Die Computerspieleentwicklung steht wie kaum eine andere Branche in Europa für kreative Wissensarbeit unter z. T. riskanten Beschäftigungsbedingungen. Die weltweiten Zahlen des Computerspielemarktes deuten darauf hin, dass wir es mit einer wachsenden Branche zu tun haben, deren Bedeutung in europäischen Volkswirtschaften eher zu- als abnehmen wird. Für drei Länder wird das Zusammenspiel von makro-institutionellen und branchenspezifischen Bedingungen sowie den Arbeits- und Beschäftigungssystemen auf der Unternehmensebene untersucht. Auf der Mikroebene wird ein Schwergewicht auf die Interessenvertretung, die Flexibilität von Arbeit und Beschäftigung sowie die Rolle der Ausbildung und Qualifizierung gelegt. Auf der makroinstitutionellen Ebene konzentriert sich die Studie auf das System der Arbeitsregulierung sowie das Ausbildungs- und das Finanzsystem. Die Verfasserin forscht und lehrt im Bereich komparativer Institutionenanalyse sowie globaler Wertschöpfungsketten. Along with only a small handful of European industries, video game development typifies creative knowledge work under high-risk employment conditions. Data on the global video game market indicate that the industry is expanding worldwide and will only continue to gain in relevance for European economies in the future. In this context, the author of this study analyses the interaction between macro-institutional and industry-specific conditions as well as work and employment systems at company level in three countries. At the micro-level, the author focuses on interest representation, employment flexibility and the role of worker qualifications and skills. At the macro-institutional level, she focuses on analysing labour regulation as well as on educational and financial systems. The author, Christina Teipen, conducts research and teaches in the areas of comparative institutional analysis and global value chains.

The authors trace how the realities of war are represented in popular entertainment. In the early days of the video game industry personnel and expertise flowed from contractors building military simulations to game companies; in a middle period the military drew significantly on the booming game industry to train troops; now in our cultural present media corporations and the military draw upon one another cyclically to predict the future of warfare. The book argues that commercial video wargame franchises commodified and marketed the weapons, tactics, and threat scenarios of the Pentagon's War on Terror. Many of the best-selling video games (and television and films) of the last five years depict small special forces units that can deploy at a moment's notice anywhere in the world against non-traditional enemies. This intermediation of media forms within the military-entertainment complex has shaped the popular imaginary of war in the post 9/11 era and has naturalized the Pentagon's vision of a new American way of warfare."--

This paper analyses and lays the ground for the development of an employer brand that is designed to help a Berlin-based business incubator to attract and retain tech talent. The company case exemplifies which elements are necessary to develop an employer brand and how distinguishing characteristics of an employer brand may look like. It gets clear that an one-size-fits-all approach is not effective. Diese Studie analysiert und konzipiert die Entwicklung einer Arbeitgebermarke als Instrument zur Rekrutierung und Bindung von Softwareentwicklern für einen Berliner Inkubator in der Online- und Mobile-Gaming Branche. Die Studie macht anhand eines Praxisfalls deutlich, welche Elemente benötigt werden, um zu einer Arbeitgebermarke zu gelangen, wie diese Elemente evidenzbasiert entwickelt werden können und welche differenzierenden Kernelemente eine Arbeitgebermarke umfassen kann. Es wird deutlich, dass eine One-size-fits-all Lösung nicht zielführend wäre.

Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die subjektive Wahrnehmung von Beschäftigung jenseits der klassischen Normalarbeit. Das Untersuchungsfeld ist mit der Gamesbranche ein Teil der Kreativwirtschaft, in welcher neue und ausdifferenzierte Beschäftigungsformen bereits die Regel sind. Diese atypischen Beschäftigungsverhältnisse werden jedoch nicht per se als prekär wahrgenommen, sondern sind für einige Kreative sogar der Grund für die Arbeit in diesem Bereich. Während die stärkere Marktabhängigkeit für sie kein Problem darstellt, erleben die Beschäftigten der Gamesbranche dennoch, dass die Arbeit an Spielen etwas anderes ist als die professionelle und bezahlte Ausübung eines Hobbys. Fabian Hoose ist Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Allgemeine Soziologie, Arbeit und Wirtschaft an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Seine Schwerpunkte liegen im Bereich der Arbeits- und Wirtschaftssoziologie, insbesondere den Veränderungen von Beschäftigungsformen und dem Wandel von Wirtschaftssektoren.
