The note discovered beside Rosaleen Wright's hanged body is full of reasons justifying her suicide--but it lacks her trademark vitality and wit, and, most importantly, her signature. So the note alone is far from enough to convince her best friend Jane that Rosaleen was her own murderer, even if the police quickly accept the possibility as fact. Instead, Jane suspects Rosaleen's boss, New York theater impresario Luther Grandison. To the world at large, he's powerful and charismatic, but Rosaleen's letters to Jane described a duplicitous, greedy man who would no doubt kill to protect his secrets. If Rosaleen stumbled upon one such secret, it could have led to an untimely demise--and Jane risks a similar end when she takes a job with Grandison's company, tangling with one of Broadway's deadliest actors in a desperate play for the truth

A spine-chilling mystery and contemporary love story, Beneath the Mother Tree plays out in a unique and wild Australian setting, interweaving Indigenous history and Irish mythology. On a small island, something dark has disturbed the peace. Grappa believes it's the Far Darocha, a mythical creature whose mournful music lures you down to a black abyss. Ayla, his granddaughter, has other ideas, especially once she meets the mysterious flute player she heard on the beach. Riley and his mother Marlise move to the island to escape their grief. But when the community is beset by a series of strange dea

He's working at his family's restaurant, weathering his brother's blows, resenting his older sister's absence. And discovering he likes boys. Around him, others live and thrive and die in Houston's myriad neighborhoods: a young woman whose affair detonates across an apartment complex, a ragtag baseball team, a group of young hustlers, hurricane survivors, a local drug dealer who takes a Guatemalan teen under his wing, a reluctant chupacabra. Bryan Washington's brilliant, viscerally drawn world vibrates with energy, wit, and the infinite longing of people searching for home. "This critical edition delivers a unique and comprehensive collection of the works of Ktunaxa-Secwepemc writer and educator Vera Manuel, daughter of prominent Indigenous leaders Marceline Paul and George Manuel. A vibrant force in the burgeoning Indigenous theatre scene, Vera was at the forefront of residential school writing and did groundbreaking work as a dramatherapist and healer. Long before mainstream Canada understood and discussed the impact and devastating legacy of Canada's Indian residential schools, Vera Manuel wrote about it as part of her personal and community healing. She became a grassroots leader addressing the need to bring to light the stories of survivors, their journeys of healing, and the therapeutic value of writing and performing arts. A collaboration by four Indigenous writers and scholars steeped in values of Indigenous ethics and editing practices, the volume features Manuel's most famous play, "Strength of Indian Women"-first performed in 1992 and still one of the most important literary works to deal with the trauma of residential schools-along with an assemblage of plays, written between the late 1980s until Manuel's untimely passing in 2010, that were performed but never before published. The volume also includes three previously unpublished short stories written in 1988, poetry written over three decades in a variety of venues, and a 1987 college essay that draws on family and community interviews on the effects of residential schools."-- Cover; Dedication; Contents; Editors' Note; Acknowledgements; Introduction; Plays; Strength of Indian Women; Song of the Circle; Journey Through the Past to the Future; Echoes of Our Mothers' Past; Every Warrior's Song; Stories; That Grey Building; Theresa; The Letter; The Abyss; Poetry; The Storm; Woman Without a Tongue; Ghosts & Predators; L.A. A portrait of a young girl in the glorious wasteland of 1990s Los Angeles, Fade Into You recalls the hormonal haze and urgency of adolescence. High school junior Nikki Darling alternates between cutting class and getting high, falling into drugs, crushes, and counterculture to figure out how she fits into the world. Running increasingly wild with other angst-ridden outcasts, she pushes herself to the edge only to find herself trapped in the cyclical violence of growing up female. Written in dreamy, subterranean prose, this novel captures the reckless defiance and fragility of girlhood

In the chaos of early-1990s Russia, the wife and stepdaughter of a paralyzed veteran conceal the Soviet Union's collapse from him in order to keep him?and his pension?alive until it turns out the tough old man has other plans. Olga Slavnikova's The Man Who Couldn't Die tells the story of how two women try to prolong a life?and the means and meaning of their own lives?by creating a world that doesn't change, a Soviet Union that never crumbled. After her stepfather's stroke, Marina hangs Brezhnev's portrait on the wall, edits the Pravda articles read to him, and uses her media connections to cobble together entire newscasts of events that never happened. Meanwhile, her mother, Nina Alexandrovna, can barely navigate the bewildering new world outside, especially in comparison to the blunt reality of her uncommunicative husband. As Marina is caught up in a local election campaign that gets out of hand, Nina discovers that her husband is conspiring as well?to kill himself and put an end to the charade. Masterfully translated by Marian Schwartz, The Man Who Couldn't Die is a darkly playful vision of the lost Soviet past and the madness of the post-Soviet world that uses Russia's modern history as a backdrop for an inquiry into larger metaphysical questions

