Philological practices have served to secure and transmit textual sources for centuries. However - this volume contends -, it is only in the light of the current radical media change labeled 'digital turn' that the material and technological prerequisites of the theory and practice of philology become fully visible. The seventeen studies by scholars from the universities of Budapest and Cologne assembled here investigate these recent transformations of our techniques of writing and reading by critically examining core approaches to the history and epistemology of the humanities. Drawing on selective stylized facts, the paper evaluates the growth-effects for African countries and the disruptive potentials resulting from the COVD-19 pandemic, as African countries are involved in intra-regional integration processes. As AfCFTA involving 55 countries (ratified by 22 countries) is an ambitious project for industrialization for achieving SDG targets of inclusive development via trade facilitation, and regional integration, the paper argues that given the Covid-19 setback full potential depends on trade-led spillover benefits and structural factors. Our objective is to show that: given the low labor-productivity growth in the African nations-without reinventing the wheel by estimating the impact of preferential access trade agreement--the ricochet effect of the trade-induced productivity benefits via intermediates in the presence of COVID-19-led trade disruptions is crucial. The study highlights the role of trade-growth-structural factors for providing basis to simulate scenarios of technology-imports contents in a global non-linear CGE model, viz., Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) with 27 sectors and 51 regions. The paper shows: (i) role of trade-mediated productivity benefits for facilitating regional supply chain, (ii) factors underlying absorption of such benefits for economic transformation; (iii) how trade and technology could boost trade not just trade-liberalization per se; (iv) given the region's weaker production basis, in the presence of Covid-19, how the risks posed by trade plus non-trade external shocks to African intra-regional integration matter. Findings also indicate that technological benefits due to trade liberalization under FTA may be hindered by non-trade factors like epidemic or pandemic resulting in skill deficiencies, and translating into productivity slowdown. The paper empirically shows that for realizing the enormous potential of AfCFTA as driver of industrialization deep policy reforms in the areas of technology, absorptive capacity, institutions, and infra- and info-structure for digitization are necessary for long-term development. Also, the result proves that: for effectiveness of AfCFTA to deliver benefits to poor countries via allocative efficiency and welfare, apart from improving the 'behind-the-border' factors, trade with not only emerging economies like China, but also with industrialized nations is important. Also, the research shows the necessity of formulating policies to develop targeted sectors for reaping substantial benefits via AfCFTA. Thus, AfCFTA is not a panacea for industrial development.

The corporate environment is always characterized by a high degree of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. These aspects influence Human Resource Management (HRM) just like other areas of the company. In the context of decision problems, especially in HRM, it is not always possible to specify all the considered variables precisely. A suitable instrument to deal with such fuzzy conditions is Fuzzy Logic (FL). This paper aims to give insights into this field and its possible applications in HRM. For this purpose, selected theoretical foundations from the areas of HRM, FL and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are presented first. Based on this, situations in HRM are shown in which it can be useful to include FL in decision calculations. These concern e.g. problems of personnel allocation or considerations on the segmentation of labor forces. The paper is aimed at both practitioners and scholars.

Technological advancement and digitization have become more and more important in recent years. This is particularly true for credit institutions. The core banking systems used for internal processes are therefore subject to increasing digital change. In many banks, outdated IT systems are still in use, which often lack the basic functionalities that are essential for innovations. In order to achieve a sufficient functionality of the information technology in the company, core banking systems are implemented, which achieve the mapping of almost all bank-specific processes. In addition, so-called software robots are used to automate standard processes with increasing frequency. Due to the lack of standard products in previous years, there is an abundance of in-house developments. While self-developed systems dominate in the European as well as North and South American markets, earlier in-house developments in the German-speaking countries have mainly been replaced by standardized core banking systems. The introduction of standard ERP systems poses a major challenge for financial institutions. Not only does the implementation effort in terms of financial resources and working time play an important role, but also the ongoing expenses for maintenance and further development. These investments not only secure and promote the ability to innovate in the age of digitization, but also create an asset in the company. The evaluation for the accounting representation is an increasing challenge due to the steadily increasing complexity of information processing technologies. Questions arise regarding the access assessment, the follow-up assessment and the handling of previous systems. In the following, accounting according to the international accounting standards for the implementation of the ERP system SAP S/4HANA in credit institutions is shown. The procedure and the results are not limited to banks, but can be applied analogously to many industries.

