und im puritanischen Providentialismus verfolgt. Der Umbruch von der Naturschutzbewegung ("conservation movement"), die seit ihren Erfolgen zu Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in eine politische Randposition gedrängt worden war, zur modernen Umweltbewegung ("environmentalism"), wird im Anschluß an Jean-François Lyotard als Reaktion auf den Zusammenbruch jener progressivistischen "großen Erzählung" gedeutet, gemäß derer wissenschaftlicher Fortschritt, staatliche und wirtschaftliche Ordnung sich wechselseitig legitimieren. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden Texte von vier Autoren analysiert, die besonders nachhaltigen Einfluß auf die Entwicklung der amerikanischen Umweltbewegung gehabt haben: Aldo Leopolds A Sand County Almanach, Rachel Carsons Silent Spring, die Essays von Gary Snyder sowie Desert Solitaire von Edward Abbey. Begriffe wie natürliches Gleichgewicht, Nahrungskette und Superorganismus, die der naturwissenschaftlichen Ökologie entstammen, werden in diesen Texten zu absoluten Metaphern im Sinne Hans Blumenbergs: sie dienen nicht mehr als bloße Kurzformeln für wissenschaftliche Hypthesen und mathematisch formalisierbare Sachverhalte, ...
