    Abstract: The southern Black Forest was temporarily covered by a ∼1000 km2 large ice cap during the Late Pleistocene. However, during the last glaciation maximum in the Alps the atmospheric circulation over Europe was presumably characterised by the advection of humid air masses from the Mediterranean Sea. As a consequence, the ice cap of the Black Forest was likely in a leeward position due to its location north of the Alps.
    This raises the question of whether it reached its last maximum extent simultaneously with the glaciers in the Alps. As modern dating techniques have hitherto not been applied to the southern Black Forest, the timing of the last local glaciation maximum remains poorly constrained.
    As a first step towards an independent regional glacier chronology, we present a critical re-examination of glacial landforms in the area north-west of the highest summit of the Black Forest (Feldberg, 1493 m a.s.l.). It relies on both the analysis of remote sensing data and field mapping.
    The review of previous studies highlights important disagreements regarding the location of ice-marginal positions and their correlation.
    In addition, our findings challenge earlier studies on the glaciation of the Black Forest: some previously described ice-marginal positions could not be confirmed, whereas some of the newly identified moraines are described for the first time.
    This highlights the need for detailed geomorphological investigations prior to the application of geochronological methods. A multi-ridged series of terminal moraines in one of the studied valleys, Sankt Wilhelmer Tal, is proposed as the main target for future dating. Due to discrepancies with earlier studies, future efforts should reinvestigate other key areas related to the last glaciation of the southern Black Forest

    Abstract: Recent studies from Europe have indicated long-term declines in insect populations. However there are few published studies which have investigated insect trends in North America. In this study, I analyzed butterfly surveys for abundance and richness trends across 132 transects in Wisconsin (USA) over the past 33 years. Additionally, I investigated the role of climate change, agricultural intensification, urbanization, vegetation changes and landscape homogenization in driving these trends. To achieve these objectives, I collected and analyzed climate data, as well as land cover and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data derived from Landsat satellite imagery. I examined these trends and drivers separately for three habitat types (grasslands, pine barrens and bogs) and at two scales (100m and 1km).

    Analysis revealed that butterfly abundance and species richness declined across all habitats, with an estimated abundance decrease of 2.9%–4.7% per year and a richness decrease of 1.2%–2.5% per year. Strongest declines in abundance and richness occurred in grasslands. This study did not find evidence that variables related to climate change, agriculture intensification or urbanization were associated with this decline. Change in greenness (NDVI mean trend) was positively associated with butterfly abundance and richness trends in pine barrens and grasslands, indicating that transects with higher rates of greening have lower rates of butterfly decline. On the other hand, average greenness (mean NDVI mean) was negatively associated with abundance trends in pine barrens and grasslands (at the 1km scale), implying that greener transects had a greater rate of butterfly decline. Finally, change in landscape heterogeneity (NDVI sd trend) was positively associated with butterfly abundance and richness trends in pine barrens, suggesting that transects with greater homogenization have greater butterfly decline.

    Our findings are consistent with previous studies from Europe and North America which have observed declines in butterfly abundance and richness. Evidence from this analysis indicated that these butterfly declines could not be entirely explained by variables related to climate change, agricultural intensification, urbanization, vegetation changes or landscape homogenization. Further investigation into the drivers of these declines is proposed. Finally, these findings add to literature which asserts that NDVI may be a useful metric in predicting butterfly community trends

