    "This concise and highly accessible textbook outlines the principles and techniques of storytelling. It is intended as a high-school and college-level introduction to the central concepts of narrative theory – concepts that will aid students in developing their competence not only in analysing and interpreting short stories and novels, but also in writing them.

     

    This textbook prioritises clarity over intricacy of theory, equipping its readers with the necessary tools to embark on further study of literature, literary theory and creative writing. Building on a ‘semiotic model of narrative,’ it is structured around the key elements of narratological theory, with chapters on plot, setting, characterisation, and narration, as well as on language and theme – elements which are underrepresented in existing textbooks on narrative theory. The chapter on language constitutes essential reading for those students unfamiliar with rhetoric, while the chapter on theme draws together significant perspectives from contemporary critical theory (including feminism and postcolonialism).

     

    This textbook is engaging and easily navigable, with key concepts highlighted and clearly explained, both in the text and in a full glossary located at the end of the book. Throughout the textbook the reader is aided by diagrams, images, quotes from prominent theorists, and instructive examples from classical and popular short stories and novels (such as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Franz Kafka’s ‘The Metamorphosis,’ J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, or Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, amongst many others).

     

    Prose Fiction: An Introduction to the Semiotics of Narrative can either be incorporated as the main textbook into a wider syllabus on narrative theory and creative writing, or it can be used as a supplementary reference book for readers interested in narrative fiction. The textbook is a must-read for beginning students of narratology, especially those with no or limited prior experience in this area. It is of especial relevance to English and Humanities major students in Asia, for whom it was conceived and written.

    The journalist and critic Siegfried Kracauer is best remembered today for his investigations of film and other popular media, and for his seminal influence on Frankfurt School thinkers like Theodor Adorno. Less well known is his earlier work, which offered a seismographic reading of cultural fault lines in Weimar-era Germany, with an eye to the confrontation between religious revival and secular modernity. In this discerning study, historian Harry T. Craver reconstructs and richly contextualizes Kracauer’s early output, showing how he embodied the contradictions of modernity and identified the quasi-theological impulses underlying the cultural ferment of the 1920s

    Die Beziehung zwischen Philosophie und Literatur ist spätestens seit Platon spannungsreich. Der als Philosoph, Politik- und Literaturwissenschaftler international bekannte Autor diskutiert in einer Einführung die komplexen Facetten dieser Beziehung, verteidigt emphatisch den kognitiven Charakter der Literatur und zeigt in dreizehn Interpretationen konkret, wie eine philosophisch inspirierte Literaturwissenschaft vorgehen kann. Themen sind u.a. das Problem der Sprachmalerei in der Lyrik, Dantes Commedia, Grimmelshausens Simplicissimus, Lustpiele Holbergs, Goldonis und Büchners, Schillers Fiesco, Grillparzer, Ibsen, Raabe, Thomas Mann und le Carré. Philosophen und Literaturwissenschaftler werden gleichermaßen von dem Buch profitieren. At least since Plato, the relationship between philosophy and literature has been tense. In the introduction to this book, the author, who is internationally known as a philosopher, political scientist and literary critic, discusses the complex facets of this relationship, emphatically defending the cognitive character of literature. In thirteen interpretations, he also shows concretely how philosophically inspired literary criticism may proceed. His topics are, among others, the problem of linguistic iconism in poetry, Dante’s Commedia, Grimmelshausen’s Simplicissimus, comedies by Holberg, Goldoni and Büchner, Schiller’s Fiesco, Grillparzer, Ibsen, Raabe, Thomas Mann and le Carré. Both philosophers and literary critics will benefit from this book.

Die Einführung bietet einen Überblick über literaturtheoretische und sozialhistorische Fragen, die für das Verständnis der Satiren Juvenals zentral sind: das Verhältnis zwischen historischem Autor und textimmanentem Sprecher (persona-Theorie), die nicht mehr funktionierende Klient-Patron-Beziehung (amicitia), rollenabweichendes Verhalten von Männern und Frauen der sozialen und politischen Elite, Konzepte von Homosexualität etc. Juvenal (approx. AD 60–140) was the last important representative of Roman satire in verse. His influence on the genre has made a significant impact on our understanding of the satiric mode. The introduction provides an overview regarding questions of a literary-theoretical as well as a socio-historic nature, which are quintessential for a comprehensive reading of Juvenal’s satires: the connection between author and narrator (persona theory), the no-longer-functioning relationship between client and patron (amicitia), the behaviour of men and women of the social and political elite diverging from traditional gender roles, concepts of homosexuality etc.

Sie verbindet einen gründlichen theoriegeleiteten und problemorientierten Überblick über die wichtigsten aktuellen Methoden der Literatur-, Medien- und Kulturwissenschaft mit einer Vielzahl von Beispielen aus den skandinavischen Literaturen. Durch dieses exemplarische Vorgehen werden zum einen die Theorien und Methoden anschaulich gemacht, zum anderen werden wichtige Themen und Darstellungsformen der skandinavischen Literatur der Neuzeit präsentiert. Dabei wird auch deutlich, dass reflektiertes Lesen literarischer Texte einen privilegierten Zugang zur Kultur, Geschichte und Gesellschaft Skandinaviens eröffnet. This introductory book is intended for students of Scandinavian studies who are primarily interested in modern Scandinavian literary studies. It combines a thorough theory-based and problem-oriented overview of the most important methods currently used in literary, media and cultural studies with a variety of examples from Scandinavian literature. Through this exemplary approach, on the one hand the theories and methods are made clear, while on the other important themes and forms of representation in modernday Scandinavian literature are presented. It also becomes apparent that reflective reading of literary texts opens up privileged access to the culture, history and society of Scandinavia.
