    The literature and art of the French Enlightenment is everywhere marked by an intense awareness of the moment. The parallel projects of living in, representing, and learning from the moment run through the Enlightenment's endeavors as tokens of an ambition and a heritage imposing its only and ultimately impossible cohesion. In this illuminating study, Thomas M. Kavanagh argues that Enlightenment culture and its tensions, contradictions, and achievements flow from a subversive attention to the present as present, freed from the weight of past and future.Examining a wide sweep of literary and artistic culture, Kavanagh argues against the traditional view of the Age of Reason as one of coherent, recognizable ideology expressed in a structured narrative form. In literature, he analyzes the moment at work in the inebriating lightness of Marivaux's repartee; the new-found freedom of Lahontan's and Rousseau's ideals of a consciousness limited to the present; Diderot's championing of Epicurean epistemology; Graffigny's portrayal of abrupt cultural displacement; and Casanova's penchant for chance's redefining moment. The moment in art theory and practice is explored in such forms as de Piles's defense of color; Du Bos's foregrounding of perception; Watteau's indulgence in a corporeal present; Chardin's dismantling of mimesis; and Boucher's and Fragonard's thematics of desire

    Französische Bildtapeten aus der Manufaktur von Joseph Dufour fanden seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert in Interieurs in ganz Europa als begehrtes Ausstattungsobjekt Verwendung - vor allem in bildungsbürgerlichen Haushalten. Katharina Eck stellt die drei großformatigen Tapeten zu »Amor und Psyche«, »Telemach auf der Insel der Calypso« und »Paul und Virginie« in den Fokus ihrer Analysen. In einer transdisziplinären Studie (Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaft) untersucht sie die Geschlechter- und Paarbildungsdidaktiken in den Tapetenszenen - wie auch das »in richtigen Bahnen verlaufende« Sexualitätsdispositiv - zusammen mit den Praktiken des Wohnens und der Geselligkeit um 1800. Sie entwickelt Analyseachsen, die das »In-Beziehung-Setzen« mit den tapezierten Räumen und deren performatives Potenzial erstmalig in dieser anschaulichen Form ausloten

Approaching this phenomenon from an interdisciplinary point of view, Sonja Longolius develops a concept of »performative authorship« by examining different strategies of becoming an author. In regard to the notion of her concept, this work offers a critical and comparative analysis of the works of Paul Auster, Candice Breitz, Sophie Calle, and Jonathan Safran Foer. Specifically, Auster/Calle and Breitz/Foer form a generational pair of opposites, enabling a discussion of postmodern and post-postmodern artistic strategies of »performative authorship«.

    The proliferation of digital technology has changed our visual perception and the way we interpret terms such as 'representation', 'immersion', and 'virtuality'.Kresimir Purgar examines some of the topics fundamental to an understanding of the contemporary culture of images. The principal thesis of this volume is that we are witnessing the transitional period of images as not-representation-anymore and not-yet-immersion. Instead of just asking what images mean, we should ask ourselves what images are, how they appear, and what they do to us. The author proposes the comprehensive concept of "pictorial appearing" that takes into account phenomenological, semiotic, and art-historical perspectives on both old and new images.

    Comix, comic shops, and the rise of alternative comics, post 1968 -- An art of tensions -- A broader canvas -- "I made that whole thing up!" -- Irony and self-reflexivity in autobiographical comics -- Whither the graphic novel?

    In the 1980s, a sea change occurred in comics. Fueled by Art Spiegelman and Franoise Mouly's avant-garde anthology Raw and the launch of the Love Rockets series by Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario Hernandez, the decade saw a deluge of comics that were more autobiographical, emotionally realistic, and experimental than anything seen before. These alternative comics were not the scatological satires of the 1960s underground, nor were they brightly colored newspaper strips or superhero comic books. In Alternative Comics: An Emerging Literature, Charles Hatfield establishes the parameters of alternative comics by closely examining long-form comics, in particular the graphic novel. He argues that these are fundamentally a literary form and offers an extensive critical study of them both as a literary genre and as a cultural phenomenon. Combining sharp-eyed readings and illustrations from particular texts with a larger understanding of the comics as an art form, this book discusses the development of specific genres, such as autobiography and history

    30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, we live in a time of globalization and free trade. Nevertheless, 70 new border walls have been built in this period - put together, they would cover the total circumference of the Earth. While governments offer manifold justifications for building these separation barriers, they invariably attract the attention of artists. Is it merely the lure of transgression, however, that attracts them - or is there a deeper significance in the artistic encounter with border walls? And which artistic strategies do these artists employ to approach them?In order to address these questions, Élisa Ganivet revisits the history of border wall aesthetics and compares more recent border-related works by 100 artists, including Joseph Beuys (Berlin), Banksy (Israel-Palestine), and Frida Kahlo (Mexico-US). Through art and thus beyond art, we understand the flaws and shortcomings of supposedly well-oiled systems.With a preface by Élisabeth Vallet.

Kunst ist kein Erkennen oder Erfahren, sondern strategisches Tun: Als (feierliches) ästhetisches Sorgen kultiviert sie in öffentlichen wie privaten Kontexten eine Praxis existenziellen kultischen Sorgens. Christian Zürner hinterfragt ästhetische Topoi wie Autonomie und (Zweck-)Freiheit angesichts solch immanenter Notwendigkeit ebenso wie normative philosophische Zuschreibungen. Kunst bedeutet keinen souveränen Überschuss, sondern lebt vom Drang, menschliche Existenz in einer unheimlichen Welt überhaupt erst einzurichten.

