    Although most modern scholars doubt the historicity of King Arthur, parts of the legend were accepted as fact throughout the Middle Ages. Medieval accounts of the historical Arthur, however, present a very different king from the romances that are widely studied today. Richard Moll examines a wide variety of historical texts including Thomas Gray's Scalacronica and John Hardyng's Chronicle to explore the relationship between the Arthurian chronicles and the romances. He demonstrates how competing and conflicting traditions interacted with one another, and how writers and readers of Arthurian texts negotiated a complex textual tradition. Moll asserts that the enormous variety and number of existing chronicles demonstrates the immense popularity of the historical Arthur in medieval England. Since these chronicles were the dominant source of Arthurian information for the late medieval reader, they provide an invaluable, and neglected, interpretive context for modern readers of Malory and other later medieval romances. The first monograph to look at the impact of these historical texts on Arthurian literature, Before Malory is also the first to show how canonical vernacular romances interacted with chronicle texts that have since dropped out of the canon.

    Lanzelet is an enigmatic piece of Arthurian literature. Composed soon after 1194, it is the second German Arthurian romance. It was based on a French model, now lost, which could have been part of an 'old' hardly accessible Arthurian tradition, so that Lanzelet is a key text in the early history of Arthurian romance. In addition, however, its fascinating literary facture means that a text which was long undervalued is now a central element in Arthurian research. Die vorliegende Neubearbeitung bietet eine gründliche Revision des kritischen Textes und im Anhang einen Abdruck der 1978 und 2003 gefundenen mittelhochdeutschen Erec-Fragmente, die unabhängig von der bisher bekannten vollständigen Version auf Chrétiens »Erec et Endide« zurückgehen. Hartmann von Aue's »Erec« is the first Arthurian romance in German and a central work of classical Middle High German literature. The present edition provides a thoroughly revised critical version of the text. The annex supplies a print version of the Middle High German »Erec« fragments discovered in 1978 and 2003, which independently of the familiar complete version relate back directly to Chrétien de Troyes' »Erec et Enide«.

Each section of the romance is summarized exactly, the most important intertextual references are pointed up, and each scene is located within the overall context of the text using the findings of most recent research. In addition, this introduction provides information on the author, transmission of the text, its editorial history, and the structure and most important complexes of motifs in the Wigalois. Particular emphasis is placed on the productive medieval reception of the romance and its most important representatives, with the Erfurt version discovered in 2006 being presented for the first time.     During and after the Hundred Years War, English rulers struggled with a host of dynastic difficulties, including problems of royal succession, volatile relations with their French cousins, and the consolidation of their colonial ambitions toward the areas of Wales and Scotland. Patricia Ingham brings these precarious historical positions to bear on readings of Arthurian literature in Sovereign Fantasies, a provocative work deeply engaged with postcolonial and gender theory.Ingham argues that late medieval English Arthurian romance has broad cultural ambitions, offering a fantasy of insular union as an "imagined community" of British sovereignty. The Arthurian legends offer a means to explore England's historical indebtedness to and intimacies with Celtic culture, allowing nobles to repudiate their dynastic ties to France and claim themselves heirs to an insular heritage. Yet these traditions also provided a means to critique English conquest, elaborating the problems of centralized sovereignty and the suffering produced by chivalric culture. Texts such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the Alliterative Morte Arthure, and Caxton's edition of Malory's Morte Darthur provide what she terms a "sovereign fantasy" for Britain. That is, Arthurian romance offers a cultural means to explore broad political contestations over British identity and heritage while also detailing the poignant complications and losses that belonging to such a community poses to particular regions and subjects. These contestations and complications emerge in exactly those aspects of the tales usually read as fantasy-for example, in the narratives of Arthur's losses, in the prophecies of his return, and in tales that dwell on death, exotic strangeness, uncanny magic, gender, and sexuality.Ingham's study suggests the nuances of the insular identity that is emphasized in this body of literature. This compendium is the first work to provide a complete and methodologically reflected documentation of the maxims and sayings in medieval German Arthurian romances. A differentiated listing collects the maxims, reflects their narrative context, gives a semantic explanation via a paraphrase, locates them in the aphoristic network of the relevant text by pointing to parallel passages, and, using citations from the Bible and medieval literature in Latin and the vernacular(s), locates them in the relevant tradition of their usage.

Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, fr. 12576 (T), but is moderately interventionist in its attempt to approximate more closely to the ipsissima verba of Chrétien; the critical text is accompanied by complete variants from the other manuscripts. The critical apparatus includes full descriptions of all the manuscripts of "Perceval", an examination of the manuscript transmission of the text, and of the language of the scribe of T and of Chrétien; the notes contain a running commentary on the manuscript tradition and a justification of every emendation made to the text of T. The edition concludes with a full glossary.

