Vulnerability is not often associated with virtue. Yet to be vulnerable is central to human experience. In this book, McCoy examines ways in which Greek epic, tragedy, and philosophy have important insights to offer about the nature of human vulnerability and how human beings might better come to terms with their own vulnerability. While studies of Greek heroism and virtue often focus on strength of character, prowess in war, or the achievement of honor for oneself or one’s society, McCoy examines another side to Greek thought that extols the recognition and proper acceptance of vulnerability. McCoy begins with the literary works of Homer’s Iliad, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, Oedipus at Colonus and Philoctetes before expanding her analysis to philosophical works. There, she analyzes imagery of wounding in Plato’s Gorgias and Symposium as well as Aristotle’s work on the vulnerability inherent in friendship and an innovative interpretation of tragic catharsis in the Poetics. As much a work of philosophy as of classical textual analysis, McCoy’s work aims at a deeper understanding of the virtues of vulnerability for individuals and societies alike.

Recent decades have brought to light the staggering ubiquity of human activity upon Earth and the startling fragility of our planet and its life systems. This is so momentous that many scientists and scholars now argue that we have left the relative climactic stability of the Holocene and have entered a new geological epoch known as the Anthropocene. This emerging epoch may prompt us not only to reconsider our understanding of Earth systems, but also to reimagine ourselves and what it means to be human. How does the Earth’s precarious state reveal our own? How does this vulnerable condition prompt new ways of thinking and being? The essays that are part of this collection consider how the transformative thinking demanded by our vulnerability inspires us to reconceive our place in the cosmos, alongside each other and, potentially, before God. Who are we “after” (the concept of) the Anthropocene? What forms of thought and structures of feeling might attend us in this state? How might we determine our values and to what do we orient our hopes? Faith, a conceptual apparatus for engaging the unseen, helps us weigh the implications of this massive, but in some ways, mysterious, force on the lives we lead; faith helps us visualize what it means to exist in this new and still emergent reality.

The doctrines of virtue elaborated by Thomas Aquinas and Meister Eckhart, which used to be prominent in medieval Europe, are often disregarded today. This is unfortunate since the thoughts of these two theologians are highly illuminating for many discussions in virtue ethics today. This book presents pivotal passages from Thomas’s and Eckhart’s works, both in their original language and in new or revised German translations. Both approaches are examined in detail, compared to each other and discussed in relation to modern perspectives by renowned experts in the field. This book will appeal to all those interested in the ethics of either Thomas Aquinas and Eckhart or in virtue ethics in general. In Part One of Immanuel Kant’s Religion within the Boundaries of Mere Reason (1793), the so-called thesis of innate evil (‘The human being is by nature evil’) notoriously plays a central role. Yet in the General Remark closing that part, Kant minimizes the weight of that thesis. In his view, it is of no use in moral dogmatics, and also in moral discipline its meaning is of a limited nature. Consequently, the thesis of innate evil is both relegated to a short footnote in the Introduction and completely passed over in silence in the Doctrine of the methods of ethics in Kant’s Metaphysical Principles of the Doctrine of Virtue (1797). This article investigates Kant’s assessment of the use of the thesis of innate evil in moral philosophy. It explores Kant’s semantics of the thesis in order to find out why the thesis makes no difference in moral philosophy, and tries to demonstrate why it is silenced furthermore in the methods of ethics.

What can Comenius contribute to the solution of problems in the Anthropocene? Uwe Voigt sees these problems as qualitative and seeks reflections in Comenius. For narratives in earth-history, Thomas Schmaus discovers impulses in the garden-motif of Comenius. Věra Schifferová, Iveta Marešová und Dalibor Vik refer to Comenius as “open soul”. Joachim Rathmann pleas for environmental virtue ethics, to be practiced in didactic gardens. The “true refinement of man” called for by Comenius (Jiří Beneš) is supported, facing the challenges of new media, by the universality and autonomy fostered by Comenius’ didactics, according to Claudia Schmidt-Dietrich. With contributions by Jiří Beneš, Claudia Schmidt-Dietrich, Iveta Marešová, Joachim Rathmann, Věra Schifferová, Thomas Schmaus, Dalibor Vik and Uwe Voigt.

This book provides a new critical edition of the Eryxias, an often neglected dialogue concerning the relationship between wealth and virtue transmitted into Plato’s corpus, but probably written in the Ancient Academy after the founder’s death. This new edition, which is founded on a complete revision of the manuscript tradition, is accompanied by an Italian translation, a complete introduction and a detailed commentary, examining the philological, literary and philosophical aspects of the text.

This book offers a complete reconstruction of the ancient and Byzantine tradition of the pseudoplatonic Eryxias, a dialogue concerning the relationship between wealth and virtue. This text is preserved in our medieval manuscripts in the Appendix of spurious dialogues, but probably found its origin in the Ancient Academy. The book contains a thorough investigation of the indirect and direct tradition of the text. The section on the Byzantine transmission improves the reconstruction of the manuscript tradition of the Appendix offered by Levi Arnold Post (1934). All known manuscripts have been newly collated, providing the necessary basis for a new critical edition of this often overlooked text.

This new approach to Malherbe's odes interweaves political, cultural, rhetorical, and literary history to show how they constitute a unified sequence whose ambition is to forge a new national community in the aftermath of the Wars of Religion, dislodging Malherbe from his moribund critical reception as a grammarian and technician and recovering the brilliance of a poetic genius whose political mythmaking stems from an impassioned patriotism

This article briefly surveys major commentaries and monographs, as well as significant articles, on the book of Proverbs. The broader genre of wisdom literature, of which Proverbs is a key component, has been undergoing intense scrutiny. The question was whether there is a wisdom genre at all and if so how should it be defined. 2011–2020 was a period of intense research during which a paradigm shift was in progress. Other issues include structure and rhetorical features, divine retribution, and theology more broadly, moral self-development, pedagogy, corporal punishment, and economic and social justice. Non-western and indigenous readings and research from a gender-sensitive perspective have continued to be significant.
