    This annual yearbook presents essays in environmental history based on lectures given at the Göttingen study group “Environmental History” by external authors. As previous yearbooks it is dedicated to the plurality of approaches in environmental history and serves as a valuable source for information about current research in that realm. Seit seiner Gründung vor annähernd 25 Jahren hat sich das Göttinger Umwelthistorische Kolloquium zu einer Einrichtung entwickelt, welche die vielfältigen, thematisch einschlägigen Aktivitäten des Standortes wie auch des deutschsprachigen Raumes durch Austausch von Forschungsergebnissen und Sichtweisen bündelt. Von hier haben auch einige Unternehmungen ihren Ausgang genommen, welche zum heutigen Profil der Umweltgeschichte spürbar beitrugen. Der Band vereinigt Beiträge zum Kolloquium des Sommersemesters 2007 und des Wintersemesters 2008.

    Auch im ökologischen Landbau dominieren zunehmend Konventionalisierungsprozesse und Massenproduktion. Gleichzeitig sind gerade kleinere Betriebe darum bemüht, ökologische Grundnahrungsmittel zu produzieren, ohne dafür auf Praktiken der Ausbeutung von Umwelt, Tier und Mensch zurückzugreifen. Die Autorinnen des Bandes stellen österreichische Bio Landwirt*innen mit unterschiedlichsten Werdegängen vor, die unter schwierigen Voraussetzungen erfolgreich Alternativen im Öko-Landbau umsetzen. Als zentral erweisen sich dabei die Ansätze zu einem um die Dimension der Sorge erweiterten Verständnis von Landwirtschaft sowie das Anknüpfen an die Ressourcen aus den eigenen Familiensystemen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie zur »Caring Agriculture« fußen auf einer mehrjährigen agrarsoziologisch-kulturanthropologischen Untersuchung auf Basis der Genogrammarbeit.

    Can education play a role in fostering economic growth and simultaneously decrease pressure on forests? The aim of this study is to show that it can. Human capital formation is a key element in a development strategy that includes natural resource conservation within the framework of sustained economic growth and poverty alleviation. Consequently, it is not by chance that Guatemala is experiencing both minimal per capital income growth and high deforestation while having one of the lowest educational levels in Latin America. However, since many assumptions about educational benefits are controversial and many aspects depend on broader issues, human capital formation can only be one piece in a multidimensional puzzle. This study is organized into three parts, each one of which can be read independently: first, a macroeconomic assessment of education and other factors involved in the country’s growth trajectory; second, a rural analysis indicating the root causes of deforestation and the role education can play to slow down habitat loss; third, the highlighting of some elements indispensable to reform and to subsequent improvement of the quality of rural schooling.

    There are few more urgent topics in today's world, so full of ecological uncertainty. Hydropower Economics uses various econometric measures to examine sustainable alternative energy sources. It kicks off by modeling hydropower, yes, but it does not end there. Forsund has extended his model to include thermal power and wind power, too - forms of alternative energy that are taking on an ever larger profile. The focus of HYDROPOWER ECONOMICS is to provide qualitative economic analyses of how to utilize stored water in a hydropower system with fixed generating capacities. The problem is dynamic because water used today to generate electric power may alternatively be used tomorrow. The distinctive feature of this book is to provide a social planning perspective on the optimal use of water. This is a prerequisite for understanding and evaluating newly-established electricity markets. The dynamic nature of hydropower production, the high number of units involved, and the inherent stochastic nature of inflow of water make optimization problems quite difficult technically to solve. In the engineering literature complex stochastic dynamic programming models are used and solution algorithms developed for real-life data, with numerical solutions provided. In this book a much more simplified mathematical approach suited to obtain qualitative conclusions is followed. Standard nonlinear programming models for discrete time are used and the Kuhn - Tucker conditions employed extensively for qualitative interpretations. A special graphical presentation, termed a bathtub diagram, is developed for two-period illustration.

