"For Perse these lines are brief, but they are as fine as anything he has done." With these words The Times Literary Supplement greeted the publication in France of the last four poems written by the Nobel Prize winner before his death in 1975. This volume provides their French texts with an English translation by Richard Howard, completing the publication in Bollingen Series of the collected poetry of St.-John Perse. Originally published in 1977.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. In the later Middle Ages, many writers claimed that prose is superior to verse as a vehicle of knowledge because it presents the truth in an unvarnished form, without the distortions of meter and rhyme. Beginning in the thirteenth century, works of verse narrative from the early Middle Ages were recast in prose, as if prose had become the literary norm. Instead of dying out, however, verse took on new vitality. In France verse texts were produced, in both French and Occitan, with the explicit intention of transmitting encyclopedic, political, philosophical, moral, historical, and other forms of knowledge. In Knowing Poetry, Adrian Armstrong and Sarah Kay explore why and how verse continued to be used to transmit and shape knowledge in France. They cover the period between Jean de Meun's Roman de la rose (c. 1270) and the major work of Jean Bouchet, the last of the grands rhétoriqueurs (c. 1530). The authors find that the advent of prose led to a new relationship between poetry and knowledge in which poetry serves as a medium for serious reflection and self-reflection on subjectivity, embodiment, and time. They propose that three major works-the Roman de la rose, the Ovide moralisé, and Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy-form a single influential matrix linking poetry and intellectual inquiry, metaphysical insights, and eroticized knowledge. The trio of thought-world-contingency, poetically represented by Philosophy, Nature, and Fortune, grounds poetic exploration of reality, poetry, and community.

The love sonnets of Louise Labé of Lyons and the gilded legend of her life in the early years of the French Renaissance have appealed to the imagination of four centuries.Printed here beside the text of the 1556 edition, the translations of the sonnets by Alta Lind Cook follow closely the original version and admirably retain its sweep and movement, its simplicity and melody. The rhyme scheme of the Petrarchan sonnet has been preserved with variations and corresponding to those of the French. With the poems, the translator presents a sketch of the circumstances and background of this unique literary figure of the Sixteenth Century, known in France and outside of France as La Belle Cordière.These translations by Alta Lind Cook are fine poetry; in English as in French the reader finds ";present reality in their hope and their despair, their independence and their impertinence, their tears and their sparkle.

In The Material, the Real, and the Fractured Self, Susan Harrow explores the fascinating interrelation of subjectivity, materiality, and representation in the poetry and related texts of four modern French writers: Arthur Rimbaud, Guillaume Apollinaire, Francis Ponge, and Jacques Réda. She demonstrates the richness and the relevance of modern French poetry for today's readers, putting contemporary thought to work on the fractured self emerging in the post-Baudelairian lyric.Harrow addresses the widely perceived marginalization of poetry in the writing/theory debate, demonstrating that the emergence of a self at once shaped by and straining against material, historical, subjective, and cultural impediments reveals fertile relations between theory and poetry. Where purer forms of postmodernist thinking have stressed the dissolution and dispersal of the human subject, new approaches informed by cultural studies, autobiography theory, and gender studies work to recover fictions of experience and retrieve submerged narratives of the self. Probing the activity of textual self-recovery among the debris of history and fantasy, visuality and desire, and culture and corporeality, The Material, the Real, and the Fractured Self imparts something of the startling beauty and the raw urgency of poetry writing across the broad modern period.

The traits that characterize the “language” of French Symbolism are the center of these essays. In interpreting major or previously neglected compositions by Mallarmé, Verlaine, Rimbaud, Claudel, Valéry, and Apollinaire, the author shows how each of these poets worked with the elements that distinguish this influential group of writers as a whole.Originally published in 1969.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

In this book the motet lyrics of Philipthe Chancellor (ca. 1165-1236) are subjected to critical editing, translation and comment. While the lyrics treated in the first part can certainly or in all probability be credited to Philip, the second part is devoted to poems in which the assignation is disputed. The commentary is followed by an interpretation that analyses the interplay of music and lyrics combined with arguments regarding the authenticity of the respective lyrics. In doing so, both the religious Latin lyrics with which we are no longer familiar, as well as the motet as a musical-lyri Barbara Schetter

