    Abstract ; Thema der Arbeit sind die genealogischen Fürstenpreisgedichte Ynglingatal, Háleygjatal und Nóregs konungatal, eine Textgruppe aus dem Bereich der norrönen Skaldendichtung. Die Gedichte wurden vor allem im Kontext dynastischer Interessen in mittelalterlichen historiographischen Werken tradiert und sind in ihrer Datierung umstritten. Sie behandeln Genealogien norwegischer Herrschergeschlechter und die Königsreihe mit einem Fokus auf dem Tod der Fürsten. Mit der Verbindung der Aspekte Genealogie und Tod entziehen sie sich einer eindeutigen Klassifikation. Die Arbeit erfasst diese Textgruppe in ihren charakteristischen Merkmalen, ordnet sie literaturhistorisch ein und will zu einer präziseren Bestimmung der Texte beitragen. Sie gliedert sich in zwei Teile. Der erste Teil behandelt die literaturhistorischen Kontexte: Zum einen die Frage der Überlieferung von Skaldendichtung. Zum anderen werden die Gedichte in den Kontext genealogischer und enumerativer Literatur eingeordnet und zu verwandten Dichtungsarten in Beziehung gesetzt. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit besteht aus einer Analyse von Ynglingatal, Háleygjatal und Nóregs konungatal unter Berücksichtigung ihrer Überlieferung. Das wesentliche Ergebnis ist, dass sich die Vorstellung eines Texttyps genealogischer Skaldendichtung retrospektiv im 12./13. Jahrhundert entwickelt haben muss. Es zeigt sich, dass die Frage der Datierung der Texte nicht mehr zu beantworten ist, da die Texte in der Überlieferung umgestaltet wurden. Es wird deutlich, dass dieser Texttyp seine Ursprünge in einer mit dem Tod verbundenen poetischen Tradition hatte und die Texte im Zuge genealogisch-dynastischer Interessen die Form fanden, in der sie in der Historiographie überliefert wurden. Dort schließlich begegnen Ynglingatal und Háleygjatal als emblematische Vertreter wikingerzeitlicher Skaldendichtung. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass die überlieferungsgeschichtliche Perspektive ein unabdingbarer Teil der Analyse von Skaldengedichten sein muss. ; Abstract ; The topic of this paper are the genealogical praise poems Ynglingatal, Háleygjatal and Nóregs konungatal, a text group within the Old Norse skaldic poetry. The poems were transmitted in medieval historiographic works, above all within the context of dynastic interests. The dating remains controversial. They deal with the genealogies of the Norwegian dynasties and the order of the kings, with a focus on the dukes’ deaths. By linking the aspects of genealogy and death, they elude a distinct literary classification. This paper covers this text group in its characteristic features, classifies it in a literary-historical context and aims at contributing to a more precise determination of the texts. It is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the literary-historical contexts, firstly with the issue of the transmission of skaldic poetry. Then the poems are analysed within the context of genealogical and enumerative literature, and are seen in connection to related kinds of poetry. The second part of the paper is an analysis of Ynglingatal, Háleygjatal and Nóregs konungatal with particular focus on their transmission. The main result is that the concept of genealogical skaldic poetry as literary genre developed retrospectively in the 12th/13th centuries. It can be shown that the issue of dating the texts cannot be answered definitively since the texts have been altered in the course of their transmission. It becomes apparent that this text type had its origins in a poetic tradition which is related to death, and which assumed the form in which it was passed on in historiographical works mainly due to genealogical and dynastic interests. Here Ynglingatal and Háleygjatal represent an emblematic representation of the viking-age skaldic poetry. The paper shows that the perspective of medieval transmission of skaldic poems needs to be an indispensable part within the analysis of that literary genre.

    Lists and catalogues have been en vogue in philosophy, cultural, media and literary studies for more than a decade. These explorations of enumerative modes, however, have not yet had the impact on classical scholarship that they deserve. While they routinely take (a limited set of) ancient models as their starting point, there is no comparably comprehensive study that focuses on antiquity; conversely, studies on lists and catalogues in Classics remain largely limited to individual texts, and – with some notable exceptions – offer little in terms of explicit theorising. The present volume is an attempt to close this gap and foster the dialogue between the recent theoretical re-appraisal of enumerative modes and scholarship on ancient cultures.The 16 contributions to the volume juxtapose literary forms of enumeration with an abundance of ancient non-, sub- or para-literary practices of listing and cataloguing. In their different approaches to this vast and heterogenous corpus, they offer a sense of the hermeneutic, epistemic and methodological challenges with which the study of enumeration is faced, and elucidate how pragmatics, materiality, performativity and aesthetics are mediated in lists and catalogues.

