    In Search of Singularity introduces a new “compairative” methodology that seeks to understand how the interplay of paired texts creates meaning in new, transcultural contexts. Bringing the worlds of contemporary Polish and Chinese poetry since 1989 into conversation with one another, Joanna Krenz applies the concept of singularity to draw out resonances and intersections between these two discourses and shows how they have responded to intertwined historical and political trajectories and a new reality beyond the human. Drawing on developments such as AI poetry and ecopoetry, Krenz makes the case for a fresh approach to comparative poetry studies that takes into account new forms of poetic expression and probes into alternative grammars of understanding.

    Die Sicht Reisender aus Nordwesteuropa auf den östlichen Mittelmeerraum war um 1700 durch die Bibel und antike Quellen, die Kreuzzüge und die osmanische Herrschaft geprägt. Wie fanden diese historischen Schichten Eingang in das Bild der Region, das ihre Zeichnungen und illustrierten Berichte hervorbrachten? Reisende der Neuzeit fertigten Ansichten historischer Orte und Bauwerke im Osmanischen Reich für ein Publikum in Europa an. Diese Bilder wurden bislang meist als Quellen für die archäologische Forschung genutzt oder als Beleg für einen orientalistischen Blick gewertet. Die Studie beleuchtet sie erstmals in ihrem kulturhistorischen Kontext. Sie waren Teil eines breiten Austauschs über die Antike, für den auch der Kontakt mit lokalen Akteuren eine Rolle spielte. In drei Abschnitten zeigt das Buch auf, wie man das Reisen in die Länder der Bibel und der Antike verstand, wie man historisch bedeutende Topographien visualisierte und wie man sich Monumente und Relikte durch Zeichnen wie durch Sammeln aneignete.

    Verlagsinfo: Up until fairly recently, memory used to be mainly considered within the frames of the nation and related mechanisms of group identity. Building on mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion, this form of memory focused on the event as a central category of meaning making. Taking its cue from a number of Anglophone novels, this book examines the indeterminate traces of memories in literary texts that are not overtly concerned with memory but still latently informed by the past. More concretely, it analyzes novels that do not directly address memories and do not focus on the event as a central meaning making category. Relegating memory to the realm of the latent, that is the not-directly-graspable dimensions of a text, the novels that this book analyses withdraw from overt memory discourses and create new ways of re-membering that refigure the temporal tripartite of past, present and future and negotiate what is ‘memorable’ in the first place. Combining the analysis of the novels’ overall structure with close readings of selected passages, this book links latency as a mode of memory with the productive agency of formal literary devices that work both on the micro and macro level, activating readers to challenge their learned ways of reading for memory

    Die Sicht Reisender aus Nordwesteuropa auf den östlichen Mittelmeerraum war um 1700 durch die Bibel und antike Quellen, die Kreuzzüge und die osmanische Herrschaft geprägt. Wie fanden diese historischen Schichten Eingang in das Bild der Region, das ihre Zeichnungen und illustrierten Berichte hervorbrachten? Reisende der Neuzeit fertigten Ansichten historischer Orte und Bauwerke im Osmanischen Reich für ein Publikum in Europa an. Diese Bilder wurden bislang meist als Quellen für die archäologische Forschung genutzt oder als Beleg für einen orientalistischen Blick gewertet. Die Studie beleuchtet sie erstmals in ihrem kulturhistorischen Kontext. Sie waren Teil eines breiten Austauschs über die Antike, für den auch der Kontakt mit lokalen Akteuren eine Rolle spielte. In drei Abschnitten zeigt das Buch auf, wie man das Reisen in die Länder der Bibel und der Antike verstand, wie man historisch bedeutende Topographien visualisierte und wie man sich Monumente und Relikte durch Zeichnen wie durch Sammeln aneignete.
