Until the early 17th century almost all portable paintings were created on wood

supports, including masterpieces by famous painters, ranging from Giotto to Dürer

to Rembrandt. The structural conservation of these paintings requires specific

knowledge and skills as the supports are susceptible to damage caused by unstable

    environmental conditions.

Unfortunately, past structural interventions often caused significant damage due

to insufficient knowledge of the behaviour of the wood panels, glue and paint

layers. Over the last fifty years, the field has developed treatment strategies based

on interdisciplinary collaboration and on the knowledge of specialist conservators.

Most current conservation protocols rely on empirical knowledge of conservators

and are not necessarily based on a scientific understanding of the nature and

behaviour of wood and paint layers.

In order to move the field forward, it is imperative to strengthen scientific research

into the production methods, ageing and future behaviour of panel paintings,

being an intricate interplay between different materials. A deeper understanding of

the processes that adversely affect panel paintings over time will contribute to the

improved care and conservation of these artworks.

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Rijksmuseum

Amsterdam brought together a group of experts from different disciplines to

recommend specific areas in the field that would benefit from systematic research.

The experts concluded that targeted interdisciplinary research projects are key to

understanding the behaviour of panel paintings and help conservators make better

informed decisions. Research into chemical and physical properties of wood, glue

and paint layers should be combined with an evaluation of past and current

conservation treatments. Research should also consider the history of the object,

studio practice, conservation history and thoughts on long-term impact of

    treatments.

COST Action IE0601 "Wood Science for Conservation of Cultural Heritage" (www.woodculther.org) aims to improve the conservation (including study, preventive conservation and restoration) of European Wooden Cultural Heritage Objects (WCHOs), by fostering targeted research and multidisciplinary interaction between Researchers in various fields of Wood Science, Conservators of wooden artworks, other Scientists from related fields. This book of Proceedings contains most of the papers presented in the International Conference held in Florence (Italy) on 8-10 November 2007, dealing with several of the Action's themes, including structure and properties of historic wood, ageing and non-biological degradation of wood material, contributions from Wood Science to conservation issues.

The hardness of stone, the pliancy of wood, the fluidity of palm oil, the crystalline nature of salt, and the vegetable qualities of moss – each describes a way of being in and understanding the world. These substances are both natural objects hailed in Romantic literature and global commodities within a system of extraction and exchange that has driven climate change, representing the paradox of the modern relation to materiality. In Common Things examines these five common substances – stone, wood, oil, salt, and moss – in the literature of Romantic period authors, excavating their cultural, ecological, and commodity histories. The book argues that the substances and their histories have shaped cultural consciousness, and that Romantic era texts formally encode this shaping. Matthew Rowney draws together processes, beings, and things, both from the Romantic period and from our current ecological moment, to re-invoke a lost heritage of cultural relations with common substances. Enabling a fresh reading of Romantic literature, In Common Things prompts a reevaluation of the simple, the everyday, and the common, in light of their contributions to our contemporary sense of ourselves and our societies "In Common Things explores the implacable agency of five common substances--stone, wood, oil, salt, and moss--in the life and literature of the Romantic period. It argues that these substances and their histories have shaped cultural consciousness, and that Romantic era texts formally encode this shaping. Substance is both the natural object of Romantic literature and the commodity that has driven global climate change, and represents the paradox of the modern relation to materiality. In Common Things excavates the cultural, ecological and commodity histories of these substances, demonstrating qualities they share "in common" with literary form. What this book hopes to prompt in its readers is a reevaluation of the simple, the everyday, and the common in light of its contribution to our contemporary sense of ourselves and our societies."--

Deforestation is considered a highly undesirable practice due to the destruction of local biomes and its effects on global warming. Governments around the world are seeking to adopt measures to control this activity and the international trade in wood and derivatives. Brazil, with the second largest area of forest in the world, also has an arsenal of measures aimed at combating illegal deforestation and the export of these products. However, considering the period 2010 to 2020, it led the international ranking of average net loss of forest areas. The beef and soy export sectors were linked to deforestation in conservation areas and the target of international criticism of the production of commodities. In part, this is expressed in the increase in non-tariff measures issued by the US and the European Union regarding beef and soy. However, it is expected that this concern is also present for wood consumption. It is important that all countries establish strict control over deforestation, and strive in the same direction, regardless of the type of imported product.
