    "Le bilinguisme a longtemps été considéré comme une entrave au développement des enfants. Encore aujourd'hui, bien des parents et des professionnels pensent qu'apprendre à parler, à lire et à écrire dans deux langues peut aboutir à des difficultés scolaires. Ce double apprentissage entraine une surcharge cognitive et des risques de confusions liés à la manipulation des deux codes. En contexte multilingue, toutes les langues ne jouissent pas toujours d'un même prestige aux yeux de la population. Certaines sont dépréciées : il serait donc « inutile » de les enseigner à l'école. Cet ouvrage s'appuie sur les résultats de la recherche internationale et sur des travaux menés en France et ailleurs. Il traite du développement bilingue et de l'impact de dispositifs pédagogiques qui valorisent les langues d'origine. Une notion centrale justifiant ­l'intérêt d'utiliser plusieurs langues est abordée : les effets de transferts interlangues."
