Tyler offers a bold literary and historical analysis of both texts and reveals how the two queens actively engaged in the patronage of history-writing and poetry to exercise their royal authority.     (Current) Research Projects ; fp "Jane Austen's fiction manuscripts are the first significant body of holograph evidence surviving for any British novelist. They represent every stage of her writing career and a variety of physical states: working drafts, fair copies, and handwritten publications for private circulation. The manuscripts were held in a single collection until 1845, when at her sister Cassandra's death they were dispersed among family members, with a second major dispersal, to public institutions and private collections, in the 1920s. Digitization enables their virtual reunification and will provides scholars with the first opportunity to make simultaneous ocular comparison of their different physical and conceptual states; it will facilitate intimate and systematic study of Austen's working practices across her career, a remarkably neglected area of scholarship within the huge, world-wide Austen critical industry."

    Der Zug der republikanischen Deutschen demokratischen Legion aus Paris im Frühjahr 1848 in das aufständische Baden und ihre Zerschlagung bei Dossenbach waren unzweifelhaft eine Gelenkstelle im Leben ihres Präsidenten, des Dichters Georg Herwegh (1817-1875). [.] Ob tatsächlich "Verrat" die zentrale Rolle bei der Niederlage der Legion spielte, wie Georg Herwegh in seinem Brief von 1870 verbittert behauptet und wie es auch Stephan Reinhardt in der jüngsten Herwegh-Biographie wieder übernimmt, das war die Frage, die sich dem Verfasser dieses Aufsatzes stellte. Daraufhin vorgenommene Recherchen führten zu gedruckten, inzwischen digitalisierten, bisher übersehenen Materialien zur Legion. Diese sind in den für das juristische Tagesgeschäft gedachten "Annalen der Großherzoglich Badischen Gerichte" zu finden. Es handelt sich um die breit unterfütterten Anklageschriften "wegen Hochverraths" gegen Adelbert von Bornstedt (1807-1851), den zentralen Aktivisten der Pariser Legion, und gegen Joseph Fickler (1808-1865), umtriebiger Demokrat und Redakteur der radikalen "Seeblätter" in Konstanz. In den Anklageschriften sind zwei konspirative Briefe - von Herwegh und Bornstedt an Fickler sowie dessen Antwort darauf - zur Planung einer republikanischen Erhebung von besonderem Interesse, und Briefe von Georg und Emma Herwegh vom Abend des Gefechts bei Dossenbach geben Einblicke in das Geschehen und verdeutlichen die Stimmung nach dem Kampf und gelungener Flucht. Während die Briefe zwischen Herwegh/Bornstedt und Fickler zur Aktions-Strategie aus dem Gerichtsverfahren heraus eine gewisse öffentliche Wahrnehmung fanden, blieben die stark von Emotionen und subjektiven Einschätzungen geprägten Briefe von Georg und Emma Herwegh unbeachtet. "Eine detaillierte Untersuchung zur Geschichte der Deutschen demokratischen Legion, die vorhandenes Aktenmaterial umfassend auswertet, existiert nicht."     Im deutschsprachigen Raum ist anschlussfähige Forschung an die international und interdisziplinär ausgelegten 'Energy Humanities' noch unterrepräsentiert. Im folgenden Beitrag werden zunächst das Forschungsfeld, seine Herkunft und Zielperspektiven aufgeschlüsselt. Energie und Energienutzung werden als Teil menschlicher Kultur verstanden. Um aufzuzeigen, wie sich literarische Analysen in den Gesamtkontext der 'Energy Humanities' einfügen, exemplifiziert der Beitrag drei Lektüren von Jane Austens "Emma" (1816), Émile Zolas "Germinal" (1885) und Erik Neutschs "Spur der Steine" (1964). Alle drei Texte erfordern einen individuellen energie-kritischen Fokus, durch den die ihnen eigenen Energiesysteme hervortreten können. Komparatistisch gelesen zeigen sie den Facettenreichtum energie-kritischer literarischer Studien auf: Energienutzung als Statussymbol, Rohstoffextraktion als Kontamination des Menschen, industrielle Energieproduktion als Staatsminiatur.
