A queer genealogy of the famous performance space and the nuyorican aesthetic One could easily overlook the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a small, unassuming performance venue on New York City’s Lower East Side. Yet the space once hosted the likes of Victor Hernández Cruz, Allen Ginsberg, and Amiri Baraka and is widely credited as the homespace for the emergent nuyorican literary and aesthetic movement of the 1990s. Founded by a group of counterculturalist Puerto Rican immigrants and artists in the 1970s, the space slowly transformed the Puerto Rican ethnic and cultural associations of the epithet “Nuyorican,” as the Cafe developed into a central hub for an artistic movement encompassing queer, trans, and diasporic performance. The Queer Nuyorican is the first queer genealogy and critical study of the historical, political, and cultural conditions under which the term “Nuyorican” shifted from a raced/ethnic identity marker to “nuyorican,” an aesthetic practice. The nuyorican aesthetic recognizes and includes queer poets and performers of color whose writing and performance build upon the politics inherent in the Cafe’s founding. Initially situated within the Cafe’s physical space and countercultural discursive history, the nuyorican aesthetic extends beyond these gendered and ethnic boundaries, broadening the ethnic marker Nuyorican to include queer, trans, and diasporic performance modalities.Hip-hop studies, alongside critical race, queer, literary, and performance theories, are used to document the interventions made by queer and trans artists of color—Miguel Piñero, Regie Cabico, Glam Slam participants, and Ellison Glenn/Black Cracker—whose works demonstrate how the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has operated as a queer space since its founding. In focusing on artists who began their careers as spoken word artists and slam poets at the Cafe, The Queer Nuyorican examines queer modes of circulation that are tethered to the increasing visibility, commodification, and normalization of spoken word, slam poetry, and hip-hop theater in the United States and abroad.

The second revised edition of ‘Aufbruch. Ein Weg in die Philosophie’ traces the inseparable connection between the adventure of philosophical thinking and the perpetually twofold nature of man. This book demonstrates that philosophising corresponds to basic human attitudes and can be a path for every person who is creatively on a journey to themselves. ‘Aufbruch’ delineates the open and inherently contentious double structure that essentially characterises human beings in vivid descriptions of phenomena. This can be demonstrated, among other things, through the attitudes of living and walking and of stumbling, tearing down and resisting.

Research has shown that commuting is related to the health of workers, and that mode choice may have differential effects on this relationship. We analyze the relationship between commuting by different modes of transport and the health status reported by US workers, using the 2014-2016 Eating and Health (EH) Module of the American Time Use Survey (ATUS). We estimate Ordinary Least Squares models on a measure of subjective health, that is the self-reported assessment of individual general health status, and on the body mass index. We find that longer commutes by bicycle are significantly related to higher levels of subjective health and to lower body mass index, while commuting by walking is weakly related to both health measures. We test the robustness of our results to possible measurement errors in commuting times, to the exclusion of compensating factors, and to the estimation method. We additionally instrument individual use of bicycles with an indicator of individual green attitudes, based on the General Social Survey (GSS), and the results consistently show that individuals who commute longer by bicycle report better subjective health and lower body mass index. Our results may help policy makers in evaluating the importance of having infrastructures that facilitate the use of bicycles as a means of transport, boosting investment in these infrastructures, especially in large cities.

One of the main goals of transportation policies is to improve the people's access to employment opportunities, public services, and amenities. For this reason, an increasing number of transportation and funding agencies have sought to incorporate accessibility studies in the planning and assessment of their transportation policies and infrastructure investments. However, there is still very limited data on urban accessibility in Brazil due to computational and methodological challenges. This study presents a comprehensive database with urban accessibility estimates created by the Access to Opportunities Project (Projeto Acesso a Oportunidades), and introduce the methods used in its development. The database consists of a spatial grid of hexagons of high spatial resolution that aggregates estimates of accessibility to jobs (low-, medium- and high-qualification) and public services, such as schools (early childhood, primary and high school), health facilities (hospital and ambulatory services of low, medium and high complexity) and reference centers for social assistance (Cras). These estimates are calculated using different accessibility indicators by transport mode (walking, cycling, public transport, and car), for different times of the day (peak and off-peak) and for different population groups according to income levels, race, gender, and age. In this edition, the database brings information for the period from 2017 to 2019 based on a single consistent methodology for the twenty largest cities in Brazil. This database is made publicly available by the Ipea through the website of the Access to Opportunities Project and through the R package aopdata. We hope this work will allow researchers and policy makers to use urban accessibility estimates to inform research as well as the planning and evaluation of public policies.
