    The article highlights the importance of studying the economic dimension of biblical texts for their understanding and, especially, hermeneutic updating of the message conveyed by the texts, in the face of the challenges presented by Pope Francis in the face of an economy that generates death. To achieve this goal, the article differentiates economics from chrematistics and the briefly approaches four texts of the Old Testament as examples. It concludes by presenting some guidelines that can contribute to the bible-economy relationship, based on the experiences of Latin American peasants. O artigo sublinha a importância de estudar a dimensão econômica dos textos bíblicos para sua compreensão e, especialmente, atualização hermenêutica da mensagem transmitida pelos textos, face aos desafios apresentados pelo Papa Francisco diante de uma economia que gera morte. Para alcançar esse objetivo, o artigo diferencia economia de crematística e, depois, aborda de maneira sucinta e como exemplos, quatro textos do Primeiro Testamento. Conclui apresentando algumas pautas que podem contribuir na relação Bíblia-economia, a partir das experiências dos camponeses e das camponesas latino-americanas.

    Lorenzo Ricci SJ (1703-1775) und Jan Roothaan (1785-1853) leiteten den Jesuiten-Orden in schwierigen Zeiten äußerer wie innerer Bedrängnis. 1987 ließ Jorge Mario Bergoglio SJ acht Briefe dieser zwei Generaloberen aus dem Lateinischen übersetzen. Im Vorwort verwies er auf ihre Verwurzelung in der Spiritualität des heiligen Ignatius von Loyola. Wiederholt ist er auch als Papst auf diese Briefe zu sprechen gekommen, weil er in ihnen „eine Fundgrube von Kriterien der Unterscheidung“ entdeckt hat, die „Kriterien des Handelns bieten, geeignet, sich nicht von der institutionellen Trostlosigkeit absorbieren zu lassen“. Diesen Briefen sind fünf Briefe von Papst Franziskus aus dem Jahr 2018, die sich mit dem Thema Missbrauch in Chile und weltweit befassen, beigestellt. So ist diese Briefsammlung ist ein aufschlussreiches Dokument dafür, wie Papst Franziskus mit Trostlosigkeit heute umgeht. Die ignatianische Spiritualität ist ein Schlüssel, um den ersten lateinamerikanischen Bischof von Rom zu verstehen: sein Denken und sein Handeln.

    The notion of moral fairness of application of capital punishment is stretched between two poles of opposite interpretative meanings. On the one hand, there is an imperative related to maintaining the social order and good that justifies in some specific cases killing an individual for the good of the community; on the other hand, there is the message of the Gospel about holiness of each human life. In this regard, at the attempt to investigate the fairness of death penalty, a certain hermeneutic tension related to the overlapping of rights and obligations both with regard to the criminal and society that needs to be protected against him or her. The starting point of this article is an outlook on death penalty with due regard of a ‘hermeneutic charge’ contained both in the duty to protect common good and each individual’s life. Next, the ‘genuine paradox’ was analysed that emerges in a situation where the right to live and the right to protect overlap. All the considerations are concluded with a question whether the recent abolitionist interpretation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church should be classified as the continuity hermeneutic or rather the discontinuity hermeneutic.

    Es kommt wieder vermehrt zu Tragödien durch das Kentern von Flüchtlingsbooten. Mindestens 1.500 Menschen starben so 2021 allein im Mittelmeer. Angesichts dieser bestürzenden Realität sprach der Papst in seiner Ansprache, wie schon fünf Jahre zuvor, von einem "Schiffbruch der Zivilisation". Das Mittelmeer als Wiege verschiedener Zivilisationen dürfe sich nicht in einen "Spiegel des Todes", das "Mare Nostrum" dürfe sich nicht in ein "trostloses Mare Mortuum" verwandeln. Die Verwendung von Seefahrtmetaphern hat in der Geschichte des europäischen Denkens Tradition und mag daher nicht besonders originell erscheinen. Im Zusammenhang mit den im Mittelmeer und im Ärmelkanal ertrinkenden Menschen entfaltet sie dennoch große Wirkung. Dem physischen Untergang der Flüchtlingsboote durch unterlassene Hilfeleistung wird der moralisch-zivilisatorische Untergang Europas, ja, der ganzen Menschheit an die Seite gestellt - denn wie der Papst betont, ist Migration nicht nur ein regionales, sondern ein globales Thema. Aufgrund ihrer Prägnanz wurde deshalb wohl auch genau diese Metapher aus der Rede des Papstes weltweit in die Titel der Zeitungsberichte gehievt. Aber was soll durch die Verwendung der Schiffbruchmetapher ausgedrückt werden? Welche Funktion erfüllt sie? Und was ist überhaupt mit Zivilisation gemeint?
