What unites and what divides Americans as a nation? Who are we, and can we strike a balance between an emphasis on our divergent ethnic origins and what we have in common? Opening with a survey of American literature through the vantage point of ethnicity, Werner Sollors examines our evolving understanding of ourselves as an Anglo-American nation to a multicultural one and the key role writing has played in that process. Challenges of Diversity contains stories of American myths of arrival (pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, slave ships at Jamestown, steerage passengers at Ellis Island), the powerful rhetoric of egalitarian promise in the Declaration of Independence and the heterogeneous ends to which it has been put, and the recurring tropes of multiculturalism over time (e pluribus unum, melting pot, cultural pluralism). Sollors suggests that although the transformation of this settler country into a polyethnic and self-consciously multicultural nation may appear as a story of great progress toward the fulfillment of egalitarian ideals, deepening economic inequality actually exacerbates the divisions among Americans today

This is an article about the role that translation can play in building up the unity of the body of Christ. It rests on two fundamental assumptions: the first that Christianity is essentially a faith which has no existence independent of its translations; the second that the proclamation of the Christian message is truest to itself when expressed in the natural idiom of a culture. In this article, I examine the arguments supporting these assumptions. These fundamental theological axes are then related to a practical analysis of the power shifts which inevitably occur when translation of the Christian message occurs, with particular reference to Baptist congregations in Wales, and the potential for disunity generated by linguistic and cultural difference. This in turn leads to a consideration of what constitutes good practice in bilingual worship. I conclude that even in seemingly monoglot congregations, the social and linguistic background of individuals means that we are operating in an essentially multilingual and multicultural environment. There are two main ways of ensuring unity in such a situation — one is to impose a cultural and linguistic hegemony, and the second is to surrender control and seek to encourage the flourishing of multiple readings of the Christian message in line with the language and cultural idioms of those present. I suggest that the second way is truer to the model of translation which God demonstrated in the incarnation.

The Christian liturgy is far more than a simple mobilization of a diverse range of artistic expressions in service of its ordinary performance; in fact, the liturgy is in essence a poiesis of the faith. Nor does this poiesis function as a system in harmony with Christian dogma and ethics, because in many regards it transcends these other two approaches. In the midst of the contemporary questioning concerning faith and life, believing and living, the centuries-old poiesis represents an invaluable resource. Truth alone cannot be imposed, nor should it be. More than ever, the symbolic translation of the faith, or to put it in other words, its aesthetic mediation, as expressed in its communitarian practice, will prove itself worthy of faith.

Studies point out that populism, a concept still in dire need of clarifications, resembles more of a rhetorical strategy than a fully-fledged ideology. Actually, populism has become a concept so frequently used that its orginial meaning seems to have been lost, leaving it as an empty shell, at least from an ideological point of view. I argue that in spite of this - or rather as a means of compensation - populism uses a very robust mythological apparatus, creating narratives that allow voters to easily understand its messages. The current article underlines that in an attempt to over-simplify its discourse, populism makes use of all four political myths identified by Raoul Girardet. The conspiracy myth represents the main element revolving around the populist discourse. Politicians who embrace this rhetoric denounce a secret society that is rigorously organized, the actions of which defy morality, using all means to attain political power. The other three political myths, i.e. the myth of unity, the myth of the savior and the myth of the golden age, act together only as a counterweight for the first. The paper also points out that the success of Euroscepticism lies in the fact that it represents the perfect embedding for such myths, and that the EU needs to generate its own narratives if it hopes to confront the so-called “populist temptation”.

The present study argues that the main content of Paul's letter to the Romans is a deliberative argument based on appeals to honor, which aimed at promoting mutual tolerance among Roman believers. Providing both a corroboration of, and a minor corrective to, Robert Jewett's monumental reading of Romans, this article reads Romans against the background of symbouleutic rhetoric, as attested in the orations of Dio Chrysostom and Aelius Aristides, and it seeks to shed light on the argumentative functions and nuances of each ‘theological' unit for the overall ?ow of the argumentation in Romans. Paul elaborates upon the particular rami?cations of his gospel most pertinent for addressing communal problems in the Roman congregations, namely, the transformative potential of the gospel to create a newly enabled moral agency through the indwelling spirit. Paul tries to cultivate an ‘analytical stance' among the Roman believers so that they could deliberate about the best course of action with regard to the Jewish law concerning food and Sabbath.

2 Cor 10-13 may be seen to hang together closely, both internally and with the rest of the canonical letter, once one notices the very careful manner in which Paul distinguishes between and handles three groups: (i) the Corinthians as such, a group that includes his ‘own people’ and sometimes also (ii) his internal critics; and (iii) the rival missionaries. The four chapters are built over a set of four motifs: 2nd or 3rd person? absence or presence? meekness or boldness? building up or tearing down? In light of this, one finds the following structure: A (10.1-11) on the i- and ii-groups; B (10.12-11.21), C (11.22-12.10), and D (12.11-13) on the iii- and i-groups; and E (12.14-13.13) on the i- and ii-groups. The four chapters - and indeed, the letter as a whole - have an inner dynamic that reaches its writerly goal in the comparison of Paul to the iii-group (C). The final, rhetorical aim, however, consists in establishing the proper relationship between Paul himself and the i-group as he is about to reach Corinth once more in the flesh.
