    Abstract: Life Is Elsewhere is a reflective introspection into the life of a young poet and of his demanding mother. Kindera depicts the mother as a woman feeling unworthy of love who relishes the fantasy of being Jaromil's ethereal mother in order to escape from her actual bodily deprivation and resolve her psychological tensions. On the other hand, Jaromil's portrait as a young poet involves his consonant, in Lacan’s terms, imaginary and symbolic identifications which lead him to an unending alienation in the context of a socialist system. Reading the novel in the light of Bakhtin's ideas on parody and its polyphonic nature illuminates Kundera's parodic treatment of motherhood, poetic, political and historical discourses, and especially his use of parody as a political means to oppose the domineering voice of totalitarianism. However, by giving parody an ontological status, Kundera considers it as the inevitable destiny of a human being who has forgotten his authentic "being" and ignored a

    Recent scholarship on Lamentations has focused on the voice of Daughter Zion in chs. 1-2. Interpreters argue that the frank protests constitute an antitheodicy and have placed these poems in opposition to the voice of the man in Lamentations 3, specifically 3.21-42. This section utilizes Deuteronomistic and Wisdom material to offer a theodicy, counseling penitent acceptance of God's righteous judgment. This article nuances previous analyses of Lam. 3.21-42, arguing in particular that vv. 33-39 subtly manipulate the expected theodic solution until Yahweh's culpability as oppressive agent is denied rather than justified. It is argued that the poet glimpses a ‘secular' theodicy. This is accomplished through close exegesis of Lam. 3.21-42, and by utilizing Mikhail Bakhtin's concepts of ‘dialogism' and ‘double-voicing'.

    Die Beschreibung der Gottesbeziehung Israels als Bund hat in der deuteronomisch-deuteronomistischen, der priesterlichen und der prophetischen Überlieferung des Alten Testaments drei je eigenständige Ausprägungen erfahren. Joachim J. Krause nimmt diese unter besonderer Berücksichtigung ihrer jeweiligen konditionalen Struktur in den Blick. Dabei erweist sich die gängige, binär kodierte Frage nach 'konditionierten' versus 'unkonditionierten' Konzeptionen als unzureichend. Sämtliche im Alten Testament belegten Konzeptionen sind je auf ihre Weise konditional strukturiert. Ferner zeigt sich, dass die Israel betreffende Bedingung in keinem der Fälle auf die Gabe des Bundes, sondern durchweg auf dessen Bewahrung bezogen ist. Es geht nicht um den Eintritt in den Bund, sondern um das Bleiben in ihm. So markant sich die drei großen bundestheologischen Konzeptionen inhaltlich unterscheiden, so wesensverwandt sind sie in diesem einen, theologisch entscheidenden Grundsatz. Modelled on human contracts, in particular political treaties, the theological notion of YHWH's covenant describes Israel's relationship with its God as one designed with deliberation. In light of this, Joachim J. Krause enquires into the conditional structure of the various concepts of covenant in the Hebrew Bible.