    Abstract: The following project looks at the manifold functions of the literary list in the context of consumerism. The form of the list emerges as the crucial device for depicting the social side of consumption. The novels considered for the three case studies in this project range from the heyday of realist fiction in the late nineteenth century to (post)modern representations of consumerism at the end of the twentieth century. Despite the novels spanning roughly two hundred years, the list form itself has remained surprisingly stable and constant while the content of the list proves to be adaptable to different contexts and literary periods. As such, the list is able to negotiate the tension between form and content, narrative and description, and the opposing attitudes of celebration and anxiety which consumption evokes. Specifically, the horizontal list of consumer goods manages to accurately reflect the consumerist condition by invoking the ‘everything’ of open-ended lists, the rigidity of a non-changing form and the affordances of practical lists, and the social. I will show that an increasing itemization, that is, the tendency to perceive life in a more itemized form, is linked to two important consumer developments – the department store and the modern metropolis – and that this phenomenon is represented in literature in the form of the list. As the Other in the literary text, the list points towards its own constructedness and thereby reveals the constructedness of consumption which the spectacle of description tried to hide Abstract: Das vorliegende Projekt beschäftigt sich mit den verschiedenen Funktionen der literarischen Liste im Rahmen von Konsum. Die Form der Liste stellt sich dabei als das wichtige Mittel zur Repräsentation von Konsum heraus. Die Romane, die für die drei Fallbeispiele herangezogen wurden, reichen vom Höhepunkt des Realismus Ende des neunzehnten Jahrhunderts bis zu Darstellungen von Konsum in der (Post)Moderne. Obwohl die Romane gut zweihundert Jahre umfassen, zeigt sich, dass die Form der Liste überraschend gleichbleibend und stabil ist. Der Inhalt der Liste jedoch, offenbart sich als flexibel und anpassbar an verschiedene Kontexte und literarische Perioden. Dabei stellt sich heraus, dass die Liste in der Lage ist, die verschiedenen Spannungsfelder zwischen Narration und Deskription, Form und Inhalt, und die gegensätzlichen Einstellungen gegenüber einem immer zunehmenden Konsum, Zelebration und Angst, kritisch auszuhandeln. Besonders die horizontale Aufzählung von Konsumgütern sei hier hervorzustellen, als die textuelle Form, die in der Lage ist, den Konsumzustand darzustellen. Zum einen indem sie das ‚alles’ darstellt, welches häufig bei offenen Listen zu finden ist. Aber auch weil sie die Starrheit einer sich nicht veränderten Form hervorhebt und sowohl die Affordanzen der praktischen Liste als auch das Soziale in den Text trägt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werde ich zeigen, dass eine zunehmende Itemisierung – also die Tendenz das Leben in einer itemisierten Form wahrzunehmen und in kleine Teile zu brechen – eng zusammenhängt mit zwei wichtigen Konsumentwicklungen: der Eröffnung der ersten Warenhäuser und der modernen Metropole. Als das Andere in einem literarischen Text, hebt die Liste ihre eigene Konstruktion hervor und enthüllt dabei das Konstrukt des Konsums welches, im literarischen Text, vom Spektakel der Beschreibung versteckt wird

    Lists and catalogues have been en vogue in philosophy, cultural, media and literary studies for more than a decade. These explorations of enumerative modes, however, have not yet had the impact on classical scholarship that they deserve. While they routinely take (a limited set of) ancient models as their starting point, there is no comparably comprehensive study that focuses on antiquity; conversely, studies on lists and catalogues in Classics remain largely limited to individual texts, and - with some notable exceptions - offer little in terms of explicit theorising. The present volume is an attempt to close this gap and foster the dialogue between the recent theoretical re-appraisal of enumerative modes and scholarship on ancient cultures.The 16 contributions to the volume juxtapose literary forms of enumeration with an abundance of ancient non-, sub- or para-literary practices of listing and cataloguing. In their different approaches to this vast and heterogenous corpus, they offer a sense of the hermeneutic, epistemic and methodological challenges with which the study of enumeration is faced, and elucidate how pragmatics, materiality, performativity and aesthetics are mediated in lists and catalogues