Mit Beiträgen von Alina Alexenko | Alexander Bull | Eren Dogan | Andreas Ebner | Manuela Ender | Tim Alexander Herberger | Hannah Jäger | Michael Kuttner | Konstantin Lübbe | Anna Luginger | Christine Mitter | Jörg Müller | Martina Sageder | David Schroff-Spiering | Marcel Tyrell | Moritz Wehking | Stefan Wendt | Konrad Wimmer Digital transformation and sustainability have become central topics in research and academic discussion in the financial sector and have found their way into finance literature. However, it is surprising that these topics have only been linked to the content of financial risk management in a rudimentary manner and that its cross-sectional function needs to be represented more in the discussion. This anthology, therefore, addresses the opportunities and risks arising from these two topics with a strong application focus on financial risk management. Furthermore, the book considers both digital transformation and sustainability within a broad definitional framework, thus lending it a broad scope and different perspectives. With contributions by Alina Alexenko | Alexander Bull | Eren Dogan | Andreas Ebner | Manuela Ender | Tim Alexander Herberger | Hannah Jäger | Michael Kuttner | Konstantin Lübbe | Anna Luginger | Christine Mitter | Jörg Müller | Martina Sageder | David Schroff-Spiering | Marcel Tyrell | Moritz Wehking | Stefan Wendt | Konrad Wimmer

From Aristotle to Ricardo and Menger, economists have emphasised the function of money as a medium of exchange together with the intrinsic qualities that increase its saleability and credibility as a most liquid store of value. But the social institution of money co-evolves with technology. It is significant that the advent of digital cryptocurrencies was initiated by computer scientists and has taken economists completely by surprise. As a consequence, it also forces our profession to rethink the basic phenomenology of money. In accordance with the views of Wieser and Schumpeter, digitization brings to the fore its immaterial function as a standard of value and social technology of account, which increasingly absorbs that of a medium of exchange. The potential impact on economic policy is huge. The variety of different crypto coins has proven the technical feasibility of competing private currencies as proposed by Hayek. In the long term, however, there is reason to doubt the persistence of intense competition. One must fear that major digital platforms will extend their current dominance in multisided virtual market places to include digital payments and money. Central banks are increasingly anxious to preserve public sovereignty over the common unit of account and consider issuing their own digital fiat money. After the current era of intense creative experimentation, the potentially new spontaneous order of private crypto-currencies is likely to be supplanted by central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), the design of which will depend on deliberate public choices and policies.

Access to identification cards (IDs) is often required to claim government benefits. However, it is unclear which policies to increase ID ownership are more effective. We experimentally analyze the effect of two policy interventions to induce the timely renewal of identification cards on access to a government social program in Panama. Sending reminders about expiration dates increased the probability of on-time renewals and of accessing benefits from a social program by 12 and 4.3 percentage points, respectively, relative to a control group. In contrast, allowing individuals to renew their ID online only increased renewals and access to benefits by 8 and 2.9 percentage points, respectively. This result was driven by lower-income individuals. The results suggest that policies to increase ownership of valid identity documentation can reduce inclusion errors in government programs and that simply granting access to digital tools may not be enough to unlock important effects.

The global COVID-19 pandemic does not only focus on health and social issues, but the topic of digitalization as well. Universities have to (re)act very fast and demonstrate their adaptability: Within shortest time, the university life was reduced to a minimum. Simultaneously, the courses were transferred into digital formats. The following questions were surveyed by this questionnaire at the Chemnitz University of Technology between mid-July and the end of September 2020: How was this transformation done, by which advantages and disadvantages were they accompanied, how sustainable are these processes and how the future of higher education can look like. The survey addressed both university staff and students. Approximately 370 complete responses were analysed qualitatively and with the help of descriptive statistics. The results show a high degree of diversity in terms of behaviours and responses to pandemic digital teaching and learning. Digital teaching and working as well as learning from home offer multiple benefits and at the same time challenges - as does learning and working at the university campus. On the one hand, working and learning from home is perceived as enriching and overwhelming on the other - and this does not only differ from person to person, but also simultaneously within an individual. The flexibility associated with digital teaching is appreciated - at the same time, digital teaching is linked with a great deal of self-organization and few social contacts, which is perceived by some students as excessive demands. There are striking gaps in knowledge and action when it comes to linking sustainability and digitization. The results also reveal aspects for the further development of digital teaching.