    Der vorliegende zweite Band bildet den Abschluß der Neuedition der »Krone« Heinrichs von dem Türlin, die die alte, häufig als unzulänglich bezeichnete Edition von G. F. H. Scholl (1852) ersetzt. Die auf Handschriftennähe bedachten Editionsrichtlinien von Band 1 (Altdeutsche Textbibliothek 112) werden beibehalten, der einzige größere Unterschied besteht im überlieferungsbedingten Wechsel der Leithandschrift von der Wiener Hs. V zur Heidelberger Hs. P. Ergänzt wird die Edition durch eine umfassende Einleitung (Editionsrichtlinien, Handschriftenbeschreibungen, Sprachanalysen) und durch ein Namenregister zum gesamten Text. This second volume completes the new edition of Heinrich von dem Türlin's »Krone«. It supplants the old edition by G.F.H. Scholl (1852), which has frequently been criticized as inadequate. The editing guidelines of Volume 1 (Altdeutsche Textbibliothek 112) with their concern for proximity to the manuscript have been maintained. The only major difference is the switch in the leithandschrift from the Viennese V manuscript (which breaks off at the end of the text presented in Volume 1) to the Heidelberg P manuscript. The edition comes with an extensive introduction (discussing editing guidelines and providing descriptions of the manuscripts and linguistic analyses) and an index of names for the entire text.

    This is the first introduction in German to the Wigalois by Wirnt von Grafenberg, written around 1200. The introduction is written for the general reader, with a target readership both of students of medieval German literature and of a wider audience of those seeking an initial approach to the text. Each section of the romance is summarized exactly, the most important intertextual references are pointed up, and each scene is located within the overall context of the text using the findings of most recent research. In addition, this introduction provides information on the author, transmission of the text, its editorial history, and the structure and most important complexes of motifs in the Wigalois. Particular emphasis is placed on the productive medieval reception of the romance and its most important representatives, with the Erfurt version discovered in 2006 being presented for the first time.     Der scheinbar unspezifische und inzwischen abgegriffene Strukturbegriff ist aus der Forschung über den Artusroman in Vers und Prosa nicht wegzudenken; denn anders als in der oral verankerten Epik begreift sich der frühe Artusroman bekanntlich erstmals als individuell verantwortete, bewußt fiktionale und tendenziell autonome Struktur oder conjointure . Von Anfang an kreiste die Artusforschung daher um Formprobleme und versuchte, im Laufe ihrer Geschichte– nicht zuletzt unter dem Einfluß der jeweils herrschenden Forschungsparadigmen– narrative Modelle für die Erhellung arthurischer Strukturgesetzlichkeiten nutzbar zu machen. Das berühmteste Beispiel ist hier sicherlich die Doppelwegtheorie, die, von Wilhelm Kellermann vorweggenommen, in der Nachkriegsforschung zu einem Paradigma aufrückte und die These einer spezifischen „Artusstruktur0 (Hugo Kuhn) rechtfertigte. Der am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts erreichte Zustand der Verfügung über die einzelnen Forschungsetappen– genau ein halbes Jahrhundert nach der Gründung der Internationalen Artusgesellschaft– legte es für die Deutsche Sektion nahe, Bilanz zu ziehen und eine kritische Überprüfung früherer Ergebnisse mit dem Versuch weitergehender Ansätze zu verbinden. The apparently vague and certainly hackneyed term 'structure' has become a terminally ubiquitous 'hardly perennial' in the research on Arthurian romance in verse and prose. Unlike orally derived epic poetry, early Arthurian romance already evolved an identity as an individually under-written, authorial, consciously fictional, and - in tendency at least - autonomous structure or 'conjointure' in its own right. Thus from the outset Arthurian research revolved around problems of form and in the course of its history attempted (not least under influence of the respectively prevalent research paradigms) to develop and/or draw on narrative models for the purpose of casting light on Arthurian structural regularities. The most famous instance of this is certainly the 'dual path theory', adumbrated by Wilhelm Kellermann, developing into a paradigm in post-mar research and justifying the positing of an 'Arthurian structure' (Hugo Kuhn). Looking back at the end of the 20th century on the various separate stages of Arthurian research, and exactly 50 years after the establishment of the International Arthurian Society, the German Section of the Society felt it incumbent upon itself to essay a stock-taking retrospect and combine a critical review of earlier research findings with an attempt at new approaches taking research on this subject on into the future.

Das in der Mediävistik aktuelle Thema wird hier erstmals in konsequent gattungsgeschichtlich arthurischer sowie in vergleichender und interdisziplinärer Perspektive verfolgt. Das Spektrum reicht von konkreter und metaphorischer Körperlichkeit, Affektivität und Emotionalität über Formen des symbolischen Körpers bis zu Problemen körperhafter Identität. The volume assembles papers delivered at the conference of the German section of the International Arthurian Society in 2005, which was devoted to the problem of corporeality in the medieval and late medieval Arthurian romance. The topic has received much attention in recent medieval studies. Here it is dealt with for the first time both from a consistently genre-historical perspective and from a comparative and interdisciplinary one. The spectrum of themes addressed ranges from concrete and metaphorical corporeality, affectivity and emotionality, and symbolic body forms to problems of "corporate" identity.