When Tomb of the Unknown Racist opens in 1999, Ellen--now sober, haunted by her activist past, her failed relationships--is peacefully taking care of her demented mother in South Carolina. Ellen's brother, Royce, was a celebrated novelist who, a decade earlier, saw his work adopted by racists and fell under the sway of white supremacy. Ellen thought him dead from a botched FBI raid on his compound. But when his estranged daughter turns up on the news claiming he might be responsible for kidnapping her two mixed-race children, Ellen travels to New Mexico to help her newfound niece. The book chronicles Ellen's search for Royce, her descent into the dark abyss of the simmering race war in the country, and the confrontation that occurs when she learns the truth about her family's past

A rich and rollicking first novel from one of America's most beloved and widely acclaimed nature writers, Robert Michael Pyle In Magdalena Mountain, Robert Michael Pyle's first and long-awaited novel, the award-winning naturalist proves he is as at home in an imagined landscape as he is in the natural one. At the center of this story of majesty and high mountain magic are three Magdalenas--Mary, a woman whose uncertain journey opens the book; Magdalena Mountain, shrouded in mystery and menace; and the all-black Magdalena alpine butterfly, the most elusive of several rare and beautiful species found on the mountain. And high in the Colorado Rocky Mountain wilderness, sharing the remote territory of the Erebia magdalena butterfly, lives the enigmatic Oberon, a reluctant de facto leader of the Grove, a diverse community of monks who share a devotion to nature. Converging in the same wilderness are October Carson, a beachcomber-wanderer in pursuit of the alpine butterflies he collects for museums; James Mead, a young graduate student intent upon learning the ecology of this seductive creature; and Mary Glanville, who also seeks the butterfly but can't remember why. While the mystery surrounding Mary takes a menacing turn, their shared quest pulls them deeper into the high mountain wilderness, culminating in a harrowing encounter on the stony slopes of Magdalena Mountain

Liverpool, 1752. William Kemp has lost a fortune in cotton speculation, and must recoup his losses if his son is to marry the wealthy woman whom he loves. His last resort is a slave ship, one that will take him to the Guinea coast, where he will trade for human cargo, then embark on the infamous Middle Passage. When disease ravages the ship and the African prisoners mutiny, William's profit-seeking venture falls apart. Slaves and sailors alike will join together to found a utopian community on the coast of Florida - not knowing that the vengeful, younger Kemp is in pursuit. Unsworth's tour de force is a profound meditation on the sacred hunger - the greed - couched within human nature, animating the slave trade. It is a novel that transcends its setting, illuminating larger truths that resonate to this day.

Themis has given birth to a son, Angelos, but is too malnourished to feed him so Aliki offers to wet nurse the boy. When Aliki is condemned to death, Themis promises to find and raise Aliki's son, Nikos, for the two boys share the same father - army captain, Fotis. Themis raises Angelos and Nikos as brothers but they are caught in the tensions between left and right. Angelos flees to America while Nikos, the more rebellious spirit, is killed when army tanks attack students demonstrating against the Junta. Themis is heartbroken, but the slaughter of the innocent students restores democracy to Greece, Nikos has not died in vain

"Martin Amis's most highly regarded novel--a blackly comic murder mystery about a murder that has not yet happened--in a full-cloth hardcover edition with silk ribbon marker. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY CONTEMPORARY CLASSICS. First published twenty-five years ago in 1989, London Fields is considered by many to be Amis's best novel. The narrator is an American writer living in London who has had writer's block for twenty years and is now terminally ill. The other main characters are a bored and wealthy banker, a small-time criminal, and Nicola Six, a young woman who knows she will be murdered a few minutes after midnight on November 5, 1999, and who goes in search of her killer. Set ten years in the future, against a backdrop of environmental and social degradation and the looming threat of world instability and nuclear war, this is a highly unusual mystery with an unexpected twist at the end"-- "Twenty-fifth anniversary hardcover edition of Martin Amis's acclaimed novel, with a new introduction, chronology, and bibliography"

"A thrilling novel about the generation of children of the major Colombian drug lords of the '90s, and a true portrait of Medellín today." Larry returns to the country twelve years after the disappearance of his father, a mobster who was close to Pablo Escobar in the 1990s. His remains have finally been found in a mass grave, and Larry is returning to reclaim them and give them a proper funeral. He is picked up at the airport by Pedro, his childhood friend, who takes him directly to the Alborada celebration, a popular festival at which the whole city loses control while fireworks burn all night. Larry's encounter with his mother, a former beauty queen who went from having it all to having nothing, and who is now sinking in depression and drug addiction; the memories of a turbulent family history; and the rediscovery of a city in which you can still see remnants of Colombia's darkest times are some of the threads interwoven in this novel. The author, with the narrative skill he is known for, manages to portray a generation of drug lords' children, who end up being victims of their own parents
