Addressing academic and general readers, this volume provides interpretations of major Canadian novels in English published during the last twenty years. Comprising a wide range of topics and genres, including writing by recent immigrants and by First Nations authors as well as speculative fiction on global future(s), these novels testify to the richness, vitality and diversity of contemporary Anglo-Canadian writing. The twenty-five essays by established and emerging scholars in the field show how contemporary Canadian novels in English have reflected transformations in Canadian society since the turn of the millennia. In particular, they reappraise the cultural diversity which is central to an understanding of contemporary Canadian writing. The volume thus investigates the ongoing formation of a specifically Canadian form of multiculturalism and of Canadian cultural sensibilities as acted out in literature.

Recent changes in Canadian legislation have enabled First Nations to adopt property taxation and other forms of taxation on reserves, thereby allowing them to directly finance their local governments through local tax revenues. In this paper, we compile data on the passage of First Nations tax laws over a thirty year period from a centralized national database on First Nations by-laws, the First Nations Gazette. We combine these data with additional sources to analyze the factors that are associated with First Nations exercising their taxation authority. We find evidence of geographic policy diffusion consistent with First Nations learning from their neighbours and direct evidence that formal educational and institutional resources are important correlates of tax law adoption. Understanding this process informs the broader literature on the evolution of taxation structures and local political incentives, and may contain important lessons for Indigenous tax jurisdiction in other contexts. It is also a critical first step towards assessing the long-term consequences of First Nations' new fiscal powers.

There are 1.8 million Indigenous people in Canada, accounting for five percent of the total population. They speak more than seventy languages and represent many different cultures. With recent land claims and the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential schools, the situation of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis has gained critical attention. Teaching Indigenous Studies, however, is a difficult endeavor, as educators must be knowledgeable and sensitive about Indigenous histories, cultures, traditions, and political issues. Incorporating the latest research in anthropology, ethnography, history, literary and film studies, the chapters in this book focus on current matters such as traditional ways of life, land claims, and self-government, trace cultural changes that resulted from contacts with the Europeans, and discuss the process of reconciliation. Referring to Indigenous perspective in the analysis of cultures and the teaching of these issues, the authors have included many Indigenous voices and sources, and explore the institutions that provide Indigenous communities in Canada with national and international visibility.
