    Biographical note: Christa Schönfelder teaches English literature at the University of Zurich. Her research interests include Romanticism, postmodern fiction, trauma theory, and gender studies. Trauma has become a hotly contested topic in literary studies. But interest in trauma is not new; its roots extend to the Romantic period, when novelists and the first psychiatrists influenced each others' investigations of the »wounded mind«. This book looks back to these early attempts to understand trauma, reading a selection of Romantic novels in dialogue with Romantic and contemporary psychiatry. It then carries that dialogue forward to postmodern fiction, examining further how empirical approaches can deepen our theorizations of trauma. Within an interdisciplinary framework, this study reveals fresh insights into the poetics, politics, and ethics of trauma fiction.

    Due to the large-scale global transformations of the 20th century, migration literature has become a vibrant genre over the last decades. In these novels, issues of transcultural identity and belonging naturally feature prominently. This study takes a closer look at the ways in which the idea of family informs processes of identity construction. It explores changing roles and meanings of the diasporic family as well as intergenerational family relations in a migration setting in order to identify the specific challenges, problems, and possibilities that arise in this context. This book builds on insights from different fields of family research (e.g. sociology, psychology, communication studies, memory studies) to provide a conceptual framework for the investigation of synchronic and diachronic family constellations and connections. The approach developed in this study not only sheds new light on contemporary British migration literature but can also prove fruitful for analyses of families in literature more generally. By highlighting the relevance and multifaceted nature of doing family, this study also offers new perspectives for transcultural memory studies.

    From the time it emerged in the 18th century until its collapse in the 20th century, the model of the bourgeois father held a central place in politics and literature. For the first time, the present study systematically examines the history of this construct with a focus on the interplay between the mechanisms of paternal authority and the emotionalization of the family as part of the bourgeois value system. The familial structures portrayed in literature are acknowledged as important blueprints for the representation of sovereignty and for the interplay between government and society.     How does the theatre critique the dominant gender hierarchy? Queer-feminist readings of contemporary theatre texts on identity, love, and family. Wie zeigt sich im Theater der Gegenwart das Private als politisch? Wie ist in diesem Zusammenhang feministische Kritik möglich? An der Schnittstelle von Literaturwissenschaft und Gender Studies analysiert Andrea Maria Zimmermann bisher eher unbekannte, aber thematisch und ästhetisch besonders reizvolle deutschsprachige Theatertexte aus den Jahren 2000 bis 2010. Aus einer queer-feministischen Perspektive entwickelt sie in Anlehnung an Luce Irigaray und Judith Butler ein Konzept von Kritik als dreifache Bewegung aus Rekonstruktion, Dekonstruktion und Utopie: das Spiel der Mimesis. In einem faszinierenden Dialog zwischen Theorie, Methode und Material fordert die Studie dazu auf, das zeitdiagnostische und politische Schreiben zeitgenössischer Theaterautor_innen zu entdecken.

Auf der Grundlage der Soziologie Pierre Bourdieus fragt Daniela Heitzmann, wie sich jene vermeintliche Naturtatsache als soziales Phänomen begreifen lässt, um dessen enge Verknüpfung mit dem Frausein einerseits und das eher lose Verhältnis zum Mannsein andererseits zu analysieren. Hierzu entwickelt sie ein Konzept der generativen Praxis, das zu einem Forschungsprogramm zur Genese von Generativitätsvorstellungen führt und dabei besonders die soziale Konstruktionsarbeit der Soziologie in den Fokus rückt.

    Moderne Adoption ist Gegenstand liberaler und 'multikultureller', biopolitischer und nationaler Imaginationen und Politiken. Die dabei entstehenden Ambivalenzen manifestieren sich in Spiel- und Dokumentarfilmen in einem sentimentalen Darstellungsmodus. Von »Stella Dallas« (1937) bis »First Person Plural« (2000) erzeugt Adoption affirmative, zugleich in Bezug auf Geschlecht, Klasse und 'Rasse' machtkritische Kippbilder. Ausgehend von diesem ambivalenten kritischen Potenzial des Sentimentalen führt Anja Michaelsen in ihrer Analyse der medialen Gefühlsdisposition gegenwärtiger Familien Kultur- und Filmwissenschaft mit internationaler kritischer Adoptionsforschung zusammen.
