At the turn of the twentieth century, novelists faced an unprecedented crisis of scale. While exponential increases in industrial production, resource extraction, and technological complexity accelerated daily life, growing concerns about deep time, evolution, globalization, and extinction destabilised scale's value as a measure of reality. Here, Aaron Rosenberg examines how four novelists moved radically beyond novelistic realism, repurposing the genres-romance, melodrama, gothic, and epic-it had ostensibly superseded. He demonstrates how H. G. Wells, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and Virginia Woolf engaged with climatic and ecological crises that persist today, requiring us to navigate multiple temporal and spatial scales simultaneously. The volume shows that problems of scale constrain our responses to crisis by shaping the linguistic, aesthetic, and narrative structures through which we imagine it. "Literary works play a crucial role in modelling and conceptualising temporalities. This becomes particularly apparent in times of crises, which put conventionalised temporal patterns and routines under pressure. During crises, past, present, and future appear to collapse into each other and give way to temporal disjunction and rupture. Offering pluralised and context-sensitives approaches to temporalities in and of crises, this volume explores how literature's engagement with crises suggests both the need for and possibility of rethinking 'time'. The volume is committed to exploring the affordances of specific genres and their potential in pointing beyond temporalities of crises to facilitate a sense of futurity. Individual essays are grounded in recent theories of temporality and literary form, which are related to novel advancements in ecocriticism, queer studies, affect theory, and postcolonial studies. The chapters cover a broad range of examples from different literary genres to reveal the knowledge of literature about temporalities in and of crises"--...

"What is the role of the author in times of crisis? Modernist Crisis and the Pedagogy of Form examines how Virginia Woolf, Samuel R. Delany, and J. M. Coetzee developed literary strategies in common to cope with crisis periods they were anticipating, living through, or looking back on. Matthew Cheney outlines how the three writers shaped their art to create an author/audience relationship congruent with the goals of critical pedagogy espoused by such thinkers as Paulo Freire and bell hooks. Seeking to stimulate ethical thought, Woolf, Delany, and Coetzee required their readers to be active interpreters of their texts' forms, contents, and contexts. By pushing against fiction's fictionality, these writers of very different backgrounds, geographies, privileges, situations, tastes, and styles discovered complex ways to address the world wars in England, the AIDS crisis in New York, and apartheid in South Africa, going so far as to question the value of fiction itself."

Dysfunction can be regarded as part and parcel of a portrayal of a landscape of trauma and crisis that may have been traditionally repressed in Ireland at large. However, dysfunction also envisages mediation, managing, transcending and healing. As such, this volume examines how Ireland tackles dysfunction at large, but more importantly, how mediation, managing, healing and transcending help in the understan

'Panic' and 'mourning' are two pivotal constructs that often emerge and interplay under circumstances of conflict, violence, crisis, and catastrophe, both natural and man-made. Whereas panic tends to crop up during the experience of violent events, mourning, on the other hand, relates to the aftermath of a brutal disruption and to the way humans try to make sense of it retrospectively. Conversely, violent events can leave a thread of panic in their aftermath, while mourning can be unsettled, interrupted or even refuelled by another catastrophic incident. Contemporary African American writing negotiates the twinned crises of anthropogenic climate change and anti-Black violence by thinking in new ways about scaleUses Black Studies and African American literature to intervene in humanistic accounts of the epoch we now know as the AnthropoceneA comprehensive overview of the myriad ways in which scale has been taken up in contemporary literary criticism, the environmental humanities, and Black StudiesBrings together public policy and literature to argue for the causal role that literature plays in shaping a more sustainable and equitable future The history of the contemporary is a history of crisis – most centrally, the twinned crises of environmental destruction and anti-Black violence. Transscalar Critique argues that contemporary Black literature navigates this crisis by taking a transscalar approach, understanding crisis as working on multiple scales simultaneously, from the molecular to the geological, from the economic to the aesthetic. As a consequence, this book proposes transscalar critique as a mode of literary criticism. Organized around specific crises and authors, Transscalar Critique argues that crisis offers a window into how competing analytical, artistic, and planetary frameworks collide. In a moment of crisis, questions of race, geology, politics, epistemology, and ontology are brought into focus in surprising and unexpected ways and Transscalar Critique uses the literary, critical, and public policy responses to these events to reveal connections between the human and nonhuman worlds

Wordsworth, Hemans, and Politics, 1800-1830: Romantic Crises is a study of the political lives of William Wordsworth and Felicia Hemans between 1800 and 1830. Tracing trajectories from the first decade of the nineteenth century to the meeting of the two authors in 1830, Wordsworth, Hemans, and Politics argues that the dominant paradigm for their political thought was that of "crisis" and presents revisionary readings of major works.

Plots of War: Modern Narratives of Conflictdiscusses the dynamics of change and transformation thatunderlie the troubled project of modernity and shows how deeply it has been shaped by war and violence. The narrative of war, theemplotment of violence in historic and mainly in symbolic terms, is deeply embedded in the construction of individual and collective memories, but it also helps to shape the mediation of future conflicts. What is ultimately at stake here is the complex figuration and mediation of the violence of war in ever more hyper-mediated ways with direct consequences to the production of identities and processes of cultural memory. Isabel Capeloa Gil and Adriana Martins, Universidade Catolica Portuguesa, Lisbon, Portugal.

By pushing against fiction's fictionality, these writers of very different backgrounds, geographies, privileges, situations, tastes, and styles discovered complex ways to address the world wars in England, the AIDS crisis in New York, and apartheid in South Africa, going so far as to question the value of fiction itself"-- Cover; Contents; Acknowledgments; Note on Punctuation and Editions Cited; Abbreviations; 1 Introduction; 2 Here and Now: The Years; 3 Into Crisis: "The Tale of Plagues and Carnivals"; 4 Improper Arts: The Mad Man; 5 Away from Crisis: Elizabeth Costello, Diary of a Bad Year, Summertime; 6 Conclusion; References; Index.
