Ein Buch, das uns die gesellschaftliche Verantwortung der Medien als Sprachrohr für kulturelle Vielfalt und Meinungspluralität vor Augen führt. Massenmedien als virtueller Ort des öffentlichen Diskurses schaffen eine Realität, die meinungsbildend ist. Nachrichten sind lebenswichtige Informationen, die helfen, Zusammenhänge zu verstehen. Leider ist gerade die Berichterstattung über fremde Kulturen nicht frei von Manipulationen. So werden manche Regionen fast immer als exotische Ferienparadiese dargestellt, während bestimmte Regionen in Afrika oder der Nahe Osten fast ausschließlich als Konfliktherde beschrieben werden. Das Publikum erfährt dabei oft nur sehr wenig über Hintergründe und Ursachen. Diese verkürzte Berichterstattung hat nicht bloß Auswirkungen auf den Wissensstand der Rezipienten, sie bestimmt auch den Umgang mit Flüchtlingen und Migranten im eigenen Land. Anders als in Großbritannien, den Niederlanden und Skandinavien ist man sich in Deutschland aber noch sehr wenig über die große Verantwortung der Medien für die Integration von kulturellen und religiösen Minderheiten bewusst. Im Zentrum des Bandes steht der Alltag der Berichterstattung in und aus Deutschland sowie über Projekte aus dem europäischen und außereuropäischen Ausland, die sich die Verbesserung der interkulturellen Kompetenz von Medienvertretern zum Ziel gesetzt haben. Das Handbuch, von Medienfachleuten geschrieben, bietet zahlreiche Anregungen und Hinweise für einen dialogischen Journalismus, der der Umsetzung des Prinzips >Dialog der Kulturen< verpflichtet ist
