Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita, set in Stalin’s Moscow, is an intriguing work with a complex structure, wonderful comic episodes and moments of great beauty. Readers are often left tantalized but uncertain how to understand its rich meanings. To what extent is it political? Or religious? And how should we interpret the Satanic Woland? This Reader’s Companion offers readers a biographical introduction, and analyses of the structure and the main themes of the novel. More curious readers will also enjoy the accounts of the novel’s writing and publication history, alongside analyses of the work’s astonishing linguistic complexity and a review of available English translations

Sites about Persons ; au Secondary Texts ; q62 Dame Ivy Compton-Burnett (1884-1969) was an English novelist. Compton-Burnett's fiction deals with domestic situations in large households which, to all intents and purposes, invariably seem Edwardian. This website mainly focuses on the influences of a troubled life upon the novelist's writing and compares her favourably with Virginia Woolf, whom the author of this side considers inferior to Compton-Burnett. The site offers a detailed biography on Burnett's life, a list of her novels with suggestions for critical reading, Overall this website is a good starting point to introduce this lesser known novelist.

General Bibliographies ; blz6 "Henry Miller (1891-1980) was an American writer. He is particularly known for breaking with existing literary forms and developing a new sort of "novel" that is a mixture of novel, autobiography, social criticism, philosophical reflection, surrealist free association, and mysticism, one that is distinctly always about and expressive of the real-life Henry Miller and yet is also an imaginative construct. This essential online bibliography is based on the standard two-volume bibliography edited by Lawrence J. Shifreen and Roger Jackson, published in 1993-94. The site is subdivided into various categories: A -items (works by Miller), B-items (works containing contributions by Miller) and C-items (periodicals containing contributions by Miller).
