An engaging and accessible introduction to the writings and intellectual development of the Venerable Bede (d.735), this book (originally published in 1970) is available again for the enjoyment of all those interested in the early medieval world. With an updated preface and supplementary bibliography by Michael Lapidge, the book is based almost entirely on primary sources, particularly Bede's own writings. The book surveys the fragmented state of Britain after the Anglo-Saxon conquests, tracing the - sometimes faltering - rebirth of Christianity from the time of St. Augustine through to the glories of the golden age of Northumbria in the eighth century. What was Bede's contribution to the growth of scholarship? Why is his famous Ecclesiastical History of the English Church and People still so highly regarded? How did Bede see his own age? What traditions most influenced him? Peter Hunter Blair answers all these questions, assessing Bede sympatheticaly in all the fields in which he was active, as teacher, orthographer, moral philospher, grammarian, theologian, natural scientist and, above all, as our first modern historian. Part One: Alter orbis -- Change in the West -- Bede's view of Britain -- Britons and English -- English foundations -- Part Two: Towards Christianity -- The initiation of a mission -- The journey to England -- Gregory's correspondence -- Bede's account of the mission -- The first Archbishops of Canterbury -- Paulinus in Northumbria -- 'Celtic' and 'Roman' missionaries -- Part Three: The growth of monasticism -- Gaulish and Italian influences -- Spanish influences -- Aspects of English monasticism -- Benedict Biscop's early years -- The foundation of Wearmouth -- The foundation of Jarrow -- The Abbacy of Ceolfrith -- Part Four: Learning, teaching and writing -- The regular life -- The Bible in the West -- The Northumbrian Bible -- Education and the Grammarians -- Reading and Psalmody -- Number and time -- The lives of saints -- Secular and Christian books -- Candela Ecclesiae

As the major writer and thinker of the Anglo-Saxon period, the Venerable Bede is a key figure in the study of the literature and thought of this time. This Companion, written by an international team of specialists, is a key introductory guide to Bede, his writings, and his world. The first part of the volume focuses on Bede's cultural and intellectual milieu, covering his life, the secular-political contexts of his day, the foundations of the Latin learning he inherited and sought to perpetuate, the ecclesiastical and monastic setting of early Northumbria, and the foundation of his home institution, Wearmouth-Jarrow. The book then considers Bede's writing in detail, treating his educational, exegetical and historical works. Concluding with a detailed assessment of Bede's influence and reception from the time of his death up to the modern age, the Companion enables the reader to view Bede's writings within a wider cultural context. Part 1. Bede's life and context. Bede's life in context / Michelle P. Brown -- Secular and political contexts / James Campbell -- The world of Latin learning / Rosalind Love -- Church and monastery in Bede's Northumbria / Sarah Foot -- British and Irish contexts / Clare Stancliffe -- The foundation of Bede's Wearmouth-Jarrow / Ian Wood -- Pt. 2. Bede's writings. Bede and education / Calvin B. Kendall -- Bede and science / Faith Wallis -- Bede and the Old Testament / Scott DeGregorio -- Bede and the New Testament / Arthur G. Holder -- Bede and preaching / Lawrence T. Martin -- Bede and history / Alan Thacker -- Pt. 3. Reception and influence. The cult of Bede / David Rollason -- Bede and the continent in the Carolingian age and beyond / Joshua A. Westgard -- Bede and later Anglo-Saxon England / Sharon M. Rowley -- The Englishness of Bede, from then to now / Allen J. Frantzen
