    Enigma in Rus and Medieval Slavic Cultures is a thematic essay volume to investigate the history and function of enigma in Orthodox Slavic cultures with a special focus on the cultural history of Rus and Muscovy. Its seventeen case studies across disciplinary boundaries analyze Slavic biblical and patristic translations, liturgical commentaries, occult divinatory texts, and dream interpretations. Slavic riddles inscribed on walls and compilations of riddles in question-and-answer format are all subjects of this volume. Not only written, but also pictorial enigmas are examined, together with their relationships to texts suggesting novel methodologies for their deciphering. This kaleidoscopic survey of Enigma in Rus and Medieval Slavic Cultures by an international group of scholars demonstrates the historiographical challenges that medieval enigmatic thought poses for researchers and offers new approaches to the interpretation of medieval sources, both verbal and visual

    Dan Browns 2003 publizierter Bestsellerroman The Da Vinci Code erregte in den Medien einiges Aufsehen und löste eine heftige Kontroverse aus. Letztere war vorwiegend durch den Umstand bedingt, dass einige Romanfiguren in Dan Browns Text die These vertreten, Jesus und Maria Magdalena seien ein Liebespaar gewesen, die von Seiten konservativer Christen ungeachtet der fiktionalen Qualität des Werks als blasphemisch empfunden wurde. Ron Howards Verfilmung von Dan Browns Roman The Da Vinci Code hat die ambivalente Popularität des Buchs und die öffentliche Diskussion sicher noch gesteigert und von der Präsenz des Autors und Textes in der Presse und der Öffentlichkeit profitiert.

    In der autobiographisch geprägten Erzählung La poubelle agréée behandelt Italo Calvino eine Thematik, die zunächst eher ungewöhnlich erscheint, obwohl sie ein Grundpfeiler der modernen Gesellschaft und Bestandteil alltäglicher Handlungen ist. Es geht um Müll und dessen Entsorgungsmechanismen. In dieser Arbeit soll herauskristallisiert werden, dass Müll dechiffriert werden kann und ein Ausgangspunkt für verschiede Verweis- und Zuschreibungsmuster innerhalb einer Gesellschaft ist. Zunächst muss dementsprechend die Wahrnehmung des Mülls thematisiert und eine definitorische Eingrenzung des Bereichs vollzogen werden. Dabei soll das Augenmerk auch auf die Information, im Sinne einer Bedeutungsebene oder -offerte, gelegt werden, da Müll, der meist als amorphe Masse wahrgenommen und als nutzlos angesehen wird, aus dieser herausgelöst werden muss, um sich als ein Träger von eben diesen Informationen zu konstituieren. In diesem Zusammenhang stellt sich auch die Frage nach dem Wert eines eigentlich abgesonderten und verbrauchten Gegenstandes, von dem man sich getrennt hat, und danach, ob dieser rückführend wieder auf das kulturelle System verweist und es somit auch verändert. Zu diesem Zweck muss untersucht werden, ob Müll nicht nur als ein Knotenpunkt eines gesellschaftlichen Systems gesehen werden kann, an dem sich bestimmte soziale Konstellationen feststellen lassen, sondern sich innerhalb eines Systems auch zyklische Muster innerhalb eines ökonomischen Prozesses bilden. Neben den gesellschaftlichen und ökonomischen Aspekten gilt es zu überlegen, inwiefern Müll auch für das Individuum von Bedeutung ist. Da Müll immer mit einer Selektion einhergeht, wird zugleich eine Trennung zwischen Substanz und Rest vollzogen. Im Kontext dieser Selektionsmechanismen wird die Frage nach identitätsstiftenden Handlungen und Prozessen evident, wodurch sich definitorische Verweise auf ein Subjekt herleiten lassen.