This essay examines complexities that attend digitizing a cultural heritage artifact that is sacred to a contemporary community. It argues that scholars must first determine how the artifact participates in the life of its community. If this participation is integral, scholars should treat the artifact as a present-day cultural phenomenon, inseparable from its community. To explain the implications of this shift, the author turns to ethnography, which has a lengthy tradition of interacting with communities for generating research. Photographing a sacred artifact is not unlike other ethnographic research, whether tape recording stories, collecting documents, or gathering information about social practices. To guide digital work, the essay proposes ethnographic ethical principles, demonstrating their value in digitizing the 8th-century St Chad Gospels at Lichfield Cathedral, England—supporting Jamie Bianco's recent call for an "ethical turn" in the digital humanities.

Digitalization is defined as the reformulation of business models by industrializing low value-added processes. The product or service thus digitized is delivered using a platform-type digital artefact or computer code in order to disintermediate a traditional business model and thus gain in performance. Digitization is helping to transform the uses of users. Digitalization leads to a deep organizational transformation, which takes place on two levels : technological on the one hand, evoking the capacity for transformation and digital maturity, and organizational on the other hand, referring to the strategic and operational aspects of the transformation.Digitization first appeared with the advent of Web 2.0. The shift from e-commerce in the early 2000s to e-Business characterized the digital transformation of traditional business models. This results in an important demand on the part of entrepreneurs for tools and prescriptions in order to be supported in this transformation. The posture of the entrepreneur and the concept of business model are therefore central in this thesis to analyze the methods of creation and capture of value such as those associated with digital platforms. The general problem can therefore be formulated as follows : « How does the entrepreneur digitize his business model ? ».Digitization is a doubly complex phenomenon, articulating challenges in terms of information systems and change management. The thesis contributes to the literature on digitalization and business models by developing a transformation model called Dynamic Digital Business Model (BMD²). It also endeavors to contribute, in managerial terms, to propose an operational support methodology, easily actionable in the field: the DSIFAT (Discovery, Awareness, Integration, Training, Support, Transformation). Thus supported, the entrepreneur can lead the transformation of his Business Model with method and success.

Until now, digitization and sustainability have stood side by side in the discussion of business law. As leading discourses of the present-day business scene, both topics are leading to profound change in companies and are influencing each other in the process - a circumstance that can no longer be ignored by corporate management. The article shows the guiding ideas behind both discussions, as well as their convergences and interactions, and asks about the effects they have on management's duty to act.

The number of promising technology startups has increased worldwide, yet few outside the US manage to scale. What accounts for these international scaling disparities? This dissertation assesses the role of entrepreneurial and gatekeeper decisions in these scaling differences. From the perspective of entrepreneurs, the first chapter assesses the role of strategy, finding that strategy matters more in institutional contexts where mistakes are more costly, though it is harder to develop there because entrepreneurs learn from prior mistakes. The second chapter illuminates how such differences in entrepreneurial decisions may emerge from locally-embedded knowledge, showing how geographic exposure shapes entrepreneurs’ core experimentation and strategy. From the perspective of gatekeepers, the third chapter finds that judges in accelerator competitions discount startups foreign to them, driven not by a local information advantage, but rather by pure preference. The last chapter explores the role of open-source platforms—another type of gatekeeper for startups to access technical knowledge and coordination. It finds that such platforms increase entry into entrepreneurship overall, but more so for startups already in highly-endowed contexts, suggesting that the platform’s design decisions may contribute to entrepreneurial growth differences. Together, these papers reveal how decision-making interacts with institutional contexts to shape the growth trajectories of startups around the world.

; Newspapers and print media constitute an essential, but often underutilized medium for exploring transatlantic exchange. With increasing numbers of titles digitized, newspapers are now accessible to scholars in unprecedented ways. In light of new online tools and advances in research surrounding the German press, this entry looks at how newspapers were interwoven with key macrotrends of transatlanticism during the Weimar Republic and examines select case studies to reveal the medium’s value for historical, cultural, and literary analysis.
