"Yeats Annual No. 18 is another special issue in this renowned research-level series offering a tribute to the pioneering Yeats scholar, A. Norman Jeffares. Memories of the man are shared by Seamus Heaney, Christopher Rush and Colin Smythe, who compiles a bibliography of Jeffares's work. Terence Brown, Neil Corcoran, Warwick Gould, Joseph M. Hassett, Phillip L. Marcus, Ann Saddlemyer, Ronald Schuchard, Deirdre Toomey and Helen Vendler offer essays on such topics as Yeats and the Colours of Poetry, Yeats's Shakespeare, Yeats and Seamus Heaney, Lacrimae Rerum and Tragic Joy, Raftery's work on Yeats's Thoor Ballylee, Edmund Dulac's portrait of Mrs George Yeats, The Tower as an anti-Modernist monument, with close studies of 'Vacillation', 'Her Triumph', and 'The Cold Heaven'. Throughout, the essays are inflected with memories of Jeffares and his critical methods. The volume is rounded with further essays on A Vision by Neil Mann and Matthew de Forrest, while reviews of recent editions and studies are provided by Matthew Campbell, Wayne K. Chapman, Sandra Clark, Denis Donoghue, Nicholas Grene, Joseph M. Hassett, and K.P.S. Jochum."-- ESSAYS IN MEMORY OF A. Introduction : feminism and early English studies now / Stacy S. Klein -- Anglo-Saxon women, woman, and womanhood / Gale R. Owen-Crocker -- Beyond Valkyries : drinking horns in Anglo-Saxon women's graves / Carol Neuman de Vegvar -- Embodied literacy : paraliturgical performance in the Life of Saint Leoba / Lisa M.C. New Readings on Women in Anglo-Saxon Literature and Culture' showcases current and original scholarship relating to women in Anglo-Saxon culture and in Anglo-Saxon studies and promises to stimulate new work in those areas. Honouring the eminent scholar Helen Damico as well as the seminal volume she edited almost thirty years ago with Alexandra Hennessy Olsen, the essays in this volume remind us that feminist inquiry is as vital and robust as it was then. Recognizing the plasticity of gender structures, roles, and relations in Anglo-Saxon literature and culture as well as within the modern discipline of Anglo-Saxon Studies, the essays reveal pluralities of gender bequeathed to us and encourage us to rethink power/gender dynamics in our present moment. As the Introduction explains, the essays in this collection offer "new paths into an increasingly rich area of study. Their diversity and freshness, along with their archival and methodological range, reveal a robust commitment to feminist interdisciplinarity, while their refusal of any grand master narrative takes seriously the complexity of Anglo-Saxon women?s lives, as well as the elusive relationship between history, literary symbols, textual representations, and social and cultural practices."

The protest theatrical space in twenty-first century social media oriented Africa : re-assessing Bole Butake's And palmwine will flow (1990) and Athol Fugard's Sizwe Bansi is dead (2014) / Irmagard Anchang Langmia This book is a collection of essays on various aspects of contemporary African fiction and theater. The breadth and depth of the collection speak to the innovative trends in African fiction and theater in an increasingly interconnected world. Whereas the views of the authors are inherently diverse, common grounds are gleaned in the commonality of the patterns of artistic visions shaped and given impetus by the peoples' new world realities; in this sense, the essays are at the same time in dialogue with each other. In the context of colonial and neo-colonial legacies that seem to forestall any sense of individual and collective self-fulfillment, contributors to this volume examine the pertinence of African fiction and theatre in imagining new vistas of re-conceptualizing the postcolonial condition in ways that re-galvanize the belief in an enabling future

