"Michael Lent asks what role art has in colonisation and subsequent dissolution. He proposes a practice informed by the fatal strategies and 'raw' phenomenology of Jean Baudrillard as a challenge to a system of disappearance. Focusing on the otherness of space to prevent its ultimate dissolution, Lent promotes a spatial practice of radical alterity. Examining ideas of disappearance put forth by Baudrillard and Paul Virilio, he utilises art as a means for investigating loss of potentiality and experience through the representation of space, shifting their ideas - originally ascribed to objects - into a new emphasis. This book ultimately attempts to break a cyclical system that causes everything to disappear into representation and equivalency."...

Resumé This brief study on ‘Forced Charity’ discusses aspects of 2 Cor. in lieu of a Durkheimian and Rappaportian theory of culture and religion. I combine these theoretical approaches with a Greimasian semiotic model focused on contractual thinking. It is emphasised that the letter may be conceived of as a rhetorical whole of a symbouleutic nature. Based on its main thesis (1:12-14), the letter aims to move its recipients from a partial to a full understanding. Rather than seeing chapters 8-9 as a haphazard element of the discourse, they constitute the rhetorical turning point of the letter. As indexical token the collection serves rhetorically as proof of the recipients’ willingness to acknowledge Paul’s discursivisation. Although Paul emphasises how God loves a cheerful giver, the collection by virtue of its indexical nature connected to a testing of the recipients’ sincerity is anything but free. It mirrors forced charity.

In The Economics of Friendship, Tazuko Angela van Berkel offers an account of the notion of reciprocity in 5th- and 4th-century Greek incepting social theory. The preoccupation with the norms of philia and charis, conspicuous in sources from the Classical Period, is a symptom of changes in the shape of ancient economic activities: the ubiquitous norm that one should reciprocate benefit with benefit becomes a source of conceptual confusion in the Classical Period, where other forms of exchange become conceptually available. This confusion and tension between different models of mutuality, is productive: it is the impetus for folk theory in comedy, tragedy and oratory, as well as philosophical reflection (Xenophon, Plato, Aristotle) on what it is that binds people together

This book ultimately attempts to break a cyclical system that causes everything to disappear into representation and equivalency."
