    Explores the how, why, and what of contemporary Chicanx culture, including punk rock, literary fiction, photography, mass graves, and digital and experimental installation artRacial Immanence attempts to unravel a Gordian knot at the center of the study of race and discourse: it seeks to loosen the constraints that the politics of racial representation put on interpretive methods and on our understanding of race itself. Marissa K. López argues that reading Chicanx literary and cultural texts primarily for the ways they represent Chicanxness only reinscribes the very racial logic that such texts ostensibly set out to undo.Racial Immanence proposes to read differently; instead of focusing on representation, it asks what Chicanx texts do, what they produce in the world, and specifically how they produce access to the ineffable but material experience of race. Intrigued by the attention to disease, disability, abjection, and sense experience that she sees increasing in Chicanx visual, literary, and performing arts in the late-twentieth century, López explores how and why artists use the body in contemporary Chicanx cultural production. Racial Immanence takes up works by writers like Dagoberto Gilb, Cecile Pineda, and Gil Cuadros, the photographers Ken Gonzales Day and Stefan Ruiz, and the band Piñata Protest to argue that the body offers a unique site for pushing back against identity politics. In so doing, the book challenges theoretical conversations around affect and the post-human and asks what it means to truly consider people of color as writersand artists. Moving beyond abjection, López models Chicanx cultural production as a way of fostering networks of connection that deepen our attachments to the material world

Darüber hinaus erweisen sie sich als wertvolle mentalitätsgeschichtliche Dokumente ihrer Autor_innen. Hans-Jakob Zimmer unternimmt die bislang umfangreichste Auswertung deutschsprachiger Reiseberichte im Hinblick auf das Musikleben des Landes Brasilien, welches nach der Umsiedlung des portugiesischen Königshofs nach Rio de Janeiro im Jahr 1808 zu einem Sehnsuchtsort für Naturforscher, Reisende und Auswanderer avancierte.

    This volume explores the bodies that are subjects and objects of violence; bodies that, by simply being, narrate their traumatic experience. Contributors attune to the dialogic and hybrid relations that connect bodies and environments, and to the horizons of imaginative, future-worldbuilding possibilities that they open through acts of transmission, translation, and transfer. Refracting to something other than the body’s own physicality – to multiple (multidirectional) networks – the chapters in this volume map and weave an ecosystem of interlacing bodies that are human, animal, vegetal, natural and technological; that are both singular and collective (i.e. a social body); that are situated in both the physical and virtual space; that are mythological and ephemeral; and that express naturecultural entanglements.

    The studies presented in this volume examine the intertwining of corporeality and temporality in Brazilian literature from interdisciplinary perspectives. In some narratives, the texts make explicit the protagonism of the illness itself and the ambivalent relationship that is built up between sick or aging people and their former selves. In this context, different ways of excluding bodies that are no longer young or 'healthy' and are kept out of the public sphere are problematized. Silence and loneliness, but also the urgency of living to tell, are often the driving forces behind the narratives and poems studied.

    The Brazilian Constitution provides a remarkable set of social rights, including the right to housing. Despite this fact, struggles for decent living conditions have become key issues in the daily urban lives of many people in Brazil. Contesting the differentiated access to housing, social movements occupy empty buildings in the cities to challenge historically-rooted and excluding urban politics. Exploring the occupants' agency, Bea Wittger draws attention to the important role of female actors within the buildings. Through oral histories of participants of two squats in Rio de Janeiro, the book delivers a deep insight "from below" into their own perspectives on citizenship and gender.

    The Brazilian Constitution provides a remarkable set of social rights, including the right to housing. Despite this fact, struggles for decent living conditions have become key issues in the daily urban lives of many people in Brazil. Contesting the differentiated access to housing, social movements occupy empty buildings in the cities to challenge historically-rooted and excluding urban politics. Exploring the occupants' agency, Bea Wittger draws attention to the important role of female actors within the buildings. Through oral histories of participants of two squats in Rio de Janeiro, the book delivers a deep insight "from below" into their own perspectives on citizenship and gender

    Explores the how, why, and what of contemporary Chicanx culture, including punk rock, literary fiction, photography, mass graves, and digital and experimental installation artRacial Immanence attempts to unravel a Gordian knot at the center of the study of race and discourse: it seeks to loosen the constraints that the politics of racial representation put on interpretive methods and on our understanding of race itself. Marissa K. López argues that reading Chicanx literary and cultural texts primarily for the ways they represent Chicanxness only reinscribes the very racial logic that such texts ostensibly set out to undo.Racial Immanence proposes to read differently; instead of focusing on representation, it asks what Chicanx texts do, what they produce in the world, and specifically how they produce access to the ineffable but material experience of race. Intrigued by the attention to disease, disability, abjection, and sense experience that she sees increasing in Chicanx visual, literary, and performing arts in the late-twentieth century, López explores how and why artists use the body in contemporary Chicanx cultural production. Racial Immanence takes up works by writers like Dagoberto Gilb, Cecile Pineda, and Gil Cuadros, the photographers Ken Gonzales Day and Stefan Ruiz, and the band Piñata Protest to argue that the body offers a unique site for pushing back against identity politics. In so doing, the book challenges theoretical conversations around affect and the post-human and asks what it means to truly consider people of color as writersand artists. Moving beyond abjection, López models Chicanx cultural production as a way of fostering networks of connection that deepen our attachments to the material world

    Le Brésil littéraire: histoire de la littérature brésilienne (1863), die erste Literaturgeschichte Brasiliens, ist das letzte große Werk des Wiener Romanisten Ferdinand Wolf. Das Buch wurde auf Deutsch verfasst, erschien jedoch nur in französischer Übersetzung. Anhand von bis jetzt unveröffentlichten Materialien, wie den zentralen Passagen des nie gedruckten Manuskripts Geschichte der brasilischen Nationalliteratur und ihrer Transkription, enthüllt Laura Rivas Gagliardi Wolfs literaturpolitisches Projekt hinsichtlich der Vorherrschaft des ‹deutschen Geistes› und der Habsburger Monarchie in der Welt – Brasilien miteinbezogen. Wolfs Geschichtsauffassung, welche die neokolonialen Ziele der Habsburger-Monarchie durch Sprache und Denken des Deutschen Idealismus legitimiert, wird durch den Vergleich mit der Übersetzung offengelegt. Die Autorin zeigt, dass Le Brésil littéraire im Zeichen der ideologischen Ansprüche einer transnationalen Elite entstand, die auf dynastischen Bündnissen basierte: Die (Literatur-)Geschichtsschreibung wird hier als Werkzeug eingesetzt, um eine Vergangenheit zu konstruieren und die Gegenwart zu steuern.     The Brazilian Constitution provides a remarkable set of social rights, including the right to housing. Despite this fact, struggles for decent living conditions have become key issues in the daily urban lives of many people in Brazil. Contesting the differentiated access to housing, social movements occupy empty buildings in the cities to challenge historically-rooted and excluding urban politics. Exploring the occupants' agency, Bea Wittger draws attention to the important role of female actors within the buildings. Through oral histories of participants of two squats in Rio de Janeiro, the book delivers a deep insight "from below" into their own perspectives on citizenship and gender

In elf Aufführungsanalysen zeigt sie die gesamte Bandbreite der Themen und Vermittlungsstrategien - vom dramatisch präsentierten Stadtsanierungsprojekt bis hin zur postdramatischen Verhandlung illegaler Migration.
