This book analyzes and contextualizes Auerbach ’s life and mind in the wide ideological, philological, and historical context of his time, especially the rise of Aryan philology and its eventual triumph with the Nazi Revolution or the Hitler Revolution in Germany of 1933. It deals specifically with his struggle against the premises of Aryan philology, based on völkisch mysticism and Nazi historiography, which eliminated the Old Testament from German Kultur and Volksgeist in particular, and Western culture and civilization in general. It examines in detail his apologia for, or defense and justification of, Western Judaeo-Christian humanist tradition at its gravest existential moment. It discusses Auerbach’s ultimate goal, which was to counter the overt racist tendencies and völkish ideology in Germany, or the belief in the Community of Blood and Fate of the German people, which sharply distinguished between Kultur and civilization and glorified völkisch nationalism over European civilization. The volume includes an analysis of the entire twenty chapters of Auerbach’s most celebrated book: Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, 1946 Introduction -- Erich Auerbach: Life, Times, and Works -- Dante and the “Discovery of European Representation of Man” -- The Crisis of German Philology: Aryan Philology and the Elimination of the Old Testament -- Two Responses to the German Crisis of Philology: Ernst Robert Curtius and Erich Auerbach -- Exile and Interpretation: The Struggle against Aryan Philology and Nazi Barbarism -- Mimesis - An Apologia for Western Judaeo-Christian Humanist Tradition in an Age of Peril, Tyranny, and Barbarism -- Epilogue: Exile, Interpretation, and Alienation -- Appendix 1: Constructing and Representing Reality: Hegel and the Making of Mimesis -- Appendix 2: Exile and Criticism: Edward Said’s Interpretation of Erich Auerbach -- Bibliography -- Author Index -- Subject Index

This book is a collection of traditional German fairy tales and fables, deliberately transformed into utopian narratives and social commentary by political activists in the Weimar Republic (1919-1933). Against a backdrop of financial and political instability, widespread homelessness, and the reformation of public institutions, numerous gifted writers such as Berta Lask, Kurt Schwitters, Hermynia zur Mühlen, Oskar Maria Graf, Bruno Schönlank, and Joachim Ringelnatz responded to the need for hope among the common people by creating fairy tales and fables that offered a new and critical vision of social conditions. Though many of their tales deal with the grim situation of common people and their apparent helplessness, they are founded on the principle of hope. This revised edition includes over 50 illustrations by contemporary international artists who reveal how similar the Weimar conditions were to the conditions in which we presently live. In this respect, the Weimar fairy tales and fables have not lost their spirit and significance Recovering the Utopian Spirit of Fairy Tales and Fables from the Weimar Republic; Jack Zipes -- Happiness; Kurt Schwitters -- A Fairy Tale about God and Kings; Carl Ewald -- The Giant and his Suit of Armour; Edwin Hoernle -- The Boy who Wanted to Fight with a Dragon; Berta Lask -- Kuttel Daddeldu Tells his Children the Fairy Tale about Little Red Cap; Joachim Ringelnatz -- The Little King and the Sun; Edwin Hoernle -- The Honest Seamen / Learn to Grasp the World from Others; Joachim Ringelnatz -- The Fence / The Servant; Hermynia Zur Mühlen -- The Victor; Béla Balázs -- The Patched Trousers; Bruno Schönlank -- The Fairy Tale of the Wise Man; Eugen Lewin-Dorsch -- The Holy Wetness; Maria Szucsich -- The Enchanted King / Burufu the Magician; Robert Grötzsch -- Baberlababb / The Fairy Tale of the King; Oskar Maria Graf -- The Castle with the Three Windows; Heinrich Schulz -- The Giant Spider; Anna Mosegaard -- Felix the Fish; Robert Grötzsch -- The Poodle and the Schnauzer / The Chameleon; Edwin Hoernle -- The Triumph of the Wolves / The Chameleon / The Revolution in the Zoo; Felix Fechenbach -- The Fairy Tale of the Bear, the Wolf and the Sly Fox; Béla Illés -- The Glasses; Hermynia Zur Mühlen -- Once upon a Time There was a Tiny Mouse; Kurt Schwitters -- The Silent Engine Room; Heinrich Schulz -- Notes on the Authors & Illustrators

This book examines performative strategies that contest nationalist prejudices in representing the conditions of refugees, the stateless and the dispossessed. In the light of the European Union failing to find a political solution to the current migration crisis, it considers a variety of artistic works that have challenged the deficiencies in governmental and transnational practices, as well as innovative efforts by migrants and their hosts to imagine and build a new future. It discusses a diverse range of performative strategies, moving from a consideration of recent adaptations of Greek tragedy, to performances employing fictive identification, documentary dramas, immersive theatre, over-identification and subversive identification, nomadism and political activism. This study will appeal to those interested in questions of statelessness, migration, and the problematic role of the nation-state Introduction -- 1. Recontextualization and Adaptation of Ancient Greek Dramas -- 2. Performative Identification in Fictional Accounts -- 3. Documentary Theatre by and about Refugees -- 4. Unwed Mothers, Asylums and Immersive Theatre -- 5. Creating Dissensus and Cross-identification -- 6. Subversive Identification and Over-identification -- 7. Two Approaches to Nomadism: Fluxus and Théâtre du Soleil -- 8. The Institutional Response of the German Theatre -- Conclusion

This open access book explores the ambiguity of East Central Europe during the twentieth century, examining local contexts through a comparative and transnational reworking of theoretical models in postcolonial studies. Since the early modern period, East Central Europe has arguably been an object of imperialism. However, at the same time East Central European states have been seen to be colonial actors, with individuals from the region often associating themselves with colonial discourses in extra-European contexts. Spanning a broad time period until after the Second World War and covering the governance of Communism and its legacies, the book examines how cultural and literary narratives from East Central Europe have created and revised historical knowledge, making use of collective memory to feed into identity models.
