    In war films, the portrayal of deep friendships between men is commonplace. Given the sexually anxious nature of the American imagination, such bonds are often interpreted as carrying a homoerotic subtext. In Armed Forces, Robert Eberwein argues that an expanded conception of masculinity and sexuality is necessary in order to understand more fully the intricacy of these intense and emotional human relationships.     »What can you do when you have to be a man?«, fragt Jim (James Dean) seinen Vater in »Rebel Without a Cause« (1955), dem wohl bekanntesten Jugendfilm der 50er Jahre. Diese Studie untersucht anhand von Hollywoodfilmen der Nachkriegszeit (1946-1960), welche Männlichkeitsdiskurse in den USA verhandelt wurden. Dabei tritt eine große und äußerst komplexe Vielfalt an Entwürfen hervor: vom versehrten Kriegsheimkehrer über den treusorgenden Ehemann und Vater bis hin zum jungen Rebellen oder vermuteten Homosexuellen. Durch die Verknüpfung der filmwissenschaftlichen Analyse mit dem New Historicism und den Gender Studies können die relevanten gesellschaftlichen Figurationen in unterschiedlichen Genres analysiert und an die zeitgenössischen Diskurse zurückgebunden werden. Spielfilme werden hier als historische Quellen ernst genommen und für eine kulturwissenschaftliche Analyse fruchtbar gemacht