Borrowing its title from renowned scholar Alexander Leggatt's landmark 1974 study, Shakespeare's Comedies of Love is a tribute to a critic who has shaped the way the world understands Shakespeare and his comedies. To help celebrate his distinguished career as a teacher and scholar, this collection of essays presents a wide range of new work on the Bard's comedies. The contributors cover diverse areas of inquiry, including the use of the comedies as a source of women's empowerment in nineteenth-century America; civic drama in Elizabethan London; male anxiety about women in the comedies; anti-Semitism in The Merchant of Venice; as well as some key productions of Shakespeare's comedies. Rich in detail and broad in scope, Shakespeare's Comedies of Love is a celebration of Leggatt's distinguished career, and an enduring collection of work on the world's most famous writer Introduction / Karen Bamford -- pt. 1. With essays by former students of John V. Fleming, the collection pays tribute to the Princeton University professor emeritus through wide-ranging scholarship and literary criticism. Including reflections on depictions of Bathsheba, Troilus and Criseyde, the Legend of Good Women, Chaucer's Pardoner, and Margery Kempe, these essays focus on literature while ranging into history, philosophy, and the visual arts. Taken together, the work suggests that the domain of the sacred, as perceived in the Middle Ages, can variously be seen as having a hierarchical or a complementary relationship to the things of this world."--Pub. desc "Literary depictions of the sacred and the secular from the Middle Ages are representative of the era's widely held cultural understandings related to religion and the nature of lived experience. Using late Medieval English literature, including some of Chaucer's writings, these essays do not try to define a secular realm distinct and separate from the divine or religious, but instead analyze intersections of the sacred and the profane, suggesting that these two categories are mutually constitutive rather than antithetical

"Habent sua fata libelli honors the work of Craig Kallendorf, offering studies in several fields in which he chiefly distinguished himself: the history of the book and reading, the classical tradition and reception studies, Renaissance humanism, and Virgilian scholarship with a special focus on the creative transformation of the Aeneid through the centuries. The volume is rounded out by an appreciation of Craig Kallendorf, including a review of his scholarship and its significance. In addition to the topics mentioned above, the volume's twenty-five contributions by scholars in America and Europe are of relevance to those working in the fields of classical philology, Neo-Latin, political philosophy, poetry and poetics, printing and print culture, Romance languages, art history, translation studies, and Renaissance and early modern Europe generally"--

    v. 1. Narrating multiple America(s) -- v. 2. (Multi)vocal exchanges across the Atlantic. "v. 1. Narrating Multiple America(s): A contribution to the ongoing debate in the field of American Studies in its most recent turn - Transnational American Studies - a paradigm shift in the discipline which runs counter to a consensus version of US history and culture. The essays highlight the dissenting narratives in the study of "America" as a mindscape, multivocal and varied in its discourses of race, class, gender, ethnicity, and nationality. They also evidence the interrelation of US with Europe, and examine how society, history, literature, and art intersect, providing alternative ways to comprehend the current geopolitical and cultural mindset on both sides of the Atlantic. These are interdisciplinary and diverse texts, authored by both senior leading scholars and promising younger researchers. The volume will benefit students and scholars of international American Studies, interdisciplinary and multicultural studies in history, sociology, modern languages literatures and cultures, cultural studies, comparative literatures, identity and ethnic studies, among others. It will also be of interest to researchers of American studies, transatlantic and transoceanic studies, diasporas and related fields of history, literature, art, and politics, as well as to the general reader with a background in the social sciences and the humanities. v. 2. (Multi)Vocal Exchanges Across the Ocean: The second volume of the project American Studies Over_Seas, an edited collection of texts honoring two pioneering Portuguese scholars in American Literature and Culture. Devoted to relations between Portugal and the United States, it includes essays by leading scholars whose research illuminates the multifarious ways in which history, sociology and literature intersect. A special feature of this collection is the inclusion of creative writing pieces that provide an imaginative intellectual backdrop to the transnational turn in American Studies. The literary contributions focus on diasporic experiences, dramatizing issues of ethnicity, identity, and interculturality. The essays of a more personal nature highlight the career of the two honorees, discuss protocols involving academic exchanges, and showcase dialogues between Europe and America over the past 30 years. Of benefit to the academic and the interested reader, this volume enriches the metaphor of the Atlantic Ocean as a space not only of struggle but also of ongoing conversation"--
