Though frequently ignored by the music mainstream, queer and transgender country and Americana artists have made essential contributions as musicians, performers, songwriters, and producers. 'Queer Country' blends ethnographic research with analysis and history to provide an i-depth study of these artists and their work. Shana Goldin-Perschbacher delves into the careers of well-known lesbian artists like k.d. lang and Amy Ray and examines the unlikely success of singer-songwriter Patrick Haggerty, who found fame forty years after releasing the first out gay country album. She also focuses on later figures like nonbinary transgender musician Rae Spoon and renowned drag queen country artist Trixie Mattel; and on recent breakthrough artists like Orville Peck, Amythyst Kiah, and chart-topping Grammy-winning phenomenon Lil Nas X.

""Listening to the Beat of the Bomb"" UPK author Charles Wolfe discusses his work and his new book Country Music Goes to War in the NEW YORK TIMES. While Toby Keith suggests that Americans should unite in support of the president, the Dixie Chicks assert their right to criticize the current administration and its military pursuits. Country songs about war are nearly as old as the genre itself, and the first gold record in country music went to the 1942 war song ""There's a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere"" by Elton Britt. The essays in Country Music Goes to War demonstrate that country m...

"Country music is often said to be "three chords and the truth." But the country music industry and related musical genres have not been particularly friendly to queer or trans musicians. Queer country musicians have developed a strategy of sincerity to engage critically with the postmodern deconstruction of essentialism (through which queer and trans experience has been understood as liberatory but also dangerously rebellious) while continuing to desire authenticity (in which their identities are accepted as real, human, and understandable to a cisgender and straight audience). Queer Country argues that country and folk music's fraught framing of common personhood, authenticity, and otherness (concepts especially important to and actively debated among transgender and queer people) are appealing in order to create stories of self, yet they simultaneously invite critique of tradition. Queer Country identifies a meaningful development in modern queer and transgender life and contemporary vernacular music, using ethnography, musical analysis, and historical methods to understand its contributions to changing notions of gender, genre, and tradition"--

Dies kann wiederum dazu führen, dass patriotisches und konservatives Gedankengut angeregt wird. eng: American country band Alabama is the most successful band in the history of country music. The band has sold over 46 million albums and has had over 40 number one singles. During the 1980s, the band released 18 music videos, all of which are still available and popular on YouTube. Country music lyrics as well as videos often refer to aspects of the American South, especially the Old South, and Alabamas lyrics and videos are no exception. These aspects include working-class people and their jobs in farming, cotton, textile and steel mills. Through cinematic analysis of country band Alabamas music videos “High Cotton”, “Dixieland Delight”, “Forty Hour Week (For A Livin)” and “Song of the South” in terms of their representation of Southern work culture, traditions and values, it becomes clear that these music videos strongly promote a nostalgic image of the American Souths white blue-collar working class society, their humble lifestyles, strong work ethic, and traditional values. These values include the importance of agriculture and family. The creation of a nostalgic image of the American South in the music videos is achieved by combining positively connotated aspects of Southern history and society while utilizing cinematic properties such as continuity editing and other narrative techniques often considered unusual for music videos. In order to successfully support these findings, this paper also discusses the American Souths location as well as culture and provides an overview of the Souths political, social and economic history. The nostalgic picture of the American South that is communicated in the music videos triggers strong emotional reactions among viewers, as visible through comments left on the videos on YoutTube, and may fuel patriotic and conservative ideologies among contemporary viewers.