The making of a reasonably comprehensive anthology which is intended to do more than reflect the personal literary tastes of the anthologists is not an easy task, but is certainly an exciting and challenging one. It is important, of course, if it is to have coherence and validity, that its audience be reasonably well defined and kept in mind as the selection proceeds. The anthology offered by Professor Graham has been prepared carefully to meet the needs of students reading French poetry while in the early years of their university course. It does not attempt to be a bulky sample of the whole field of French poetry but rather to be a judicious selection of the works of poets who may be described as typical of the best in their age. From each of them have been included some well-known selections which students must always meet and also some less well known which are nevertheless equal in quality and whose relative unfamiliarity may give them a special appeal to instructors. A particularly interesting and valuable feature of the anthology is that the editor has in a good many cases chosen poems on similar themes from different authors, and students will thus be able to compare styles of different centuries and different poets as applied to certain specific subjects. (For example, the selection includes Deschamps' "Balade" on "Renart et le Corbaut" and La Fontaine's "Le Corbeau et le Renard'; Lamartine's and also Leconte de Lisle's "Le Lac.")

In this anthology an effort has been made to include representative selections from the most significant sixteenth-century French poets. With the exception if a few longer works (mainly those of Ronsard, Du Bartas, and D'Aubigné), poems are given complete. In addition, the original spelling and punctuation have been retained as far as possible, except for the usual editorial modifications (differentiation of u and v, i and j, the addition of accents à, où, replacement of & by et, and so on). The sixteenth century is a period of tremendous poetic activity. It is a period closer in spirit to us in many ways than the intervening centuries, particularly the seventeenth and the eighteenth. Its poetry is still being rediscovered and re-assessed in a way that is just as exciting as the period of foment during which it was written.

With reference to Celan’s renderings of French poetry, the author discusses the poetics underlying Paul Celan’s translations and the changes it underwent in the course of time. The study concentrates not only on the well-known translations of Rimbaud's »Bateau ivre« (1958) and Valéry’s »Jeune Parque« (1960) but also pays close attention to the hitherto neglected translations of Benjamin Péret (1950), Guillaume Apollinaire (1951–1959), Jules Supervielle (1958–1968), and André du Bouchet (1968). Up to about 1960 Celan employed largely the same stylistic resources in his translations as in his own poetry. In the 1960s, however, we find a parting of the ways. The translations emancipate themselves from Celan’s personal poetic diction, becoming more ›literal‹ and ›faithful‹. This change in translation procedure is interpreted here as a consequence of an immanent contradiction in Celan’s poetics of dialogue. Review text: "[...] Pennone's study brings much new material to the analysis of Celan's translations, openig up fresh paths of inquiry in a thourough and eloquent study."Charlotte Ryland in: Austrian Studies 16/2008

This book starts by asking why a group of doctors produced an edition of Belleau in 1945. It then traces the motifs of sickness and healing in the poet’s work, ranging more widely than critics have hitherto done, and considering La Reconnue and the Dictamen alongside the better-known texts. It suggests that the supposedly frivolous Belleau is a poet-doctor aiming to cure the reader of melancholy and to come to the aid of a war-torn France.

Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377) was the master poet of fourteenth-century France. He established models for much of the vernacular poetry written by subsequent generations, and he was instrumental in institutionalizing the lay reader. In particular, his longest and most important work, the Voir dit, calls attention to the coexistence of public and private reading practices through its intensely hybrid form: sixty-three poems and ten songs invite an oral performance, while forty-six private prose letters as well as elaborate illustration and references to it's own materiality promote a physical encounter with the book.In Controlling Readers, Deborah McGrady uses Machaut's corpus as a case study to explore the impact of lay literacy on the culture of late-medieval Europe. Arguing that Machaut and his bookmakers were responding to contemporary debates surrounding literacy, McGrady first accounts for the formal invention of the lay reader in medieval art and literature, then analyses Machaut and his bookmakers' innovative use of both narrative and bibliographical devices to try to control the responses of his readers and promote intimate and sensual reading practices in place of the more common public performances of court culture. McGrady's erudite and exhaustive study is key to understanding Machaut, his works, and his influence on the history of reading in the fourteenth century and beyond.

