Focusing on case studies in the aesthetic practices of Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Omer Fast, Forensic Architecture, and Paul McCarthy this book proposes to redefine trauma as a productive framework to exploring individual, collective, and cultural conflicts addressed in current artistic and curatorial practices. It considers the aesthetic realm as a potential forum that provides methods of understanding the humanitarian consequences of violence and warfare, and to reveal the effects of trauma on visual culture, collective memory, and politics

Dieser für Forschung und Lehre zu Architektur und Raum gleichermaßen relevanten Fragestellung widmet sich Susanne Henning, indem sie Synergieeffekten zwischen dem Erleben gebauter Umwelt und ästhetischen Erfahrungsmöglichkeiten in skulpturalen Handlungsprozessen nachgeht. Ausgehend von skulpturalen Entgrenzungstendenzen in den Raum und in die Betrachtung sowie unter Bezugnahme auf philosophische, kulturwissenschaftliche und kunstpädagogische Diskurse erschließt sie Möglichkeiten, um Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Subjekt, Architektur und Gesellschaft zu erkunden.

    Im Kontext aktueller Debatten um Nationalismus und Migration gewinnt das in der brasilianischen Moderne entwickelte Konzept der Antropofagia zunehmend an Bedeutung, da es ein hybrides Kunstverständnis theoretisiert, das hegemonial geprägte Dichotomien überwindet. Anhand ausgewählter Werkanalysen von Ricardo Basbaum, Anna Maria Maiolino, Cildo Meireles, Ernesto Neto und Adriana Varejao weist Irina Hiebert Grun die bedeutende Beeinflussung der kulturellen Antropofagia auf die zeitgenössische brasilianische Kunst erstmals systematisch nach. Damit liefert sie einen wichtigen Beitrag zum gegenwärtigen Diskurs in Wissenschaft und Museumspraxis, der ein Aufbrechen des westlichen Kanons und die Einnahme einer globalen Perspektive fordert.

    Das Humboldt Lab Dahlem (2012-2015) gilt als die »Probebühne« des Berliner Humboldt Forums. Transdisziplinäre Teams entwickelten hier innovative Präsentations- und Vermittlungsmodelle für ethnografische Sammlungen. Zeitgleich begann ein großer Szenografie-Dienstleister mit der Gestaltung der Museumsflächen als erlebnisorientierter Themenpark. Daraus erwachsen Fragen zur mehrdeutigen Rolle des Lab im Gestaltungsprozess des Humboldt Forums und der Einbeziehung zeitgenössischer Kunst. Johanna Di Blasi beleuchtet Folgen der wenig beachteten Tatsache, dass historisch belastete Sammlungen und ihre wissenschaftlichen Kurator_innen von zwei Seiten unter Druck geraten sind: durch postkoloniale Revisionen und durch den Machtzuwachs der Szenografie.

    30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, we live in a time of globalization and free trade. Nevertheless, 70 new border walls have been built in this period - put together, they would cover the total circumference of the Earth. While governments offer manifold justifications for building these separation barriers, they invariably attract the attention of artists. Is it merely the lure of transgression, however, that attracts them - or is there a deeper significance in the artistic encounter with border walls? And which artistic strategies do these artists employ to approach them?In order to address these questions, Élisa Ganivet revisits the history of border wall aesthetics and compares more recent border-related works by 100 artists, including Joseph Beuys (Berlin), Banksy (Israel-Palestine), and Frida Kahlo (Mexico-US). Through art and thus beyond art, we understand the flaws and shortcomings of supposedly well-oiled systems.With a preface by Élisabeth Vallet.

Mit dem Überführen des Sterbens aus dem privaträumlichen Wohnumfeld in medizinische und pflegerische Institutionen wird ihre Gestaltung und Verortung im Kontext der gebauten Lebenswelt und im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs daher zur Architekturaufgabe. Katharina Voigt dokumentiert die typologische Genese von Sterbeorten, führt zeitgenössische künstlerische Positionen zur Körperlichkeit, Transformation und Räumlichkeit des Sterbens an und entwickelt daraus Grundlagen für ein angemessenes Raumgeben am Lebensende. In Gesprächen über das Sterben kommen Protagonist_innen unterschiedlicher Disziplinen zu Wort, darunter Barbara Camilla Tucholski, Charlotte Uzarewicz, Gerald Advincula und Stefan Kaegi.

