Introduction /Tom Hanks --Mapping the moon /Beth Saunders --Daydreams by moonlight /Mia Fineman --Moonshot /Mia Fineman --Art after Apollo /Beth Saunders --Works in the exhibition. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, Apollo's Muse honors the rich history of photographic representations of the moon, from rarely seen early daguerreotypes to contemporary video art. Engaging and accessible, the book explores how photographers captured this celestial body-and how the images have in turn inspired artists, writers, and scientists. The book's wide-ranging focus includes extraordinary reproductions of the first successful series of lunar daguerreotypes by the American photographer John Adams Whipple, along with film stills from Voyage dans la Lune (1902) by Georges Melies; American "paper moon" studio portraits; images from the Apollo mission; and works by contemporary artists, including Vija Celmins, Roy Lichtenstein, Aleksandra Mir, Vik Muniz, Nam June Paik, and Robert Rauschenberg. Related prints, drawings, paintings, and astronomical instruments explore artists' fascination with the moon, as an object of both art and science. A foreword by actor Tom Hanks, star of the award-winning 1995 film Apollo 13, outlines the importance of lunar images to art and cinema, reinforcing the universal fascination with representations of the cosmos. Exhibition: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA (01.07-22.09.2019)

"Thoughtfully illustrated, this volume highlights a selection of photographs of African American family life between the 1970s and the early 2000s--pictures that were lost by their original owners and then found by the artist Zun Lee on a street in Detroit in 2012, marking the beginning of the Fade Resistance collection of more than 4,000 Polaroids. Lee describes the collection as an important record of Black visual self-representation and a means to "reflect the way Black people saw themselves on their terms--without the intention of being seen, or judged, by others." To Lee, these powerful photographs are an expression of "Black life mattering." These vivid images chronicle milestones such as weddings, birthdays and graduations, as well as quiet daily moments, offering contemporary views long ignored or erased by mainstream culture. Together, these works highlight the role snapshots have played in Black life, as tools to challenge stereotypical portrayals and as a means to memorialize family, culture and heritage. Topics such as self-representation, visual history and the social power of photographs are addressed in critical texts by Sophie Hackett, Stefano Harney, Zun Lee and Fred Moten, and an original contribution by celebrated poet Dawn Lundy Martin."--

"Between 1990 and 1998, Guido Guidi made five separate trips to Milan and its surrounding areas. Cinque viaggi brings together the photographs made there, forming an investigation of one city and its peripheries in the throes of economic and social transformation. As Guidi follows the canal from out in the suburbs toward the city centre, his attention and visual language move from the vernacular to the metropolitan, from wider horizontal views to vertical 'cuts' in the urban fabric, from entire buildings and scenes to glimpsed façades and doorways. Along the way, we also encounter inhabitants: a group of young men gathered in a Pasolini-like scene on a bridge in the city's outskirts; occasional passers-by working, shopping, or stopping to smoke on the city streets; disconnected couples and disparate individuals whose loose citizenship coheres the urban sprawl."--

The Hidden Beauty of Seeds & Fruit' is a unique photographic study of seeds and fruit in mind-blowing magnification that celebrates the wonders of nature and science. Each picture captures the breathtaking and beautiful details of the world of carpology, the study of seeds and fruit. Each picture in this book is created from approximately 8,000 individual photographs. The samples come from the carpological collection at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. After searching through thousands of specimens, Biss has selected the 60 most striking samples to be featured in this book. As with Microsculpture, each image will be captioned with scientific information and it will be on exhibition for the first time at the Royal Botanic Garden in Spring 2021