"A collection of serial poems, Think of Lampedusa addresses the 2013 shipwreck that killed 366 Africans attempting to migrate secretly to Lampedusa, an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea. The crossing from North Africa to this island and other Mediterranean way stations has become the most dangerous migrant route in the world. Interested in what is producing such epic displacement, Josue Guebo's poems combineelements of history and mythology. Guebo considers the Mediterranean not only as a literal space but also as a space of expectation, anxiety, hope, and anguish for migrants. Hemeditates onthe long history of narratives and bodies trafficked across the Mediterranean Sea. What did it--and what does it--connect and separate? Whose sea is it? Ultimately he is searchingfor what motivates a person to become part of what he calls a "seasonal suicide epidemic." This translation of Guebo's Songe à Lampedusa, winner of the Tchicaya U Tam'si Prize for African Poetry, is a searing work from a major African poet."--

The Berne song book originates from the last third of the 13th century and is often considered marginal because of the Lorraine dialect and the corrupted delivery. Here it is analysed in depth for the first time. It includes a linguistic and material analysis of the manuscript followed by a new edition of 53 anonymous poems. Each poem is presented as a diplomatic transcription with critical editorial commentary. A synoptic index allows the reader to place the manuscript within the wider context of the written tradition of older northern French poetry

Brent Hayes Edwards, author of The Practice of Diaspora:With restless, relentless 'attention to the letter,' Carrie Noland demonstrates that the poetic innovations of Césaire and Damas were first of all major modernist interventions, deeply engaged with the textual sphere of experimental print culture in the interwar period. These virtuosic, revisionary readings are an exhilarating model of what it means to do Diasporic literary criticism today. Nick Nesbitt, Princeton University:Carrie Noland's Voices of Negritude in Modernist Print is a landmark work, inaugurating a decisive and crucial advance in our understanding of the poets of Negritude. Noland argues compellingly for a text-centered interpretive practice, one that attends to the determinations of the print medium understood as an aesthetic regime independent of the author's scribal utterance, and the struggle to construct what she terms, following Adorno, an 'aesthetic subjectivity' immanent to the text itself. This path-breaking and original work gathers together the various studies of Negritude poetry of the preceding decades to make an informed, compelling, and necessary intervention into the heart of francophone studies. J. Michael Dash, New York University:Carrie Noland offers a timely warning about the tendency to treat literature as a whole as an adjunct to sociopolitical reality. Voices of Negritude in Modernist Print boldly explores the tensions between formally experimental verse and the prevailing identity politics of postcolonial theory Carrie Noland approaches Negritude as an experimental, text-based poetic movement developed by diasporic authors of African descent through the means of modernist print culture. Engaging primarily the works of Aimé Césaire and Léon-Gontran Damas, Noland shows how the demands of print culture alter the personal voice of each author, transforming an empirical subjectivity into a hybrid, textual entity that she names, after Theodor Adorno, an "aesthetic subjectivity." This aesthetic subjectivity, transmitted by the words on the page, must be actualized--performed, reiterated, and created anew--by each reader, at each occasion of reading. Lyric writing and lyric reading therefore attenuate the link between author and phenomenalized voice. Yet the Negritude poem insists upon its connection to lived experience even as it emphasizes its printed form. Ironically, a purely formalist reading would have to ignore the ways formal--and not merely thematic--elements point toward the poem's own conditions of emergence. Blending archival research on the historical context of Negritude with theories of the lyric "voice," Noland argues that Negritude poems present a challenge to both form-based (deconstructive) theories and identity-based theories of poetic representation. Through close readings, she reveals that the racialization of the author places pressure on a lyric regime of interpretation, obliging us to reconceptualize the relation of author to text in poetries of the first person