    Digitale Codes bleiben in der Regel der Wahrnehmung entzogen, doch in Installationen der zeitgenössischen Kunst ist der Status zwischen immateriellem Code und sichtbarer Erscheinung künstlerisch reflektiert und ikonisch gewandelt. Die Studie zeigt dies entlang eines Dreischritts: Die Theorie des Codes legt zunächst die Begriffsgeschichte des Codes dar und verleiht einem facettenreichen Begriff Kontur, indem sie dessen Verwendung in verschiedenen Forschungsdisziplinen systematisch analysiert. Die sodann entwickelte Ästhetik des Codes denkt Code, Bild und Erscheinung zusammen, legt den Fokus auf wahrnehmungsästhetische Fragestellungen und das transformative Potenzial des Codes. Im Zentrum einer Aisthesis des Codes stehen schließlich zeitgenössische Installationen, die sich durch generative Codierungsprozesse und codereflexive Verfahren auszeichnen. Detaillierte Analysen der installativen Arrangements zeigen auf, wie Code und Erscheinung in ein oszillierendes Wechselspiel versetzt werden.

    Newsreel cinema and television not only served as an important tool in the shaping of political spheres and the construction of national and cultural identities up to the 1960s. Today's potent televisual forms were furthermore developed in and strongly influenced by newsreels, and much of the archived newsreel footage is repeatedly used to both illustrate and re-stage past events and their significance. This book addresses newsreel cinema and television as a medium serving the formation of cultural identities in a variety of national contexts after 1945, its role in forming audiovisual narratives of a »biopic of the nation«, and the technical, aesthetical, and political challenges of archiving and restaging cinematic and televisual newsreel.

    In looking at contemporary Iranian video art, this book examines artistic presentations of the self and the (de)construction of identity. Künstlerische Selbstinszenierungen in der zeitgenössischen iranischen Videokunst sind nicht zuletzt durch Identitätskonstruktionen im sowohl inner- als auch außeriranischen visuellen Diskurs geprägt. Im Zentrum dieses Buches stehen Arbeiten von Simin Keramati und Shahram Entekhabi, die in eine breit angelegte kunst- und kulturwissenschaftliche Analyse des Identitätsbegriffs in Iran des 20. und 21. (Re-)Kontextualisieren ist dabei mit Wiederholen im Sinne eines nochmals Hervorbringens, eines Wi(e)derlesens gleichzusetzen. Daniel Berndt zeigt, welche unterschiedlichen Perspektiven die Künstler_innen im Zuge dieser Wiederholung auf die Fotografie entwickeln. In Hinblick auf ihre daran geknüpften Auseinandersetzungen mit der Geschichte Palästinas und dem Nahostkonflikt geht er zudem der Frage nach, inwiefern die Künstler_innen damit einen Beitrag zu geschichtsbildenden und identitätsstiftenden Prozessen leisten. Daniel Berndt zeigt, welche unterschiedlichen Perspektiven die Künstler_innen im Zuge dieser Wiederholung auf die Fotografie entwickeln. Mit dem Überführen des Sterbens aus dem privaträumlichen Wohnumfeld in medizinische und pflegerische Institutionen wird ihre Gestaltung und Verortung im Kontext der gebauten Lebenswelt und im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs daher zur Architekturaufgabe. Katharina Voigt dokumentiert die typologische Genese von Sterbeorten, führt zeitgenössische künstlerische Positionen zur Körperlichkeit, Transformation und Räumlichkeit des Sterbens an und entwickelt daraus Grundlagen für ein angemessenes Raumgeben am Lebensende. In Gesprächen über das Sterben kommen Protagonist*innen unterschiedlicher Disziplinen zu Wort, darunter Barbara Camilla Tucholski, Charlotte Uzarewicz, Gerald Advincula und Stefan Kaegi Biographical note: Katharina Voigt, geb. 1988, ist als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Entwerfen und Gestalten der Technischen Universität München tätig. Sie studierte Architektur in Hamburg, München und Stockholm. Ihre Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Wechselwirkung von sensomotorischer Wahrnehmung und leiblichem Raumerleben. Ausgehend von der Forschung zur körperbasierten Architekturerfahrung im Zustand körperlicher Versehrtheit und im Sterben, erarbeitet sie im Rahmen ihres Promotionsvorhabens Positionen zum vertiefenden Verständnis des dynamischen Moments architektonischer Räume und ihres Aktivierungspotenzials

Focusing on case studies in the aesthetic practices of Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Omer Fast, Forensic Architecture, and Paul McCarthy this book proposes to redefine trauma as a productive framework to exploring individual, collective, and cultural conflicts addressed in current artistic and curatorial practices. Anna-Lena Werner considers the aesthetic realm as a potential forum that provides methods of understanding the humanitarian consequences of violence and warfare, and to reveal the effects of trauma on visual culture, collective memory, and politics Biographical note: Anna-Lena Werner, born in 1985, is a researcher and curator of contemporary art and performance. She received her PhD from Freie Universität Berlin in 2019, where she is currently research associate at the Institute for Theatre Studies. She worked as a research associate for inter-institutional projects with Hamburger Bahnhof-Museum für Gegenwart-Berlin, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin.
