This book is the first comprehensive study on Moses Mendelssohn's (1729-1786) language philosophy. While guiding the reader through the German and Hebrew sections of the oeuvre, a new perspective is gained that brings Mendelssohn closer to the skeptical currents of Enlightenment. The dialectics of human and sacred language play a constitutive role for his language theory as well as for his aesthetics and metaphysics, and finally lead into the political idea of a just, social order. Thus, he developed an important alternative to monolingual, national language concepts. Grit Schorch, Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg.

Rethinking Sinclair and Coulthard’s sequentiality-based notion of the follow-up, this volume explores its forms and communicative functions in traditional and contemporary modes of communication (parliamentary sessions, interviews, debates, speeches, op-eds, discussion forums and Twitter) wherein political actors address challenges to their political agenda and to their political face. In so doing, the volume achieves two major advances. First, its contributions expand the understanding of follow-ups beyond the traditional focus on structural sequentiality, considering communicative function as a defining feature of a follow-up. Second, it broadens the understanding of what constitutes political discourse, as not being limited to a single discourse, but also being able to span multiple discourses of different forms and speech events over time.

Chapter 1: Presidential Rhetoric and US Foreign Policy -- Chapter 2: Presidential Powers and National Emergencies -- Chapter 3: Presidential Rhetoric and National Emergencies -- Chapter 4: Sanction Rhetoric and Sanction Activities -- Chapter 5: Tough Talk in US Foreign Policy. This book examines how presidents utilize their emergency powers, as well as factors that influence presidential rhetoric in U.S. foreign policy and declarations of national emergencies. Although scholars have examined presidential rhetoric and the influence it has on various policy arenas, this project is the first to take a text analytic approach to assess the nature of presidential rhetoric in the area of U.S. foreign policy and declarations of national emergencies. Broadly, Ouyang and Morgan seek to understand (1) how presidents exercise their authority to declare national emergencies and (2) how presidential rhetoric associated with each declaration of national emergencies changes over time. They begin by providing an overview of the development of presidential emergency powers. Then, they analyze the nature of presidential rhetoric in the context of U.S. foreign policy and national emergencies. Finally, they assess the strategic use of rhetoric in national emergency declarations and evaluate how this influences the implementation of economic sanctions stemming from these policies. In addressing these questions, this book helps to advance our understanding of U.S. foreign policy generally, national emergencies specifically, as well as the impact of presidential rhetoric on the policy selection and execution. Yu Ouyang is Associate Professor of Political Science at Purdue University Northwest, USA. He received his undergraduate degree from Valdosta State University and his PhD from the University of Kentucky. His research on U.S. executive politics and quantitative methods has appeared in Congress & the Presidency, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Public Administration Review, and Social Science Quarterly. His recent book examines Donald Trump’s use of Twitter: Trump, Twitter, and the American Democracy: Political Communication in the Digital Age. Michael A. Morgan is Associate Professor of Political Science at Marietta College, USA. He received his undergraduate degree from Marietta College and his MA and PhD from the University of Kentucky. His research focuses primarily on American foreign policy and international security. He has had work published in Presidential Studies Quarterly and Contemporary Cases in U.S. Foreign Policy.

Chapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: Populist Melancholy -- Chapter 3: Voltagabbana Rhetorics. Salvini Unmasked: Turncoating as a Populist Strategy in Pandemic Times -- Chapter 4: Populist Rhetoric and Digital Communication: The Case of Brexit -- Chapter 5: Populism and the Rise of the AfD in Germany -- Chapter 6: The Rhetorical Strategy of Moralisation: A Lesson from Greece -- Chapter 7: Victorious Victimization. Viktor Orbán the Orator: Deep Securitization in Hungary’s Propaganda State -- Chapter 8: The Voice and Message of Hugo Chávez: A Rhetorical Analysis -- Chapter 9: Afterword: Afterword: A Definition Sought and Tested -- Index. . This book proposes a unified approach to populism that sees it as a primarily rhetorical concept. Populism is on the rise worldwide with both populist leaders and movements gaining power, and the term “populism” resounds in political debate, journalism, and scholarship. Populism as a phenomenon seems to instantiate perennial issues besetting rhetoric (e.g., the charges of manipulation, exclusive reliance on opinion over knowledge, and abuse of emotional appeals), yet relatively little research on populism has emerged from the discipline of rhetoric. This volume investigates the theory and practice of populism under the heading of rhetoric but as an interdisciplinary effort involving scholars in rhetoric as well as neighbouring disciplines such as political science and sociology. Seven case studies covering Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, UK, USA, and Venezuela offer conceptual discussions as well as close analyses applying both historical and theoretical approaches. In the introduction, the editors outline the problem of populism and their project, presenting the book’s wide-spanning case-based explorations. In an afterword they seek to distil a “minimal” rhetorical definition of populism. The claim or pretense to speak for “the people” emerges as the feature that connects the highly diverse instances studied in the book—and populisms in general, the editors hypothesize. They argue that this prevalent rhetorical move, often glossed over as unremarkable and banal, is in principle more debatable and deserving of more vigilant scrutiny than usually assumed. Christian Kock is Emeritus Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He has published in Philosophy and Rhetoric, Argumentation, Political Communication, Rhetorica, Rhetorica Scandinavica, Paradigmi, Informal Logic, Controversia and many other journals and has authored and edited several books in Danish and English on political rhetoric, argumentation, and public debate, most recently his Deliberative Rhetoric: Arguing about Doing (2017). Lisa Villadsen is Professor and Head of the Section of Rhetoric at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. She has published in Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Quarterly Journal of Speech, Javnost, Rhetorica Scandinavica, and other journals on official apologies, political rhetoric, dissent, and populism, most recently “Low Style the High Way: Rhetorical Mainstreaming of Populism” in the edited volume Vox Populi: Populism as a Rhetorical and Democratic Challenge (2020).

This open access book is the product of three years of academic research that has been carried out in the EU-funded Jean Monnet Network on “Post-Truth Politics, Nationalism and the Delegitimation of European Integration” since 2019. Drawing on the multidisciplinary expertise of the network’s members, the book explores the impact of the phenomenon of post-truth politics on European integration and the European Union. It places particular emphasis on how post-truth politics has played out in the public sphere and asks what impact the phenomenon has had on public deliberation, but reflects also on its implications for democracy in a wider sense. This book is primarily written for audiences with an interest in politics and policy making, including academics, policy makers and civil-society actors. Thanks to its accessible style, the book should however also be an asset to wider audiences.
