Ce volume est préfacé par Nicolas Baverez, disciple d'Aron s'il en est, qui, de manière magistrale, restitue à la pensée aronienne toute son actualité. Il comprend en outre un avant-propos fort éclairant de Tzvetan Todorov. Ce livre est le récit d'une rencontre: celle d'un siècle convulsif et d'une intelligence avide de le comprendre. C'est aussi le témoignage d'un homme qui s'interroge sur lui-même et son oeuvre, sur les êtres et sur la vie. Spectateur engagé, il a côtoyé les acteurs éminents de son temps, de De Gaulle et Kissinger à Malraux, Sartre et Camus, et brosse de chacun d'eux un portrait sans complaisance. Mais cet ouvrage dresse avant tout le bilan des réflexions d'un grand philosophe politique sur le monde moderne, en marge de l'académisme intellectuel de son époque. Les trois inédits ici rassemblés, portant l'un sur le bilan économique et social de la gauche au pouvoir, le deuxième sur le moralisme de la diplomatie américaine et le conflit israélo-arabe, le dernier sur l'hégémonie soviétique, illustrent on ne peut mieux l'indépendance d'esprit de leur auteur. À l'heure où la France et le monde ont besoin de retrouver raison, rigueur et cohérence, relire ou découvrir Raymond Aron est plus que jamais nécessaire.