    In den letzten Jahren haben Ressourcengewinnungstechnologien das Interesse der Forschung auf sich gezogen. Das drückt sich unter anderem bei Fernerkundungstechnologien für Rohstoffexploration aus, bei denen mehr und mehr auf luftgestützte, bildgebende Verfahren und moderne Datenverarbeitung gesetzt wird. Dieses Papier greift diese Thematik auf und untersucht anhand von vier Themen, wie sich das Handlungsfeld im Bereich der Fernerkundung für die Rohstofferkundung durch neue Technologien verändert. Die vier Themen, das ist das Besondere am vorliegenden Diskussionspapier, wurden in einem Forschungspraxisseminar an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena mit Studierenden im Fachbereich Umweltsoziologie erarbeitet. Ziel dieses Formates ist es, die Studierenden an Forschungsprozesse heran zu führen und die Anwendung des im Studium erworbenen theoretischen und methodischen Wissens anhand einer eigenen Forschungstätigkeit zu ermöglichen. Das Format ist auf die Dauer eines Semesters angelegt, so dass ein Forschungsprozess nur skizzenhaft durchlaufen und der Umfang und Tiefe insbesondere qualitativer sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung nicht erreicht werden kann. Zudem stellte die behandelte Materie für die Studierenden thematisches Neuland dar. Vor diesem Hintergrund sind die in diesem Diskussionspapier präsentierten Forschungsergebnisse zu interpretieren. Der Umgang mit qualitativen Daten war ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Seminars. Empirische Datengrundlage waren leitfadengestützte Interviews mit drei Experten, die sich mit der Entwicklung von Fernerkundungstechnologien befassen. Die Daten wurden von den Studierenden ausgewertet und mit Hilfe eines theoriebildenden Verfahrens analysiert und interpretiert. Den dokumentarischen Abschluss dieser Forschungspraxis bildet dieses Diskussionspapier, das auf der Leistung der Studierenden beruht. An dieser Stelle möchten es sich die Lehrenden nicht nehmen lassen, den Interviewten für ihre wertvolle Unterstützung und den Studierenden für diese spannende Zusammenarbeit zu danken!

    Abstract: Recent studies from Europe have indicated long-term declines in insect populations. However there are few published studies which have investigated insect trends in North America. In this study, I analyzed butterfly surveys for abundance and richness trends across 132 transects in Wisconsin (USA) over the past 33 years. Additionally, I investigated the role of climate change, agricultural intensification, urbanization, vegetation changes and landscape homogenization in driving these trends. To achieve these objectives, I collected and analyzed climate data, as well as land cover and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data derived from Landsat satellite imagery. I examined these trends and drivers separately for three habitat types (grasslands, pine barrens and bogs) and at two scales (100m and 1km).

    Analysis revealed that butterfly abundance and species richness declined across all habitats, with an estimated abundance decrease of 2.9%–4.7% per year and a richness decrease of 1.2%–2.5% per year. Strongest declines in abundance and richness occurred in grasslands. This study did not find evidence that variables related to climate change, agriculture intensification or urbanization were associated with this decline. Change in greenness (NDVI mean trend) was positively associated with butterfly abundance and richness trends in pine barrens and grasslands, indicating that transects with higher rates of greening have lower rates of butterfly decline. On the other hand, average greenness (mean NDVI mean) was negatively associated with abundance trends in pine barrens and grasslands (at the 1km scale), implying that greener transects had a greater rate of butterfly decline. Finally, change in landscape heterogeneity (NDVI sd trend) was positively associated with butterfly abundance and richness trends in pine barrens, suggesting that transects with greater homogenization have greater butterfly decline.

    Our findings are consistent with previous studies from Europe and North America which have observed declines in butterfly abundance and richness. Evidence from this analysis indicated that these butterfly declines could not be entirely explained by variables related to climate change, agricultural intensification, urbanization, vegetation changes or landscape homogenization. Further investigation into the drivers of these declines is proposed. Finally, these findings add to literature which asserts that NDVI may be a useful metric in predicting butterfly community trends

    Abstract: The southern Black Forest was temporarily covered by a ∼1000 km2 large ice cap during the Late Pleistocene. However, during the last glaciation maximum in the Alps the atmospheric circulation over Europe was presumably characterised by the advection of humid air masses from the Mediterranean Sea. As a consequence, the ice cap of the Black Forest was likely in a leeward position due to its location north of the Alps.
    This raises the question of whether it reached its last maximum extent simultaneously with the glaciers in the Alps. As modern dating techniques have hitherto not been applied to the southern Black Forest, the timing of the last local glaciation maximum remains poorly constrained.
    As a first step towards an independent regional glacier chronology, we present a critical re-examination of glacial landforms in the area north-west of the highest summit of the Black Forest (Feldberg, 1493 m a.s.l.). It relies on both the analysis of remote sensing data and field mapping.
    The review of previous studies highlights important disagreements regarding the location of ice-marginal positions and their correlation.
    In addition, our findings challenge earlier studies on the glaciation of the Black Forest: some previously described ice-marginal positions could not be confirmed, whereas some of the newly identified moraines are described for the first time.
    This highlights the need for detailed geomorphological investigations prior to the application of geochronological methods. A multi-ridged series of terminal moraines in one of the studied valleys, Sankt Wilhelmer Tal, is proposed as the main target for future dating. Due to discrepancies with earlier studies, future efforts should reinvestigate other key areas related to the last glaciation of the southern Black Forest
