This volume addresses the dynamics of materiality over time and space. In cross-cultural, multi-temporal and interdisciplinary studies the authors examine how things gain meaning and status, generate a multitude of emotions, and feed into the propagation of myths, narratives and discourses. The book is divided according to four themes: soft objects, stoic stories, consuming and the collectable, and waste and technologies. The first section discusses the meanings of the lived environment on the individual and national levels. The second section provides specific examples on the role of things in identity construction. The third section focuses on historical and contemporary aspects of consumption and collecting. The phenomena under scrutiny in the fourth section are moral dilemmas associated with and representations of dirt/waste and advancements in science and technology. Presenting diverse case studies of material culture, the volume points to rich interdisciplinary approaches in cultural theory.

In this book, Peter Krieger creates a political iconography of the Anthropocene: he shows how, with the help of optical forensics, an exploration of the history of ideas and a scientific interpretation of images, it is possible to understand what prompts people to abuse wild nature as a dumping ground for rubbish. His micro-historical study of a waste-contaminated nature reserve in Mexico City exemplifies how waste has become a new geological layer of the Anthropocene. The precise analysis of this globally representative scene of an environmental crime is also the basis for the elaboration of a realistic utopia for rethinking and changing our destructive treatment of nature. "An important book, a stirring book - which horrifies and at the same time opens up perspectives for alternative action." Jürgen Goldstein

Recycling waste from used goods can substitute for scarce raw materials and reduce resource dependence. This paper presents a model of waste collection, recycling and final goods production using raw and recycled materials. Non-recycled waste must be safely stored by landfill to avoid environmental damage. The costs of waste disposal create externalities. An optimal allocation requires a trash tax to make producers pay for the costs of waste disposal, and an input subsidy to recycling firms to compensate for the savings in disposal costs. We study trade between resource poor economies exporting final goods, and resource rich countries exporting raw materials. We find rich welfare effects of trade policy with non-trivial interactions between terms of trade effects and distortions in recycling and resource extraction.