    Was ist »moderne Kunst«? Aus der Perspektive des taiwanischen Kunstdiskurses gestellt, macht diese Frage Diskrepanzen in der Erzählung der Kunstgeschichte der Moderne sichtbar, die von Europa aus weitestgehend unbeachtet bleiben. Anhand von taiwanischen kunstkritischen Texten seit den 1950er Jahren - die hier das erste Mal in deutscher Übersetzung vorgelegt werden - analysiert Lisa Bauer-Zhao das Verständnis von moderner Kunst, dessen Veränderung sowie die zugehörige Begriffsgeschichte in Taiwan. Im Kontext der Globalisierung der Kunstwelt beleuchtet sie die aufscheinenden Problemfelder und eröffnet eine globale Perspektive auf die Diskussion um moderne Kunst.

Kehrseite der digitalen Explosion, die Open Access erst möglich und auch notwendig gemacht hat, ist eine Inflation von Information und Wissen: das notorische Datenmeer. Speichern des Wissens, seine Vernetzung, vor allem aber Filtern, Fokussieren und Kuratieren heißen die daraus folgenden heutigen Herausforderungen. Gesucht sind hier neue Wegweiser und Kompasse. Wie weit Kunsthochschulen und die dort angesiedelte angewandte Forschung Ideen dazu beisteuern können, wird in diesem Band ausgelotet - mit interdisziplinär versammelten Beiträgen aus den Bereichen Bildungs- und Hochschulpolitik, angewandte Musik- und Interpretationsforschung, Digital Humanities und Big Data, Bildende Kunst und Kunstgeschichte, Ethnografie, Health Care und Social Design, Ästhetik und Grafik. They look at how movies, a popular culture medium, can as well be both a medium and type of folklore, playing cultural roles and conveying meanings customarily found in other folkloric forms.     Was passiert, wenn die Sprache der Wissenschaften auf die Sprache der performativen Künste trifft? Welche Formen der öffentlichen Inszenierung, Darstellung und Versammlung laden dazu ein, sich auf die Produktivität der Fremdheit im Umgang mit Themen und Situationen, mit Anderen und mit sich selbst einzulassen? Jörg Holkenbrink und das Theater der Versammlung gelten als Pioniere solcher Verhandlungspraxen und performativen Forschungen, die sie seit 1992 an der Universität Bremen und darüber hinaus in den unterschiedlichsten regionalen, überregionalen und internationalen Kontexten praktizieren.     In recent years, the term global art has become a catchphrase in contemporary art discourses. Going beyond additive notions of canon expansion, this volume encourages a differentiated inquiry into the complex aesthetic, cultural, historical, political, epistemological and socio-economic implications of both the term global art itself and the practices it subsumes. Focusing on diverse examples of art, curating, historiography and criticism, the contributions not only take into account (new) hegemonies and exclusions but also the shifting conditions of transcultural art production, circulation and reception.

    In looking at contemporary Iranian video art, this book examines artistic presentations of the self and the (de)construction of identity. Künstlerische Selbstinszenierungen in der zeitgenössischen iranischen Videokunst sind nicht zuletzt durch Identitätskonstruktionen im sowohl inner- als auch außeriranischen visuellen Diskurs geprägt. Im Zentrum dieses Buches stehen Arbeiten von Simin Keramati und Shahram Entekhabi, die in eine breit angelegte kunst- und kulturwissenschaftliche Analyse des Identitätsbegriffs in Iran des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts eingebettet sind.Julia Allerstorfers interdisziplinäre Studie berücksichtigt aktuelle Debatten um kulturelle Identität in migrativen und länderübergreifenden Kontexten und führt differenziert in performative und de/konstruktive Praxen der Selbstdarstellung in der iranischen Gegenwartskunst ein.

    Französische Bildtapeten aus der Manufaktur von Joseph Dufour fanden seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert in Interieurs in ganz Europa als begehrtes Ausstattungsobjekt Verwendung - vor allem in bildungsbürgerlichen Haushalten. Katharina Eck stellt die drei großformatigen Tapeten zu »Amor und Psyche«, »Telemach auf der Insel der Calypso« und »Paul und Virginie« in den Fokus ihrer Analysen. In einer transdisziplinären Studie (Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaft) untersucht sie die Geschlechter- und Paarbildungsdidaktiken in den Tapetenszenen - wie auch das »in richtigen Bahnen verlaufende« Sexualitätsdispositiv - zusammen mit den Praktiken des Wohnens und der Geselligkeit um 1800. Sie entwickelt Analyseachsen, die das »In-Beziehung-Setzen« mit den tapezierten Räumen und deren performatives Potenzial erstmalig in dieser anschaulichen Form ausloten.     Art texts of the 1960s evade all classic categories - for the first time they are read with a focus on their style characteristics, which are somewhere between that of a document and a narrative. Kaum ein Beitrag zur Minimal und Conceptual Art kommt ohne die Referenz zu den Texten ihrer Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus. Welchen Einfluss hat jedoch die Position des Verfassers oder der Verfasserin auf das Schreiben und die Lektüre? Ausgehend von Fragestellungen aus der Kunst- und Literaturtheorie zeigt Dorothee Wagner, dass Künstlerinnen und Künstler wie Ad Reinhardt, Robert Morris, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Joseph Kosuth, Dan Flavin, Dan Graham, Yvonne Rainer und Robert Smithson sich auf jeweils unterschiedliche Weise dem Schreiben und Veröffentlichen bedienten: Die Re-Lektüre dieser Texte erlaubt dabei einen Zugang zum Schreiben als künstlerische Strategie wie auch zu Künstlerschriften als Quelle und Material im Allgemeinen.
