"In Globalization and the Poor Periphery before 1950 Jeffrey Williamson examines globalization through the lens of both the economist and the historian, analyzing its economic impact on industrially lagging poor countries in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Williamson argues that industrialization in the core countries of northwest Europe and their overseas settlements, combined with a worldwide revolution in transportation, created an antiglobal backlash in the periphery, the poorer countries of eastern and southern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Latin America."--Jacket Acknowledgments; 1 Laws of Motion: Secular Boom and Bust in the Premodern Periphery; I Impact on Prices, Trade, and Distribution; 2 Core Growth and World Transport Revolutions; 3 World Market Integration and the Periphery Terms of Trade; 4 Relative Factor Price Convergence, Absolute Factor Price Divergence, and Income Distribution; II Impact on Economic Development and Policy; 5 The Dark Side: Deindustrialization and Underdevelopment; 6 Terms-of-Trade Impact: Secular Trend and Volatility; 7 Bucking the Global Tide with High Tariffs; 8 Coda: Some Guarded Lessons from History; Notes; References.

"This book argues that increasing engagement between international institutions and sectors of civil society is producing a new form of global governance. The authors investigate 'complex multilateralism' by studying the relationship between three multilateral economic institutions (the IMF, World Bank, and World Trade Organization), and three global social movements (environmental, labour, and women's movements). They provide a comparative analysis of the institutional response to social movement pressure, tracing institutional change, policy modification and social movement tactics as they struggle to influence the rules and practices governing trade, finance and development regimes."--Jacket

"This book offers a compelling new interpretation of the proliferation of regional trade agreements (RTAs) at the end of the twentieth century. Challenging the widespread assumption that RTAs should be seen as fundamentally similar economic initiatives to pursue free trade, Francesco Duina proposes that the world is reorganizing itself into regions that are highly distinctive and enduring. With evidence from Europe, North America, and South America, he challenges our understanding of globalization, the nature of markets, and the spread of neoliberalism. The pursuit of free trade is a profoundly social process and, as such, a unique endeavor wherever it takes place. In an unprecedented comparative analysis, the book offers striking evidence of differences in the legal architectures erected to standardize the worldview of market participants and the reaction of key societal organizations--interest groups, businesses, and national administrations--to a broader marketplace. The author gives special attention to developments in three key areas of economic life: women in the workplace, the dairy industry, and labor rights. With its bold and original approach and its impressive range of data, The Social Construction of Free Trade represents a major advance in the growing fields of economic sociology and comparative regional integration." -- Book cover

This report examines the effectiveness of Africa's regional economic communities in pushing forward the regional integration agenda towards the objectives of the Abuja Treaty establishing the African Economic Community. A fully functioning African Economic Community would remove all barriers to movement of people, goods and services across the continent, thereby creating a single economic space. The report examines the critical role that institutions in general can play in achieving policy objectives, and the specific role that African institutions perform. The analysis focuses on the regional economic communities, which have been designated by the African Union as the building blocks for achieving the African Economic Community.--Publisher's description

The economy of the Mediterranean region countries - which in the present study include Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, as well as Israel and Turkey - experienced a period of strong and dynamic economic development in the late 1970s and early 1980s. But since the 1980s these economies have experienced a much less dynamic evolution and tended toward stagnation. This paper by Oleh Havrylyshyn, presents an assessment of the experience of these economies in a framework of a broad trade strategy perspective for Mediterranean countries, and examines prospects for the future

Japan has a growing presence throughout the Asian region, and Walter Hatch and Kozo Yamamura find that many standard Japanese business practices have been transplanted. Central to this argument is the concept of cooperation between industry and government, labor and management, and even independent firms belonging to the same keiretsu (enterprise group). This cooperation allows a complex web of quasi-integrated vertical production networks to develop. The book shows that such strategic control of technology is a unique model of globalization. The authors recommend ways in which damaging 'trade wars' between Japan and the West can be avoided, making this book essential reading for businesspeople, policymakers, academics, and students
