    The author draws upon the methodologies of theater and cultural studies to examine the construction of "the Orient" on the Parisian stage during the nineteenth century, the period of France's first imperial expansions into North Africa and the Middle East.As an increasingly large segment of the French population moved into contact with the Middle East and North Africa as soldiers, colonial administrators, settlers, and merchants, the balance between fantasy and immediacy in Orientalized drama shifted. The domestic melodrama gave way to elaborately staged military spectacles based on current events. Performed before working-class audiences, many of whose members were to be called up for military service, these spectacles bore explicit political and imperial agendas.Mining rich archival resources of play-texts, censorship reports, critical reviews, and contemporary writings on performance practice, this book reveals the complex processes by which the institutions of popular culture helped shape nineteenth-century notions of race, ethnicity, and nationality.

Jahrhunderts nimmt die Südsee als ersehntes, erforschtes und kolonial erobertes Paradies großen Raum ein.Gabriele Dürbeckweist in der Südseeliteratur ein nahezu konstantes Repertoire an exotistischen und perhorreszierenden Stereotypen des Fremden nach, das unterschiedlichen ästhetischen, wissenschaftspopularisierenden und politischen Zielen dient. Ihre textanalytische und diskursgeschichtliche Studie zeigt anhand vonReiseberichten, Zeitschriftenbeiträgen, Abenteuerromanen und Memoiren die Verschiebungen innerhalb eines heterogenen Ozeanismus-Diskurses auf. The South Seas play a major part in 19th century German literature and journalism, where they figure as a paradise representing the object of desire, research, and colonial conquest. This book demonstrates that literature on the South Seas displays an almost uniform repertory of exoticizing and fear-mongering stereotypes of the foreigner and things foreign that served various different purposes (esthetic standards, political aims, popularization of science). With reference to travel journals, magazine articles, adventure novels, and memoirs, the study’s focus on textual analysis and the history of discourse accentuates the shifts taking place within the heterogeneous discourse on Oceania.     Der »Orient« als kulturgeografische Kategorie ist zugleich diffus und überdeterminiert: changierend zwischen den Klischees von Tyrannei und Despotismus einerseits, Sinnlichkeit und Weisheit andererseits. Obwohl die Idee einer orientalischen Entität ideologiekritisch hinterfragt worden ist, wird der Topos heute nicht nur verklärend als touristisches Reiseziel in Katalogen gepriesen, sondern auch in der aktuellen politischen Situation als Bild des arabischen, orientalischen Anderen massenmedial fortgeschrieben. In diesem Kontext erhalten Kunst und Literatur eine wichtige Funktion als Reflexionsmedien, mit denen Fremdbilder kritisch hinterfragt werden können. In zehn interdisziplinären Beiträgen analysiert der vorliegende Sammelband künstlerische und literarische Praktiken der Differenzsetzung der »orientalischen Fremde«.

    In this 1998 book, Meyda Yegenoglu investigates the intersection between post-colonial and feminist criticism, focusing on the Western fascination with the veiled women of the Orient. She examines the veil as a site of fantasy and of nationalist ideologies and discourses of gender identity, analyzing travel literature, anthropological and literary texts to reveal the hegemonic, colonial identity of the desire to penetrate the veiled surface of 'otherness'. Representations of cultural difference and sexual difference are shown to be inextricably linked, and the figure of the Oriental woman to have functioned as the veiled interior of Western identity. Ihre textanalytische und diskursgeschichtliche Studie zeigt anhand vonReiseberichten, Zeitschriftenbeiträgen, Abenteuerromanen und Memoiren die Verschiebungen innerhalb eines heterogenen Ozeanismus-Diskurses auf. The South Seas play a major part in 19th century German literature and journalism, where they figure as a paradise representing the object of desire, research, and colonial conquest. This book demonstrates that literature on the South Seas displays an almost uniform repertory of exoticizing and fear-mongering stereotypes of the foreigner and things foreign that served various different purposes (esthetic standards, political aims, popularization of science). With reference to travel journals, magazine articles, adventure novels, and memoirs, the study’s focus on textual analysis and the history of discourse accentuates the shifts taking place within the heterogeneous discourse on Oceania.     In this 1998 book, Meyda Yegenoglu investigates the intersection between post-colonial and feminist criticism, focusing on the Western fascination with the veiled women of the Orient. She examines the veil as a site of fantasy and of nationalist ideologies and discourses of gender identity, analyzing travel literature, anthropological and literary texts to reveal the hegemonic, colonial identity of the desire to penetrate the veiled surface of 'otherness'. Representations of cultural difference and sexual difference are shown to be inextricably linked, and the figure of the Oriental woman to have functioned as the veiled interior of Western identity.