    There are few more urgent topics in today's world, so full of ecological uncertainty. Hydropower Economics uses various econometric measures to examine sustainable alternative energy sources. It kicks off by modeling hydropower, yes, but it does not end there. Forsund has extended his model to include thermal power and wind power, too - forms of alternative energy that are taking on an ever larger profile. The focus of HYDROPOWER ECONOMICS is to provide qualitative economic analyses of how to utilize stored water in a hydropower system with fixed generating capacities. The problem is dynamic because water used today to generate electric power may alternatively be used tomorrow. The distinctive feature of this book is to provide a social planning perspective on the optimal use of water. This is a prerequisite for understanding and evaluating newly-established electricity markets. The dynamic nature of hydropower production, the high number of units involved, and the inherent stochastic nature of inflow of water make optimization problems quite difficult technically to solve. In the engineering literature complex stochastic dynamic programming models are used and solution algorithms developed for real-life data, with numerical solutions provided. In this book a much more simplified mathematical approach suited to obtain qualitative conclusions is followed. Standard nonlinear programming models for discrete time are used and the Kuhn - Tucker conditions employed extensively for qualitative interpretations. A special graphical presentation, termed a bathtub diagram, is developed for two-period illustration.

    Seit 25 Jahren wird das Konzept der Nachhaltigkeit intensiv diskutiert. Die Leistung dieses Ansatzes liegt darin, dass ökonomische, soziale und ökologische Aspekte in einen Gesamtkontext gestellt werden. Mit ihnen werden die Dimensionen Wirtschaftlichkeit, soziale Sicherheit und Umweltverträg-lichkeit betrachtet. Diese sollen so aufeinander abgestimmt werden, dass kein Ziel zulasten eines anderen verfolgt wird. Zur politischen Umsetzung ist es notwendig, die unterschiedlichen Ziele der Nachhaltigkeit auch messen zu können. Die Nachhaltigkeitsberichterstattung der Bundesregierung umfasst ein Set von 21 Bereichen mit 35 Einzelindikatoren, welches die ökonomische Dimension der Nachhaltigkeit aber nur unzureichend berücksichtigt. Daher werden in dieser Analyse 13 weitere Indikatoren ökonomischer Nachhaltigkeit vorgeschlagen. Die Berücksichtigung dieser Indikatoren bei der nationalen Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie bietet die Möglichkeit, die langfristige Tragfähigkeit der sozialen Sicherungssysteme, die Sicherung der Wachstumsbedingungen und zentrale Standortbedingungen für die Wirtschaft in Deutschland mit in den Blick zu nehmen. For 25 years now the concept of sustainability has been the subject of intense debate. The merit of this approach is that economic, social and ecological factors are seen as aspects of a single overall picture. With them the degree of economic efficiency, social security and environmental friendliness in a country can be observed. The idea is to adjust these three co-ordinates so that no one objective is pursued to the detriment of the others. For this policy to be implemented it must be possible to measure the various sustainability targets. The Federal Government's reporting on sustainability consists of a set of 21 fields with 35 individual indicators, which, however, takes too little account of the economic aspects of sustainability. This analysis therefore proposes 13 further indicators to correct the imbalance. If the national sustainability strategy duly takes these indicators into consideration, the long-term stability of the social security system, the prerequisites for growth and the key criteria for ensuring that Germany remains an attractive location for business can be included in the picture.

Diese drei Zielsetzungen stehen gleichberechtigt nebeneinander. Auch wenn das Thema meist in Bezug auf ökologische Fragestellungen diskutiert wird, ist Nachhaltigkeit mehr als reine Umweltpolitik. Die Nachhaltigkeitspolitik muss an eine komplexer werdende Welt angepasst werden. Bislang dominierten End-of-Pipe-Lösungen, die auf klar abgegrenzten Feldern angewendet wurden. Die Probleme der Zukunft sind multikausal und damit schwerer zu fassen, wie man am Stand der Diskussion in vielen Politikfeldern – von der Mobilität bis zur Klimafolgenanpassung – festmachen kann. Jedoch lassen sich die drei Dimensionen der Nachhaltigkeit nur in einem marktwirtschaftlichen und regelbasierten Ordnungsrahmen gemeinsam verfolgen. Der Markt als Entdeckungsverfahren fördert gerade bei komplexer werdenden Problemen effizientere Ergebnisse zutage als direkte staatliche Regulierungen.
