Poets and scholars Paul Hetherington and Cassandra Atherton introduce prose poetry’s key characteristics, chart its evolution from the nineteenth century to the present, and discuss many historical and contemporary prose poems that both demonstrate their great diversity around the Anglophone world and show why they represent some of today’s most inventive writing.A prose poem looks like prose but reads like poetry: it lacks the line breaks of other poetic forms but employs poetic techniques, such as internal rhyme, repetition, and compression.     The Collected Poems of Philip Lamantia represents the lifework of the most visionary poet of the American postwar generation. Philip Lamantia (1927-2005) played a major role in shaping the poetics of both the Beat and the Surrealist movements in the United States. First mentored by the San Francisco poet Kenneth Rexroth, the teenage Lamantia also came to the attention of the French Surrealist leader André Breton, who, after reading Lamantia’s youthful work, hailed him as a "voice that rises once in a hundred years." Later, Lamantia went "on the road" with Jack Kerouac and shared the stage with Allen Ginsberg at the famous Six Gallery reading in San Francisco, where Ginsburg first read "Howl." Throughout his life, Lamantia sought to extend and renew the visionary tradition of Romanticism in a distinctly American vernacular, drawing on mystical lore and drug experience in the process. The Collected Poems gathers not only his published work but also an extensive selection of unpublished or uncollected work; the editors have also provided a biographical introduction

    Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898) is one of the giants of nineteenth-century French poetry. Leader of the Symbolist movement, he exerted a powerful influence on modern literature and thought, which can be traced in the works of Paul Valéry, W.B. Yeats, and Jacques Derrida. From his early twenties until the time of his death, Mallarmé produced poems of astonishing originality and beauty, many of which have become classics.In the Collected Poems, Henry Weinfield brings the oeuvre of this European master to life for an English-speaking audience, essentially for the first time. All the poems that the author chose to retain are here, superbly rendered by Weinfield in a translation that comes remarkably close to Mallarmé's own voice. Weinfield conveys not simply the meaning but the spirit and music of the French originals, which appear en face.Whether writing in verse or prose, or inventing an altogether new genre—as he did in the amazing "Coup de Dés"—Mallarmé was a poet of both supreme artistry and great difficulty.     An early cameo of Latin American surrealism, Rosamel del Valle's erotic narrative of ecstasy and perdition creates the rhythm of the dream and the tempo of madness. Intermittently a waiflike young woman, Eva, intrudes into the daily routine of the writer. Her appearances are marked by a circle of red and the vision of a deep well with a star hanging over it. A tone poem of surrealist encounter, pursuit, and loss, Eva y la Fuga was written in 1930 and finally published posthumously in 1970, by Monte Avila Press in Venezuela. Anna Balakian offers here the first translation of the work into any other language. She brilliantly conveys in English the author's highly metaphoric language and the immediacy of surrealist experience, signaled in the narrative by frequent lapses into a haunting present tense.On their walks through the streets of Santiago, Eva and the narrator mingle in the fiesta atmosphere of the Chilean Amusement Park, with its gigantic Ferris Wheel. Bits of real-life dialogue float through the air. But the couple move on different wavelengths from the crowd and often from each other. Passing in and out of his life, Eva exercises a hypnotic fascination over the writer and makes an equally profound impression on the reader. This narrative is in the same genre as Gerard de Nerval's Aurélia, André Breton's Nadja, and Michel Leiris's Aurora, and should be counted among the most compelling works of twentieth-century surrealist literature

    Dieser Band widmet sich Literatur und Künsten, die im Paris der Jahre 1917–1962 entstanden sind. Ausgangspunkt ist die Überzeugung Vilém Flussers, dass Migrationserfahrung und kulturelle Innovation engzuführen sind. Frankreich wurde in der Zwischenkriegszeit das zweitwichtigste Einwanderungsland der Welt nach den Vereinigten Staaten. Autorinnen und Autoren gelangten aus dem östlichen Europa, nach dem Erstarken der Faschisten aus Italien, nach 1933 aus Deutschland, nach dem Spanischen Bürgerkrieg sowie nach der Konsolidierung des Estado Novo in Portugal in die französische Metropole. Auch Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus Lateinamerika waren in Paris präsent, und der Congrès international des écrivains pour la défense de la culture im Juni 1935 machte die Stadt zum Zentrum des geistigen Widerstands gegen den Faschismus. Aber auch nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg migrierten Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftsteller aus aller Welt nach Frankreich. Die Beiträge berücksichtigen neben nahezu allen Sprachen der Romania auch die arabisch-, hebräisch-, deutsch-, russisch- und polnischsprachigen Literaturen.     Die Tschechoslowakei bildete sich 1918 als ein neuer demokratischer Staat in Europa. Künstlerinnen und Künstler nahezu aller Bereiche entwickelten in den Folgejahren visionäre Ideen. Die tschechische Avantgarde-Bewegung durchzog nicht nur die bildende Kunst, sondern auch die Architektur, Literatur, Poesie, Musik, das Theater und den Film. Die Publikation zur Ausstellung im Bröhan-Museum gibt einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Strömungen der tschechischen Moderne.     Dieser Band widmet sich Literatur und Künsten, die im Paris der Jahre 1917–1962 entstanden sind. Ausgangspunkt ist die Überzeugung Vilém Flussers, dass Migrationserfahrung und kulturelle Innovation engzuführen sind. Frankreich wurde in der Zwischenkriegszeit das zweitwichtigste Einwanderungsland der Welt nach den Vereinigten Staaten. Autorinnen und Autoren gelangten aus dem östlichen Europa, nach dem Erstarken der Faschisten aus Italien, nach 1933 aus Deutschland, nach dem Spanischen Bürgerkrieg sowie nach der Konsolidierung des Estado Novo in Portugal in die französische Metropole. Auch Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus Lateinamerika waren in Paris präsent, und der Congrès international des écrivains pour la défense de la culture im Juni 1935 machte die Stadt zum Zentrum des geistigen Widerstands gegen den Faschismus. Aber auch nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg migrierten Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftsteller aus aller Welt nach Frankreich. Die Beiträge berücksichtigen neben nahezu allen Sprachen der Romania auch die arabisch-, hebräisch-, deutsch-, russisch- und polnischsprachigen Literaturen.     Sequel to History offers a comprehensive definition of postmodernism as a reformation of time. Elizabeth Deeds Ermarth uses a diversified theoretical approachdrawing on post-structuralism, feminism, new historicism, and twentieth-century scienceto demonstrate the crisis of our dominant idea of history and its dissolution in the rhythmic time of postmodernism. She enlarges this definition in discussions of several crises of cultural identity: the crisis of the object, the crisis of the subject, and the crisis of the sign. Finally, she explores the relation between language and time in post-modernism, proposing an arresting theory of her own about the rhythmic nature of postmodern temporality. Because the postmodern construction of time appears so clearly in narrative writing, each part of this work is punctuated by a "rhythm section" on a postmodern narrative (Robbe-Grillet's Jealousy, Cortezar's Hopscotch, and Nabokov's Ada); these extended readings provide concrete illustrations of Ermarth's theoretical positions. As in her critically acclaimed Realism and Consensus in the English Novel, Ermarth ranges across disciplines from anthropology and the visual arts to philosophy and history.
