    This article looks at four different scholarly perspectives on ‘sacred’ - the ineffable sacred, the experienced sacred, the polarized sacred and the contextualized sacred - in order to draw out their implicit presuppositions about meaning. The first two stances presuppose that meaning depends on what bits of language are about (referentialism), and the other two stances presuppose that meaning depends on relations between bits of language (holism). The article concludes three things: these prominent views of ‘sacred’ rest on usually implicit or unrecognized assumptions about the nature of meaning; some of those assumptions explain why certain theories are contentious and problematic and others ground more promising and productive approaches.

    Beschreibungstheorie für die sinnlich-somatische Dimension von Religion. Im ersten Teil werden wissenschaftliche Körpergeschichtsschreibungen als Teil der Europäischen Religionsgeschichte rekonstruiert. Der zweite Teil entfaltet das zentrale Konzept eines Körperwissens. Der voraussetzungsreiche Begriff des Wissens wird vor dem Hintergrund philosophischer Wissensdiskurse diskutiert und um die somatische Dimension ergänzt. Es wird angenommen, dass der Körper Träger von non-propostitionalem Wissen ist. Körperwissen wird aus Diskussionen der Kognitionswissenschaft, Medizinethnologie und Sinnesphysiologie über Körpertonus, Tätowierung, prothetische Warnehmung und Körperschema ausgeführt. Die heuristische Kraft des Konzeptes Körperwissen wird an zwei religionsgeschichtlichen Fallbeispielen aufgezeigt (Musterwebkunst im Amazonasgebiet, spirituelles Heilen). Die integrative Perspektive der Religionsästhetik bezieht kulturelle Vorgaben wie soziale und stilistische Regeln, wie man zum Beispiel zu gehen hat, und somatische Kategorien wie Schrittlängen, Beweglichkeit und Muskelkraft aufeinander. Die Relevanz für die Religionsforschung liegt darin, dass z.B. verschiedene religiöse Bewegungsarten vom Schreiten bis zum Pilgern auf Knien in der Kombination von biografisch-emotionalen Besetzungen, innenperspektivischen Aussagen, kultursemiotischen Deutungen und der Sensomotorik dank ihrer Beschreibung auch mit religionsaisthetischen Kategorien zu einer dichten Beschreibung werden.

    Two main arguments of Timothy Fitzgerald’s The Ideology of Religious Studies (2000) (IRS) are that religion is an analytically useless (and even harmful) category and that study of religion departments could be rearranged as departments of cultural studies, theoretically informed ethnographic studies or humanities that study the institutionalized values of specific societies. This article introduces Fitzgerald’s argument, examines the reception of Fitzgerald’s work, and then proceeds to argue that, contrary to the opinion of many commentators, Fitzgerald’s first criticism opens up important research possibilities for scholars of religion. However, this article takes a slightly more critical view on the second argument, despite agreeing with the necessity of interdisciplinary research. Finally, this article suggests that historicizing the category of religion can enliven study of religion departments, rather than representing a reason for their problems.
